There is a lot of controversy around the topic of neutering, whether you should or shouldn't get your dogs neutered? Or when is the right time?

The primary purpose of neutering is to prevent reproduction but there are medical and behavioural benefits too.

Neutering medical and behavioural benefits:
In spayed female dogs prevents mammary tumours, pyometra and problem behaviours associated with oestrus or pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy). Also the inability to reproduce eliminates the complications that could accompany pregnancy and delivery (especially in certain breeds).
Castrating males dogs reduces the chances of testicular and prostate related problems later in life.
Neutering can drastically change behaviours which are seen as socially unacceptable, including: aggression towards other dogs, roaming behaviours, marking, hu***ng.
It is important to remember that the hormones are still present in the body, but don't fluctuate as they would with intact reproductive organs. Male castration is not always the answer to all behaviour problems.

Getting the timing right for your pet depends on the lifestyle and situation of the particular dog as one decides whether and when to neuter a specific dog:
- All depends on breeds and the size. For example, larger/giant breeds like Great Danes aren't fully grown until 12-24 months old.
- The temperament of the pet: are they aggressive or nervous?
- Later-age (6-12months) spaying causes lower risk of early-onset urinary incontinence than early-age (

Bailey and Albert came in to be castrated. Due to them being brothers from the same household, both having a procedure and a little scared they were able to keep each other company during their hospitalisation. They were both such good boys, we look forward to seeing you both for your post op checks 😍💙

🦷Starting dental hygiene when your pet is young will make things easier in the long run! Booking your pet in for a routine dental before the teeth become decayed, can save them a lot of pain and irritation! Most of the dental surgery's we get booked in, are when a LOT of teeth extractions are needed. The main complication to this is the prolonged general anaesthetic for your pets.

💡Take home tips:
Regularly brush your pets teeth and those with a tartar build up already are recommended to have a scale and polish under general anaesthetic

It's Pet Dental Month!

Do you need tips and tricks for brushing your pets teeth (yes that includes cats too🐱):
- It's a gradual process, don't rush your pet into getting use to having their teeth brushed
- Start by getting them use to their mouth being touched either with your finger or a toothbrush
- Introduce the toothpaste (ONLY USE PET TOOTHPASTE, human toothpaste contains fluoride which is toxic to pets!)
- When they are use to this, try toothpaste on the toothbrush, allowing them to lick it off
- Give plenty of praise!
- Then finally you can start by brushing a few teeth in each session
