Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous.

If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.

Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell. Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

We are always striving at Phoenix to give your pets the most comprehensive, up to date and best care.

Our vet Phoebe recently ran a project to support our diabetic patients. This involved using a score sheet to monitor changes between visits so the Vet and Nurse team could gain information from the owners easily and allow us to assess the patients home life and whether anything had changed. We only ever get a snapshot of how your pets are doing in practice so this was an incredibly helpful tool.

Phoebe managed to organise 86% of our diabetic patients to have this assessment every 6 months which is a fantastic achievement and CVS rewarded her and team with a certificate.

Are you looking to travel abroad with your pet this summer? If you are, you will be required to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for them.

An AHC needs to be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).

Check with your veterinary practice to see if they have a qualified OV because not every practice will have one.

Deafness is rising in the UK; by 2035, it is estimated that one in five British people (over 15 million) will experience hearing loss. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds like the smoke alarm, alarm clock and even a baby’s cry. Their burgundy coats also act as a visual reminder to the public when they are out and about that their partner is deaf.

Donations raised through Pennies when you pay by card help support Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Just a small donation can make a big difference!

Look at our new wonderful garden!

Thank you to our wonderful RVN Charlotte and Practice Manager Hannah for completely transforming our Phoenix garden. Before it was a sad, forgotten unused space.

Thanks to their hard work it is now a beautiful, tranquil space. All the flowers are dog-safe and there is a bench at the end of the garden for reflection and contemplation.

It is also a step towards supporting our environment and having a garden to produce C02 and a safe place for bugs to thrive.

We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

The International Society for Feline Medicine (ISFM) is the veterinary division of International Cat Care (www.icatcare.org), a charity dedicated to improving the health and welfare of cats worldwide.

We understand that there are unique difficulties in bringing a cat to a veterinary clinic:

• Cats often do not travel well and feel unsafe away from their home
• They are highly sensitive to new sights, sounds and smells
• Most cats prefer quiet and solitude and are highly susceptible to stress
• Most cats are highly stressed by nearby dogs in a vet clinic
• Cats need to be handled gently and with respect in the clinic.
