(60)

Positive & Choice-based Gundog training, outside & all year round for all levels whether it be for fun & a hobby or to work in the field. Fun Pet Gundog Training using positive reinforcement, choice, and reward-based methods for any breed or crossbreed of gundog that are primarily pets or for those wanting to work their dog out in the field. The training helps to stimulate their brain, keeps them

physically & mentally fit, & helps to give you a good level of control over your dog. Labradors, spaniels, and other gundog breeds can and do make great pets, but it’s also important to remember that they have been selectively bred for generations to hunt and retrieve in partnership with us. Gundog style training helps to harness these instincts and drives of your pet gundog in order that you get the most from them as you’re fulfilling their hunting instincts.

💪✨ Monday Motivation ✨💪

“Just keep going — because you deserve to see what happens when all your hard work pays off.” 🐾

I’m back from a short break and I’m back to my own training schedule with Tully & Maola 🖤

So from my dogs to yours, I know it’s not always easy. Early dark mornings, finding time in the day for training, and sometimes those challenging setbacks. But trust me, the effort does pay off in the end. 🏆💥

So keep pushing, keep learning, and let’s see what we can achieve together! 👏🐶💚

The Importance of Early Learning: Why Your Puppy’s First Year Matters 🐾✨

Did you know that what your puppy learns in their first 16 weeks—and throughout their first year—sets the foundation for their entire life? 🐶 These early months are crucial for shaping your dog’s behaviour, temperament, and how they adapt to the world around them.

✅ Set the Right Habits Early On: If your puppy learns desirable behaviours like walking calmly on a loose lead or sitting to greet people, they’ll naturally carry these skills forward into adolescence and adulthood. These positive habits become second nature when reinforced from a young age.

❌ The Consequences of Bad Habits: On the flip side, if they learn that pulling on the lead gets them where they want to go, this habit can become deeply ingrained. Another common example is letting your puppy greet every dog they see. If they learn that meeting every dog is always allowed and fun, they may expect to do so every time, leading to frustration or pulling when they can’t.

⭐ A Balanced Approach: Teach your puppy that sometimes they can greet other dogs and sometimes they should pass by calmly. This helps them learn to be well-mannered and adaptable in different situations. While it’s not impossible to retrain older dogs, it often requires more time and effort to undo unwanted behaviours.

Pro Tip: Start training as early as possible! Focus on teaching your puppy the behaviours you want to see in the future. A few minutes of consistent training each day can make a world of difference in shaping a well-mannered, obedient dog.

Let’s set them up for success! 🏆 What behaviours are you focusing on teaching your puppy right now?

🐾 Friday Reinforcement 🐾

Just like our dogs, positive reinforcement works wonders for us humans too! Yesterday, I sent out the pre-course material for our November term, and received this lovely message from one of our newly booked puppy owner clients:

“Wow wow and wow! Just logged into my puppy course, and the information you’ve put together is mind-blowing. I’ve never seen anything like it in any of the classes I’ve attended with my dogs. Absolutely first class! I’d love to print the modules for my hubby to read before we come. You should be so proud of what you’ve built. I wish I had found you when Rosie was a puppy.”

This kind of feedback is a reminder that training isn’t just about the dogs—it’s about creating a valuable learning experience for everyone involved. Grateful for this reinforcement! 🙏🐶

🔄 When to Phase Out Placeboards? 🐕
Placeboards are fantastic for building focus, steadiness, and control, but at some point, you’ll want to transition your gundog to more natural settings. So, when’s the right time to phase out placeboards?

Generally, once your dog consistently follows cues and holds position without the board—especially in more challenging environments—it’s a sign they’re ready for the next level. You can start removing the placeboard in stages:

1️⃣ Gradual Transition: Begin by alternating between placeboard and ground drills. Use the board for some reps and go without it for others.

2️⃣ Increase Distractions: If your dog performs well in highly distracting environments, like around other dogs or in the field, it’s time to work without the placeboard.

3️⃣ Test & Revisit: Even after phasing out, it’s okay to revisit the placeboard occasionally to reinforce skills or fix any regression.

The structure of the board provides great feedback during early stages but becomes less necessary as they build independence.

💡 Pro Tip: Always listen to your dog. If they start losing focus, it’s fine to bring the placeboard back into play for a few sessions.

When did you phase out placeboards? Share your experiences below! 👇

I’m not saying cheese is the secret to dog training, but let’s just say it’s a game-changer.

🧀🐕 Primula’s cheese in a tube = no more puppy nibbles! When they lick instead of bite, it’s a win for your fingers AND their manners. Plus, licking the tube is like a natural calming exercise for those wild moments. 😌

But here’s a pro tip: Instead of stuffing your pockets with slimy treats, pocket-friendly items like cheese tubes or even a rope toy work wonders! Cheese keeps them focused, and the rope toy is perfect for redirecting all that playful energy. No mess, no fuss! 🙌

And that’s not all—tube cheese keeps those puppy eyes focused during distraction-filled training sessions.

Have you tried the cheesy tube?

🕒 How Long Should Each Placeboard Drill Last?

Wondering how long to work your gundog on placeboard drills? The key is quality over quantity.

Ideally, keep each drill short and focused—anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes for young dogs and 5 to 10 minutes for older dogs per drill is perfect for keeping your dog engaged without overworking them.

Remember, dogs learn best through repetition and consistency, not long, drawn-out sessions.

Break it down:
•5-10 min per drill with plenty of praise.
•Rotate through 2-3 different drills in a session.
•Always end on a positive note so your dog stays motivated!

In this photo, Hobbs & Tully are sharing their placeboard for short but powerful sit-stay & stop drill. It’s all about keeping the session fun and rewarding, which helps your dog stay sharp and focused without burning out. 💪🐶

🔄 Pro Tip: If your dog’s attention starts to drift, it’s time for a break. Keep sessions short, sweet, and effective for the best results!

📅 Monday Reminder: Patience is Key in Puppy Training! 🐾

I tend to find that a lot of new puppy owners want to rush their puppy’s education, throwing in lots of different exercises too soon. But it’s essential to focus on the basics and make sure your pup becomes fluent and reliable in different environments first! 🌳🏡

Puppies can’t generalise as easily as we do. So, mastering the fundamentals in various settings takes time, but it’s worth it. Build a strong foundation with consistency and patience, and avoid overwhelming them too soon. 🐶✨

Remember, they’re still in nursery-level learning—there’s no need to jump to university-level tasks just yet! 💪

🐾✨ Testimonial Thursday
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5-Star Review over on Google from Alistair and Stella.

“Lindsay is a fantastic instructor, knowledgeable and patient.

As a first-time dog owner, I was pretty clueless on what to do with my puppy Stella. I knew what I wanted Stella to achieve, obedience, good recall and to be a good all-round dog.

Stella and I have done 2 courses now and they have been a massive help in me understanding dogs and getting good results out of Stella, I now have a dog that understands what to do (mostly.....)

I will be back for some more courses later this year.”

🐶💪 Thank you for such a glowing review! We’re thrilled to see Stella thriving and can’t wait to see her progress on your next course. 🐾

Mastering Gundog Training with Placeboards 🐾

When it comes to building a rock-solid foundation for your gundog, placeboards are a must-have tool. They help define a clear boundary for your dog to learn precision, focus, and steadiness. From basic obedience to more advanced drills, placeboards condition your dog to hold a position, understand cues, and stay calm in high-distraction environments—whether you’re training for hunting, trials, or general behaviour at home.

🏆 Why Use Placeboards?
• They reinforce steadiness and patience.
• Help with spatial awareness and focus on specific areas.
• Boost your dog’s confidence as they know exactly where to go.
• Perfect for maintaining control during retrieves and sit stays.

In the picture, I’m using the ADW ( ) placeboard, which has been a game-changer in my training sessions.

Durable, stable, and designed specifically for canine training, it’s a key part of ensuring consistent results. Plus, as an ADW partner, you can just go the link direct and order yours today > https://angliandogworks.com?sca_ref=6930405.u2osIzDlIh

🐾 Meet Maola 🐾
(Pronounced Myla)

We’re excited to finally introduce Maola, a pup we decided to keep from Ellie’s litter!

Now 11 weeks & training is underway. Lots of appropriate socialisation, name response, sit, recall & relationship building.

She’s already showing signs of becoming a brilliant sassy gundog, and I can’t wait to see her progress.

Stay tuned for the adventures of Maola as she starts to star in some of our posts!

Our story

Positive Reinforcement & Choice-based Clicker Gundog training. Training is done outside & all year round for all levels whether it be for fun & a hobby or to work in the field.

The training we do will help strength the relationship you have with your dog so you can enjoy the time you spend together. The training is taught by qualified and accredited trainers so you know you and your dogs are in good hands.

Our group classes are small enabling you to get the best out of your training and also we can give you more individual attention. They are taught outside so your dogs are able to learn what to do in the ‘real world’ rather than in a village hall which also allows your dogs more space to learn and cope. We train using food and toy based reinforcers (rewards), choice-based methods so your dog knows by default what to do rather than being micro-managed all of the time.

We offer a range of group courses and fun workshops hosted by external trainers. For more details check out our website > www.pawsandplay.online
