I suppose our saga begins back in the 1970’s, where our founder (my mum) Gaynor with her love for horses, decided to open her own tack shop and become a saddle fitter; she also taught herself to repair saddles and tack, and taught herself how to re-flock and adjust panels. All of this happened before I was born.
I grew up around horses and in the tack shop, I ended up working in the shop after I finished school at 16. When the shop was quiet I would repair tack. By 18 I decided to learn how to make bridles, and I kept challenging myself with my work. I always wanted it neater, better, fancier, I would stitch finer, cut finer, plait finer and go on to create bespoke bridle work out of the highest quality leather and fittings. At 19 years old I was back out on saddle fittings with my mum studying and learning. At 22 I was fitting saddles on my own and have been doing for the last 10 years.
I’ve learned a lot doing this job, and think I will continue to learn as it is a world that is ever changing and in need of new ideas. Horses are changing, people are changing and so is the technology used in saddlery. We’ve always templated and created the ideas we believe are best for the horses we go out to fit, and shared that knowledge with saddlers we trusted to do the correct job and create the best possible fitting saddle. We’ve used various saddlers over the years, each with their own good points and bad.
We have now found our own saddler, who has been making saddles for around 50 years for various saddle company’s. I find he puts the same effort into his work as I put into mine, he uses the very best materials for his work and is extra vigilant that his saddles are made correctly from start to finish. Taking that extra time at each stage to make sure every inch of his work is correct. Furthermore he is still learning new techniques and developing new ideas, rather than creating the same old saddle design from 20 years ago.
