Sorry it's a long one, I'm having a rant lol π
There's a lot more to training horses than just getting on them and getting them to do a job, you have to be able to feel and see if there are any issues.
Lots of people are out there to just make quick money, no matter what the cost to the horses health/well-being mentally and physically.
Or to the safety of the owners/buyers.
I have always ended up getting the horses that have usually been messed about with and then have problems, and something has happened and I get called, either a fall, or horse scared or not letting them do something, then it's a guessing game of chance to see what they are capable of both physically and mentally. Whether the issue has just been caused or was there previously.
And most people do not know the history of the horse they have as they only know what they have been told, or rather lied to, which is very upsetting.
And yes I usually do some digging work to find out history as it makes my job a lot easier, if I know what's happened, doesn't put me off, just gives me a heads up with what is going on.
Recently I've dealt with 2 horses, both with similar issues, 1 sold by a so called reputable dealer as safe, sane, riding school type horse.
To owners who totally trusted them.
But they did not disclose any previous issues.
This horse ended up with these previous issues affecting it not long down the line, which would have been there, but probably masked by various means known to most horse traders, so the buyer wouldn't tell, taking advantage of inexperienced people.
I suggested we had a proper chiropractor out one I've had for about 20 years, not just a massage person that people seem to use these days π, which is great for the horses muscles but don't actually correct any issues, anyway that's another of my moans lol.π
We had my chiropractor out and the poor horses stifle kept clicking out under pressure, u could hear it, so the horse was fine, for walking and a slow trot, happy in the field pottering about, but ask for more and as a horse has to use it's hind quarters to canter underneath itself , if it clicked the pain must have been awful and it freaked out and spun and got the rider off, understandably.
This could have been masked with painkillers and with the horse being honest and kind, she did as she was told under pressure by them forcing her around with a whip.
Which is why she's petrified of whips too now.
Now not only is this extremely dangerous, but it's cruel to the horse, and the new owner a young girl who the pony was for, came off and her mum too, they could have got badly hurt or worse, And this was not their fault at all, the horse was telling them something.
Then I get called asking to try the horse due to it not wanting to be ridden or something has happened, to find the horse isn't quite right, couldn't put my finger on it exactly , but knew something was wrong, until I put the horse in the school loose, and it couldn't canter on the right rein voluntary , always led on the left lead even on right rein, this is not a naughty horse, or unschooled , but in pain and scared, and the owners love them enough to actually get help.
And they were blaming themselves, when it was actually not their fault at all. Not one bit. But now they're left to deal with the issues, not knowing if the horse will ever be rideable again, and the other one I dealt with may come right with exercises and slow hard work. But I will take my time till it's right.
But this should never have been the case, I have many horror stories I've dealt with over the years, and issues not disclosed which could have killed me or new owners you wouldn't believe it, and a lot of issues have been psychological and dangerous, but in both cases recently the horse is in pain, these issues should not have been masked, they should have been dealt with first by the dealer/trainer and if they couldn't be resolved then they should not have been passed on, so either the dealers and so called horse trainers out there now are totally stupid, or so inexperienced that they can't tell when a horse is not right or they just like putting other people at risk.
And if I can tell a horse isn't right after one visit, then these ones who force horses round thinking they're being difficult, so they push them and use whips or spurs to make them do what they want to look good for videos or to sell, or Bute them up, or give them calmer, they should actually think, if a horse isn't moving happily in all 3 gaits without being forced, then maybe they should look again at the reason why.
Years ago it took me 2 years of work on a horse who when I met it, couldn't even stretch down to eat grass it had throughout its training been strapped up so much when trained even in a stable, it had no hind quarters and the neck of a huge stallion, it was whipped round with 2 whips to make it canter, when it was so sore he was lame and in agony. It had never even been in a field except as a foal. π.
The breeders blamed the owner saying she couldn't ride which is why it wouldn't canter for her, hence she asked me to go and see him for 2nd opinion on her riding, it wasn't her, it was the horse, he physically was in pain. And the owner had paid over Β£10 thousand 18 years ago.
But these were reputable breeders, who even do demonstrations still now, I have helped many of their previous horses to have a better life. But people don't see what I see, if you are having to force a horse to do something it isnt right!
There's a difference between force and training and control. And these dealers/breeders/trainer's really need to learn the difference as they screw up so many horses, and it's dangerous and can get people killed!
I agree some horses can be difficult, but I'm talking about if a horse won't even go freely loose schooling on both reins happily on both leads, if it's sore when u touch it's back or sides, it's not just ticklish , yes some are but mostly if you touch their backs they shouldn't move away, if it's being difficult for the farrier , maybe it's sore and can't stand, not all the time but definitely a lot of times, I have 2 that are like that because they're old and arthritic, that's just simple common sense for horse trainers/dealers, if they're not happy doing simple things then there is an issue.
It makes me angry that people don't put the horse first, just the money, when I'm asked to sell a horse, I get everything checked, and I will will disclose everything about them, including all their likes and dislikes, because I spend the time knowing what they're like, and understanding them, and I will also refuse to sell if the person isn't right.
That's why I'm poor, lol π€£ I do it because I actually care about the animal and what happens to them, I'm not there for quick turn around jobs, make them look good and sell quickly for lots of money, I want them to have a future and a nice life ahead.
Just remember..
There's always a reason why a horse won't do something. And it's up to us not to force but to find out why.
