Yesterday was my third session with Buddy & his family. 7 weeks ago his owners genuinely didn’t think they would be able to keep him as his behaviours had become so out of control. 3 sessions, a huge commitment & a lot of consistent hard work......they now have a dog who is a pleasure to be around. Buddy still makes mistakes but he is still learning & with the help of his family he will only get better! So proud of this family!!
This is Buddy at the end of our session - mental fulfilment leads to physical relaxation. Thank you for letting me help 🐾🐾

I’ve been working with Rocky & his mum to help them have a better relationship. His mum hasn’t been able to walk him for 3 years for various reasons but today she walked him to a grassy area close to home where Rocky explored with his nose. I didn’t get a video or a picture because the moment caught me 😢. Guess what 2 breeds Rocky is.....🐾🐾

Eddie’s training session was held in a local pub this week - we met for coffee & added another dog into the mix. His owners want to really reinforce “place” & relaxation in different situations. Eddie & Bettie did a great job......hard work & consistency definitely pay! 🐾🐾

When I first met Teddy 6 weeks ago he pulled like a steam train & his lovely owner struggled to walk him on lead. He now walks beautifully on a loose lead & understands “pressure & release”. It has been an absolute pleasure walking him every day for the past 8 days. 2 days to go then his owners will be home. I really hope that they are happy with his hard work & improvement. Love you, Teddy 💙🐾🐾

Letting an off lead dog run up to an on lead dog is a no-no.

I know I'm preaching to the converted here, but I think it's important to increase awareness around the impact that such an experience can have on a dog.

When an off lead dog runs up to an on lead dog:

⚠️ It's rude. Imagine if I started to run towards random people in the street, shouting that I am friendly and just want to play, jumping all over them, putting my hands on their face, pulling their hair. I hope we can all agree that this is not good and highly inappropriate. It's the same for our dogs.

⚠️ We don't know why the other dog is on lead - and honestly, we don't need to know! All of us should (and I rarely use this word, but this is one of the few cases when I do) just give space to the on lead dog and keep our off lead dog away. The dog might be injured, they might be recovering from surgery, they might be scared of other dogs, they might be in training. Maybe their guardian wants to enjoy a walk in peace without an unknown dog jumping all over their dog. And to be fair, even if the other dog was on lead just because they have a poor recall (sensible choice!), having an off lead dog running up to them is likely to cause them to feel frustrated or over-excited, which is not ideal.

⚠️ Both the dog and their guardian and their right to enjoy our public spaces are affected. Yes, they are indeed entitled to have a walk without a dog charging over.

⚠️ There will be consequences for that dog and the way they react to other dogs. Indeed, they might feel more and more on edge around other dogs, and they might start to show more reactive behaviours, including barking, pulling, lunging.

⚠️ If the above happens, their guardian will need to invest in further training to help their dog recover, which takes time and can be an exhausting journey. So they will basically have to pay (financially, emotionally, and psychologically) for something that happened that it's not even their fault.

⚠️ Their world becomes smaller. And this is very sad. With time they will stop going on walks in public spaces. This means they will have to drive out to fields, hire fields, or just stick to pavement walking (although this is not a guarantee there won't be off lead dogs charging at them, as I witness off lead dogs being walked on A roads on a daily basis - I know, I wished I was joking too). When they go out, they will always be on high alert, scanning their environment to make sure they can keep their dog safe. And all this for something they didn't cause in the first place. It's painful and it's unfair.

⚠️ This harms the off lead dog too, as the more they practise running away from their guardian and completely ignoring them, the better they will get at it. It's also a risk to their own safety, as they might chase after something, cross a road, get too close to livestock, or get told off/attacked by another dog.

Given all the above, I hope you can see why I strongly advocate not letting dogs off the lead when they have a poor or non-existent recall, especially if they tend to charge at other dogs.

It's our responsibility to keep our dogs and everyone else around them happy and safe.

So if a dog doesn't have a good recall, some of the things we can do include keeping them on lead, using a long line, hiring a field, hiring a trainer, practising recall safely and appropriately.

When our actions are negatively affecting other people's and other dogs' lives, we honestly need to consider how to prevent that from happening in the first place.

There are no excuses.

This is something everyone should see.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.
