We have read a number of concerning papers recently, mainly emanating from veterinarians over the pond. They claim that beans can’t possibly form in the horses p***s because the horse will just ‘pee them out’ the reason for this view is because they think that beans form in the urethra. In all the years we have bean doing this job (don’t mind the pun 😉) it’s terribly strange that we have never once found a bean forming inside a horse’s urethra, but instead inside the urethral fossa, a separate compartment next to the urethra. This compartment is essentially a dead-end therefore no urine can pass through it, so it’s impossible for them to ‘pee them out’. It’s even more concerning to hear vets over here quote these papers when they are wildly inaccurate. As we say often, we work along side many wonderful vets and are reccomended to over 50% of our clients via their vet, but the information that is occasionally passed on to our clients is concerning. There is a reason covering stallions don’t get beans, they cover! If we are to domesticate these animals and stop them from doing what they would naturally do in the wild, of course problems such as beans will arise.

Yesterday I attended my CPD and there is NEW advice I need to share with you!

👉SO SAVE (& SHARE) THIS POST!

I often tell you how important it is to make sure you have the right support on your team and that a little bit of old knowledge can be dangerous too!

It's so important to me that I stay up to date, so I will be going through everything with a fine tooth comb and putting it into words that everyday horse owners can understand (and not the science jargon!)

The MOST IMPORTANT piece of new advice I want to share with you now though is that it is now advised that every horse receives treatment once a year for large strongyles, regardless of faecal egg count results!

Making it even more important to give your WINTER WORMERS regardless of faecal egg count results throughout the year. 👉 This will cover your treating Large Strongyles, bots as well as inhibited and encysted small redworm.

If you are on our program and you get reminders you will know which wormer to give.

If you aren't maybe it's time to get on the program.

We hope that makes sense.

It’s mind-boggling to me that many horse owners still choose to treat for worms without testing
(and some choose neither!)

I often wonder why this is?

If only they knew what damage they are doing. Can you imagine what’s going to happen when there are no more treatments for worms available?

Last year we shared this study that was presented at a recent Equine Colic Symposium suggesting the shocking possibility of RESISTANCE to praziquantel, a drug used to treat TAPEWORM.

The study followed colic cases in four yearlings over several years (one in 2014, and three in 2019/2020) at
a stud farm.

Tapeworm infections were found to be a significant concern in horse management when colic cases in four
yearlings were investigated.

The individual colic cases occurred over several years (one in 2014, and three in 2019/2020) at a well-managed Thoroughbred stud farm.

Two of the yearlings required euthanasia while two made a full recovery.

The most concerning finding was that two of the live tapeworm infections were discovered just days after
the yearlings had received the praziquantel dose, therefore raising suspicions of praziquantel resistance.

The message is clear:

🐴 Tapeworm should be considered a significant pathogen in young horses.

WE MUST TEST AND NOT JUST TREAT!

Would you like to get your horse tested for tapeworm?

You can buy on our website and our subscription includes tapeworm testing.
