Cooperative handling - I love it! It's very easy for us to rush handling to get it over and done with. This can make things more stressful for the dog! By building a pattern around handling and taking everything at the dog's pace, handling can become far less stressful for you and your dog! Chin rests are a great place to start and I love to use a cushion (same cushion throughout) to keep 2 hands free! This dog is at the start of cooperative handling and so far, she's doing so well!

Just a little announcement with an important message. I am starting a new course in order to get my Clinical Animal Behaviour qualification.

I already have my animal behaviour degree, but I absolutely love to learn and am a complete nerd, especially when it comes to dogs 🤓

Remember, when looking for someone to work with you and your dog, always see if they are doing further learning, updating their qualifications etc.

This does mean that Mondays are my course days and so, I will not be doing in person sessions on Mondays. Always learn!

A slight rant this morning. Small dogs still have emotions, likes and dislikes. If you are harassing your small dog for comedic value on social media, genuinely, please just don't have a dog. Small dogs are so pick-up-able. Does that mean we should? Absolutely not. We need to respect their space. Associations can be built very quickly and dogs will escalate their behaviour in order to achieve what they need to (eg to not be picked up). I am aware some dogs are absolutely fine being picked up and safety is a definite reason to do so. But always watch your dog's body language and provide them with choice in that interaction.

Let's switch up our thinking...

⭐️PLEASE READ CAPTION ⭐️

I had comments on my last video about how I used play to help Hovis' resource guarding and so I made a video on it.

Resource guarding is SO complex and can be very stressful for the dog and their owners. This is a long way down the line for Hovis. We did NOT start off using play. We started off with distance and food and then worked on the cue with toys. Heavily reinforcing the "wanna play" cue with toys and gradually building this with lower value resources etc.

This may not suit every dog but has worked wonders with Hovis. So many variables could be contributing towards RG (pain, sleep, outlets, stress levels, genetics) and especially breeds that are genetically predisposed to RG could find this confrontational.

It will not suit every dog! But I wanted to share due to the comments that were left on my video.

If your dog resource guards, please speak with a qualified trainer/behaviourist because it must be worked on so carefully, and must be done for the individual dog!

The comments I've seen on some videos this week have been SO worrying. I wanted to put this out there because the last thing we want is people following crazy advice on the internet. Resource guarding is a complex behaviour and how it is approached hugely depends on the individual dog. However, we should NEVER punish, man handle, hit, put pressure on our dog when resource guarding. The fact this was recommended by commenters is atrocious. Using these 'methods' will only escalate the behaviour.

Today was a HUGE step for Macy! I have been working with her for a little while now and she has come such a long way! Macy used to be so hyper vigilant and really fearful of novelty. We started off in big, open, quiet space and have gradually increased criteria. Myself and her owner were smiling from ear to ear today 💜

My client sent me this wonderful picture of her 6 month old golden, calmly observing and processing his environment.

Socialisation/exposure as a young dog is SO important. But, it does not mean interacting with every single person and dog that you see. Interacting with the odd person and dog, is absolutely fine! However, a great skill to work on with your dog, is exactly what is going on in this picture. Processing and observing the environment and everything in it. Let your dog take their time and process their surroundings at their own pace! We are so quick to keep moving sometimes, that these opportunities are taken from our dogs. This helps to build a calm state of mind, great learning ability and the chance to take in all of the info that they need to. Also, lovely to see other humans walking past a cute puppy without feeling the need to interact with him 👏🏻👏🏻

Threshold can be really confusing for owners! In this video, you will see 2 dogs at similar distances, but 2 different responses from this Labrador. The answer here was energy levels of the other dog!

Which leads do I recommend? A question I always get! Trinkety-Paws

Hovis was a dog that was way more interested in the environment than anything else you could offer! Some would say 'aloof', and he is, he is a Spitz type. But to finally see him off lead and enjoying the world is the biggest reward for me. Learn to watch your dog. What do they enjoy doing? Running, chasing, digging, sniffing? Then use it, in your training!

Another long one - update on my last video! This dog did NOT need 'leadership' or an e-collar or a prong collar. In fact, this could have done her a LOT of damage. This dog needed someone to see what she was struggling with. I am so glad that Nala is feeling more comfortable, calmer and happier, simply because we have found the source of her frantic/manic mood state. ALWAYS check for pain/discomfort. It is something the previous 'trainers' massively failed to do.We've got this Nala 💜

Outdated methods are still being offered. This is about a new client who has an XL Bully and American Bulldog cross. Please listen to this video to hear the advice that was previously recommended and how it impacted the dogs. It shows a complete lack of education and understanding in dog training and behaviour, as well as a complete lack of compassion for dogs and their emotional well-being.

Having a Pom myself means that I'm naturally biased and have a lot of love for the breed. So, I am very excited to be working with this little bundle of fluff, Teddy!

With Teddy, we are going to be working on his big feelings around dogs (after being unfortunately attacked as an early adolescent), as well as building his confidence on walks.

Training around a deer, and apologies for the sniffles, it was cold! This used to result in a huge amount of frustration for Hovis, barking, lunging, chasing, spinning! He LOVES to chase. Did you know Pomeranians descended from larger spitz type breeds? As much as they are now considered a companion breed, they can also have an impressive chase drive!
