Useful information for our bridleways

With the recent adverse weather, a number of routes have become blocked by fallen trees 🌲 So what should you do if you come across a problem on a route in England and Wales?

1️⃣ 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The more accurate, the better – try using the What3Words app, Ordnance Survey grid reference, or a postcode location.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼
If you can, a photo is helpful to identify the scale of a problem. You can use an everyday object as a scale if you don’t have a tape measure. For example, if a fallen tree, have a person stood next to it.

3️⃣ 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆/𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮
Check the issue is on a route recorded as a public bridleway, restricted byway or a byway open to all traffic. Make a note of the route reference number. Try searching “Online map of rights of way for [county / authority area]

4️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 / 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆
Make sure to include as much detail about the issue as possible. Add the specific location, your photos, the route reference number and as much detail as possible.

5️⃣ If you can see the problem has been reported – 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗜𝗧 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡

6️⃣ 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱
Allow at least a month, however if the is imminent risk of an injury occurring, or an injury has occurred as a result make sure to add this to your report. Some issues will have higher priority if there are safety implications, or they are on a busy route.

7️⃣ 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 if you do not receive a satisfactory response with a reasonable time
Contact the county/authority again via the details on your acknowledgement email/message from them.

8️⃣ 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 if you are dissatisfied with the response from the county/authority

If the issue remains unresolved, email us on [email protected].

Access to the countryside in 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 and 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 is very different, so please direct questions on access in those countries to:
Scotland - Helene Mauchlen, BHS National Manager for Scotland - [email protected]
Northern Ireland - Susan Spratt, BHS National Manager for Ireland - [email protected].

Isca Livery Stables Ltd.

Isca Livery has been established for over 20 years and is run by Mari-Sian Mayho, her family and staff. Set in 45 acres of rolling Monmouthshire countryside, it has grown over the years from one block of DIY stables to 2 DIY/ assisted blocks and one block of Monarch stables for part/ full liveries and now also has a large outdoor arena (approx 60m x 40m); indoor school (approx 18m x 36m); Monarch 5 horse horsewalker; Monarch stocks and solarium; alarmed secure tack/ feed rooms with individual lockable storage; 24hr CCTV surveillance throughout the yard; owners living on site; isolation stable; rug drying area and coffee room. Isca Livery is only a few miles from Newport, Caerleon, Cwmbran and Pontypool yet is in the countryside with lovely riding nearby. It is a child friendly yard (children under 12 must be supervised and over that age must be deemed competent by Mari-Sian to be left unsupervised) but also has plenty of adult customers of all ages and abilities.

Isca Livery has been BHS approved for many years and since 2015 it has achieved their top rating of Highly Commended. Isca Livery Stables is also one of only 4 yards in South Wales to offer the free Equine Outreach Horse Care courses, in conjunction with Coleg Gwent, leading to NPTC City & Guilds qualifications. These 4 yards have been chosen because of the high standard of tuition offered.

Mari-Sian has ridden since she was 3 years old and is a BHS Accredited Professional Coach, currently with the BHSAI qualification. This means that she is up to date with her First Aid at Work Certificate, DBS checks, BEF child safeguarding and CPD training including having attended training days with the likes of William Fox- Pitt, Tim Stockdale, Sophie Wells and Christopher Bartle. She has taught various Riding Clubs, Pony Clubs and many individuals and has over 25 years teaching experience. She has successfully competed BSJA, represented Torfaen Riding Club in Area Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing and qualified for some of the BRC National Championships. She has also competed in County Level showing classes and been the WPCS Performance Champion and Showjumping Champion as well as producing 2 of her own horses for police use.

For many years Mari-Sian and her staff have broken in and schooled horses in a very quiet, non- pressurising way, waiting for the horse to let them know when they are ready to progress to the next stage rather than working to a set time scale. This has meant there have been many satisfied customers and happy horses!
