Would you know how to deal with a dog attack? 🐶⚠️

Dogs don’t go around looking to attack others, and a well-socialised dog will not normally be actively aggressive towards other dogs 🙅‍♀️ But, any dog can become aggressive if they are afraid and feel there is no other way out of the situation.

This can be due to a current perceived threat or even past experience making them uncomfortable 😟

It can be really distressing if a dog becomes aggressive. Obviously your main concern is the welfare of your furry friend, but there are a few important things you need to do if your dog or a person is a victim of a dog bite.

HOW TO PROTECT PAWS ON HOT PAVEMENTS
1. Follow the five-second rule, and check the surface for heat with the back of your hand, before you leave the house.
2. Keep to grass.
3. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
4. Invest in a pair of booties to help avoid burning paws.

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language to tell if they're starting to feel uncomfortable ⚠️🐶

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite 😟

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder.

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the specific order.

Exercising your dog's brain is an important part of their daily routine. 🧠💪 One of the simplest brain games you can start with is scatter feeding. To do this, scatter your dog’s food on the floor, around the house or in the garden. This encourages your dog to search for their food and helps encourage their natural foraging behaviours. 🐶

We recommend using a portion of your dog’s daily food for games in order to avoid overfeeding.

Have you experienced some snowfall? Don't forget to wipe your dog’s paws and belly after walks to remove any ice or salt, and regularly check for cracks in paw pads or for redness between the toes. Grit/rock salt can be toxic to dogs and cats if ingested.

☀️ HOT WEATHER ALERT - DANGERS OF WATER☀️
A hot weather alert has been issued in the UK for the next few days and Europe is already in the grip of a heatwave. As well as taking care of ourselves and others, we also need to protect our pets. As well as heat stroke, there is a risk of water intoxication from drinking a large volume of water in a short period of time and salt poisoning from drinking too much seawater. The VPIS has received a number of enquiries recently about dogs with these conditions.
Salt poisoning can result in vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, drinking excessively, and in severe cases convulsions. If you are at the beach, always provide access to fresh water for your dog.
If playing with water in the garden (e.g. in a paddling pool or with a hose) be careful not to allow your dog to drink too much water over a short period of time because this can lead to water intoxication. Signs of water intoxication included vomiting, lethargy, weakness, coma and convulsions.
If your pet is unwell with suspected heatstroke, or is showing signs of possible water intoxication or salt poisoning, consult your vet immediately
