Knowing the law about equestrian use of minor highways (byways, bridleways, and footpaths) is important for all who ride or drive horses off-road, helping you to be sure of your rights and responsibilities, to build your confidence.
A sequel to the Introduction course, this event covers the Definitive Map of Public Rights of Way and how it is modified; researching evidence of use and making an application to a council for them to add a bridleway or byway.

Equipment
An internet connection and computer are necessary to view (some people manage with a tablet) but audio can be by phone if your computer does not have speakers and microphone.

Check your riding routes!

💪🏻 Check the status of your riding routes 💪🏻

In England and Wales, even if you’re using your favourite route to hack out regularly, this doesn’t mean that your route is recorded and protected❗

Your support with Project 2026 will mean that we can work together to ensure the routes you ride on are accurately recorded as safe off-road routes so that they may be enjoyed now, and for generations to come. The first step towards preserving these historic routes in England and Wales is to check the status of your favourite route. Please note, different rules apply in Scotland and Ireland. 🫴🏻

Your first port of call is an Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 scale map. Hard copies of OS maps can be bought from many websites, bookshops, or outdoor activity centres, or they can be viewed for free at most local libraries. 🗺️

If the route is marked correctly, you do not need to do anything else, it’s safe! If the route is not marked correctly please head over to 👉🏻www.bhs.org.uk/support-us/our-campaigns/project-2026/check-your-route/ to read the following steps you need to take.

The tree has to be right otherwise nothing else matters!

The role of the tree is to distribute the rider’s weight as evenly as possible over the horses back. The tree is designed to protect the central nervous system from any impact without itself being close to the spine. We also consider the movement of the shoulder to keep the tree from causing any restrictions to moment or/gait.

We always start from the tree as it is paramount to the fit of the saddle. The tree is ergonomically designed to suit the horse and then we build around that. As all of our saddles are wool flocked, they can be slightly adjusted throughout the panel and the tree can be adjusted via an authorised saddle fitter or back at the factory.

📍Holkham, Norfolk.

County Access & Bridleways Officer for Norfolk, Helen Chester visited the new permissive horse path in Holkham and tells us about her thoughts on the route. 🙂

“The new permissive horse path at Holkham is a great new addition ensuring safer access to the beach for equestrians, meaning we no longer have to walk through the busy car park area. 🐴

The horse path is accessed from just behind the parking machines in the horse box parking area. There is a safe coral area to open the gate and enter the path (mounting blocks are also being installed imminently). 🚚

The path is wide and has a soft wood chip surface underfoot. New hedges have been planted and once established will create a barrier between the track and the carpark and the marshes. It’s wide enough to easily pass other horses and the team at Holkham are working hard to ensure that only horses use this route to help keep everyone safe. 🌳

The path exits by the parking attendant hut, avoiding the previously narrow gates. I have been advised that mounting blocks will be installed and a tie rail just in case anyone needs to hop off for ice cream! The route is now the safest option for riders to enjoy access to the magic of Holkham beach.” ⛱️

Well yesterday wasn't quite the day I'd thought it would be!
Whilst at work I had an unexpected squeeze from a clients Connie! This resulted in broken ribs! Very painful and off work today. So for the next 4-6wks I'll have my helper with me at work. So no appointments will be affected.
I always tell myself to always expect the unexpected....must have had a brain blip yesterday!! 🙄🙄🙄
