Our Dog Wardens receive many complaints regarding dogs acting aggressively, often with these complaints it is initiated by dogs that are not under proper control of their owners.

If you see a dog on a lead be respectful and make sure you place your dog on a lead until you are close enough to speak with the owner. Dogs, like humans, do not always get along together and its important to not place dogs in a position where they feel threatened.

However friendly your dog is if it approaches an on lead dog and an altercation starts you could be found at fault and liable for any costs incurred. You could also end up in court or with formal sanctions placed against your dogs.

From 10 June 2024 cats over 20 weeks old must be microchipped and registered on a compliant database. 🐾

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

By microchipping their cats, owners can increase the likelihood that they will be reunited with their beloved pet if they go missing.

More information on how to get your cat microchipped can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-microchipped

Following up my last post, I'd like to offer 2 extra places this month to help someone's dog walking business. Whether you are a newbie starting up, looking at the best route for you and your business and ensuring an ethical approach and ensuring the welfare of our canine furry friends or a business that has been running a couple of years but need a bit of help with growth whilst still keeping welfare priority over profit .. you CAN be one of the best in your area!

I will be sending out some information in what to look for and what to steer clear of in a dog walker for those lovely caregivers who need some advice before they take someone on.

Just drop me a message if you are interested in either the professional or the caregiver advice

"Just because they fill a vehicle with as many dogs as possible for maximum profit, doesn't make them a professional dog walker

Just because they have some experience with dogs, doesn't mean they know what they're doing. Scary thought that experience with dogs is what is asked for when advertising for new 'team members'. I've had legs all my life, doesn't make me an Olympic runner!

Don't worry about the mandatory daily selfie 🙄, you're not that needy for attention"

These are just some of the things picked up in last month's sessions with my Ethical Dog Walker mentees.

The standard certainly needs lifting for dog walkers out there. Anyone can call themselves a dog walker and as clearly vocalised in our sessions, the professionals are appalled at the lack of decent education and training in the industry. The trouble is, dog owners are completely unaware of what their walker is actually doing with their beloved furry family members.

Even today I've seen ads for a certain multi-industry academy offering courses from knitting, photography, forensics, engineering and everything in between. You can take a 'diploma' course for £21 or have access to every single one of their courses for £75. What kind of education is it really teaching? A few years back, I got 1 of my kids to do one of these courses. Sat there, didn't really pay much attention because he was bored and then done the few multiple choice questions at the end. Answers were obvious to guess. At aged 7, he had passed that course with 100%. That was a course that doesn't come with any risk of causing major harm. This same educator also offers pet physiotherapy courses. Again, you watch a video and answer some multiple choice questions and congratulations, here's a diploma to download. I'm pretty sure you actually need actual hands on training and assessments and can only practice after gaining an actual degree to be a pet physiotherapist! These type of providers also like to bundle a load of nonsense courses from the same industry together for some made up discounted price, so you can be a cattery manager, physiotherapist, behaviourist, trainer all in 1 for a bargain price. It's alarming!

Pet owners, please check out your pet professionals credentials. Please don't pick anyone with these ridiculous 'qualifications', they're really not worth the picture they're downloaded from.

Pet professionals and new start ups, as much as I encourage ongoing training, please pick the right education provider and get proper training. Don't be just another hobby walker with bad practices and where profit is more important than welfare.

I've heard some really scary walkers out there and I just hope that the standard is raised very soon for the sake of animal welfare!

Looking forward to this month's sessions. We've got ethics and collaboration to dive into!

The Case for Choosing a Force-Free Dog Walker

In recent years, the conversation around dog training and care has evolved significantly. One of the key points of contention is the methods employed by dog walkers. While some rely on tools and techniques that involve force, others advocate for force-free approaches, here's why opting for a force-free dog walker is not just a choice, but a commitment to your furry friend's well-being.

Understanding Force-Free Dog Walking

Force-free dog walking is rooted in positive reinforcement and humane training methods. Instead of using tools like choke chains, slip/figure of eight leads, prong collars, or shock collars, force-free dog walkers rely on rewards, praise, and encouragement to guide canine behaviour. This approach prioritises emotional and physical safety of dogs, fostering a trusting and respectful relationship between walker and pet.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

Force-free dog walking focuses on reinforcing desired behaviours rather than punishing unwanted ones. By using rewards such as treats, toys, and verbal praise, dogs learn to associate good behaviour with positive outcomes. This not only creates a more enjoyable walking experience but also encourages dogs to repeat behaviours that are safe and appropriate.

Upholding Canine Welfare

Tools like choke chains, slip/figure of eight leads and shock/prong/spray collars can cause physical harm and psychological distress to dogs. Force-free dog walking prioritises the well-being of dogs by avoiding the use of such aversive tools. By employing gentle methods that respect the dog's physical and emotional boundaries, force-free walkers ensure that each walk is a positive and enriching experience for the dog. I would like to add that slip leads have their place but never in a normal walk.

Fostering Trust and Bonding

Building a strong bond between the dog and the walker is essential for a successful walking experience. Force-free dog walking emphasises trust, communication, and mutual respect. By focusing on positive reinforcement and building a relationship based on trust and cooperation, force-free walkers foster a deep bond with the dogs in their care, leading to a more enjoyable and fulfilling walking experience for both parties.

Supporting Ethical Standards

Opting for a force-free dog walker aligns with ethical standards of animal welfare and humane treatment. By choosing a walker who prioritises positive reinforcement and force-free methods, dog owners contribute to promoting a culture of compassion and respect for all animals. This not only benefits individual dogs but also sets a precedent for responsible pet care within the community.

Conclusion

In the realm of dog walking, the choice between force-free methods and those that rely on tools is significant. By opting for a force-free dog walker, dog owners prioritise their pet's well-being, promote positive behaviour, uphold ethical standards, and foster a strong bond based on trust and respect. Ultimately, choosing a force-free dog walker isn't just about walking—it's about investing in the happiness, safety, and welfare of man's best friend.

Happy day
20/03/2024

Happy day

We're not nasty, we're not bad, we are not even mean.
We are just a bit scared or nervous sometimes.
All you need to do is give us some space, and the world feels much less frightening sometimes.
When my human asks you to call your dog back, its not beccause they think your dogs bad or naughty either, We just like different things.
And they are just trying to help me feel safe.
Next time you see a dog wearing yellow, will you do something for me?
Just give them a little more space. It will mean the world to us 💛

Happy day

Happy day

If you spot a dog on the lead or wearing yellow, there is one small thing that you can do that will truly transform their day.
Give them some space - A little distance goes a long way.
Dog wearing yellow need space and it can be for a whole host of different reasons.
They might be injured or in pain, they might be scared of dogs or people, they might find children frightening.
I know you might be curious to learn more, but please don't approach.
When things that scare our come too close it makes them feel like a threat.
That's why you might see us bark, lunge or show our teeth.
We're just trying to make the scary thing go away.
When we can see these scary things at a distance our humans help us learn that they're not so scary after all.
But it takes time. And patience.
And my humans are trying really hard to show me how safe the world is.
Will you help and keep your distance?
Thank you 💛

Happy day

Happy day

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.
Today is for you, our dogs in yellow.
This day is for our wonderful friends.
A day where you can be celebrated from a distance, just the way you like it.
A day where we tell the world about how special you are and help others to understand your wonder.
A day where the stars shine bright yet silent, for we know how much you may hate sudden noises.
A day where we appreciate beauty in the still, for movement can make you wary.
A day where we just be and enjoy your presence.
A day where nobody will come anywhere near you, unless you want them to.
Happy day
We love you 💛
