Discomfort/pain and behaviour are very closely linked. Look how lovely her gait is now! 💜

How long does it take to change a dog's emotional response? If you had a lot of big feelings about something that you felt could put you in danger, how long do you think it would take you? There is SO much to behaviour mod (pain checks, self reinforcement history, cortisol levels, ensuring needs are fulfilled etc), as well as building new skills and changing how a dog feels about something. There is no such thing as a quick fix!

This is Stanley's journey! When I first started working with Stanley, he was nervous, hyper vigilant on walks, barking and lunging at dogs in the neighbourhood and could not see the neighbouring Pointer without really struggling with his feelings.Today, Stanley was able to CHOOSE to interact and walk with the neighbouring Pointer. This is 4 months of very hard work and consistency from Stanley and his people. We have worked on changing his emotional response to dogs, built skills to help him when interacting with dogs, ensured there was no pain or medical involved and lots of confidence building. This is ALL via positive reinforcement and Stanley has done so well. To say I am proud would be a major understatement 💜

Hank 🐶I absolutely loved working with Hank and his person. The dedication and hard work they put in together, they are an absolute A team! Frustration is something I see a lot in adolescent dogs. This video has some tips on how to help your dog navigate their environment and how to manage your expectations of working on changing your dog's emotional response.

Dog's feeling safe, must be our priority. When they feel unsafe, they communicate. Please think about how we respond to our dogs, how we work with our dogs and how we train our dogs. Making a dog feel unsafe, does not make them safer.

Counterconditioning and differential reinforcement are so important for behaviour modification. But please, do not miss out on allowing your dog to process and having fun!

Processing their environment, even without triggers. Let your dog watch, observe and take everything in.

Have fun with them! I see so often that dogs are hyper vigilant as soon as they leave the front door, because walks have become worrying for them. Next time you go out with your dog, watch what they do. Do they love movement, tracking, digging, play? Use those in your training! When we say play is magic, it really is! Douglas went from struggling to hear his own name, frantic and zigzagging to having the best time on his walk and really wanting to engage and have fun with his people!

Blunt truth time 👊🏼

It’s not just as simple as whether they are in obvious pain or not with regards to whether you should be trying to optimise your dogs physical function ‼️

Just because a vet may have assessed and said they aren’t in obvious pain, doesn’t mean there isn’t an issue that needs addressing. If a dogs has a consistently “wonky sit”, or “skip” when on a walk, or a horse is regularly tripping or short striding, then that shouldn’t just be ignored even if there is no obvious pain present.

Pain can come in many forms, not everyone is in pain just standing around and therefore it’s not always obvious, sometimes discomfort can some from a specific exercise, or from working a muscle incorrectly during movement…and pain doesn’t always show obviously! They may be fine having their limbs manipulated, but a dog may really struggle to settle and always seem on the go as they stiffen when resting, or a horse may be branded “lazy to the leg” as they brace against the discomfort of being asked to power forwards. They may also be fine NOW, but that repetitive incorrect movement or posture will cause issues later down the line...

With humans we still try to optimise sitting posture for long periods at a desk, or ensure correct lifting techniques, or when learning a sport try to encourage “correct” technique, because that all enhances physical function! 💪🏼

You see it’s also about longevity of physical function. If I told you just a few simple home management changes or a completing few physio exercises a day could prevent your horse from needing those joint injections at 10 years old or needing a bute a day to stay sound, or your dog from needing cruciate ligament surgery or getting arthritis before they reach 8…then doesn’t that sound good?! 🤔

This is where Physiotherapy assessment and treatment comes in. Your WHOLE animal is considered, not just one “problem limb”, and muscular function, joint function, and behavioural aspects are all considered. And I work with vets to help find the root cause of an issue!

It’s not just for old or sporting animals, but ALL animals. As they only have a short time with us…don’t you want it to be a great and long one?!

Mini Hovis update!

He's doing really well! He is becoming far calmer on his walks around triggers and is finding them less stressful. We have been lucky enough to have some lovely local walks. Hovis is still showing pain symptoms and so we will be investigating further!

I always say this and will continue to do so, but behaviour modification takes time. It will not change overnight and a lot goes into it. We learn to enjoy the process with them and guide them when needed! All the hard work, patience and consistency is very much worth it.

Dogs can struggle with big feelings and regulating their emotions whether it be frustration, over-arousal, fear or just down to impulse control.

This little exercise can be really helpful! Give it a go and let me know how you find it!

Riley loves to chase wildlife - most dogs do! But, we are working on Predation Substitute Training by Simone Mueller and on the following at home: appropriate chase outlets, impulse control around movement, breed specific outlets, emergency stops and more!

This has been done via positive, ethical methods and can be done no matter the size of the dog! This is not as simple as engage/disengage and his family have been doing amazing work and working really hard behind the scenes with him. Consistency is key! This is very early on in Riley's training and he's already doing so well 🩷

Lady is such an amazing dog and is a great example of what positive reinforcement and reward based methods can achieve.

When I met Lady, she had a significant bite history and her family had been told that euthanasia was the right choice. With very careful behaviour modification and time, Lady has gone 8 months without any bites, will communicate her worries at low levels and her confidence has sky rocketed. She loves exploring her area during walks and absolutely loves her agility classes!

Her family have gone above and beyond for her and are some phenomenal people 🩷👏🏻

Dogs not taking food on a walk is something I come across daily. Its not actually usually to do with the value of reward (sometimes it can be). But a lot more about your dog's mood state! Prioritise mood state first and it goes a very long way for training and behaviour modification!

A lovely review from Ralph's guardians!

Ralph had been unfortunately labelled as a 'nasty' and 'aggressive' dog. When I met him, he was the absolute opposite. This sweet, sociable and enthusiastic little guy had become worried of formal handling because he had little choice in those situations. We helped Ralph via co-operative handling methods which provided Ralph with choice and the option to tell us when it was all getting a bit much! This meant that Ralph didn't feel the need to escalate his behaviour! If you want to see Ralph's training in action, a video of him is in my other post!

Well done Ralph and his guardians, he is a star ⭐️

Learned Helplessness, Default Passivity & Why I Don't Use Aversives (plus some neuroscience).

Its a long video, so strap in! Sometimes understanding what happens in our dog's brain helps us make sense of certain behaviours, responses and why tools may make it look as though the dog is 'fine'. Due to default passivity, measuring 'fine' is very difficult! Let me know if you have any questions!
