Knowing which professional you need to contact to help you with your pet is vital. Use this handy infographic to decide whether you need a trainer or behaviourist. Keep In mind, some behaviour challenges may require both training and behaviour modification so often these go hand in hand. What's great is that when you choose a COAPE Certified Animal Behaviourist, you can be sure that they have the skills to help you with both training and behaviour.

For a list of COAPE-endorsed trainers and behaviourists you can go to our website here: https://coape.org/find-a-behaviourist/

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

I do love a fox red lab....obvious why! Funnily enough Wispy does too, even though he's the exact type of dog that she would often try to avoid. He's big, young and very fast. She adores him.

Stress signs....they can be very subtle or are slap in the face obvious.
I know some people do struggle to see signs of stress in their own dogs...and I made this to help show some of the more common ones.
There are plenty of others...

Sniffing....attempting to disengage from a situation by being suddenly very "interested" in a scent.
Tail position.....Wags can mean the opposite to happy and stiff tails, high stiff "flag" tails.
Coat.....It can bristle completely or only in parts, tail, rear rump or along the whole spine.
Hesitancy.....suddenly stopping, changing pace, lowering the head and stretching it out.
Not all are listed and you may know your own dogs stress signals.
It is important to note that some of these signs are also shown when a dog is in a state of excitement....context and situations all need to be taken into account.
It is ok if your dog shows some signs of stress....it is communication and is very valuable information for you to quickly address what is happening, or about to happen.

Stressed dogs tend to have closed mouths and tighter faces, but those closed mouths open when drooling, panting or lifting the lips to give a front mouth grin.
Ear positions should also be looked at, they are often a sign of stress in many dogs...but not all.

I often get asked why I called our business ABC Dogs.

Behaviour is
Communication

I am increasing my 1 to 1 training slots every week now that I have more time available. Please get in touch if you need help getting started with a new puppy or rescue dog or have any specific training/ behaviour struggles that you would like help with.

Any training takes time and commitment but with the right help it should be fun, rewarding and successful.

If you are interested in learning about consent based behaviour training e.g. helping your dog feel comfortable with nail clipping, brushing, ear cleaning etc etc please get in touch.

Remember your dog is far more likely to accept having things done to them if they know they can say no. You are giving control to them. Force will never help them and this will make them less confident.

Consent based handling will take time and commitment but I can certainly help you.

RIP darling Red. You were the absolute perfect dog in every way.

Do you have a dog who is reluctant to walk? Before you label them 'stubborn', ask yourself what could be going on.
Are they comfortable in their collar or harness?
Is the weather very hot, cold, wet, or windy?
Did something upset them on a recent walk?
Are they in pain or suffering fatigue (especially if they stop during a walk)?
If refusal to walk is more than a one-off event and you can't think of an obvious reason, please take your dog to the vet for a thorough pain check up. Make sure teeth and ears are checked too!
If there is no physical reason your dog doesn't want to walk, take the pressure off for a while by training and playing games at home. Daily walks aren't essential. If the problem continues, seek advice from a behaviourist.

Just had a wonderful surprise from a client who gave a secret Santa gift in memory of my lovely mum to Action for Children. This is a charity that mum was pationate about. Thanks VERY much to all other clients and friends who have also donated. This has definitely brightened up my Christmas. Mum would have absolutely loved this idea.

Hope you all have a very Happy Christmas. X

Hello. I have decided this year to donate towards Action for Children instead of spending money on Christmas cards and gifts. As many of you know mum died recently and she was pationate about this charity. I would like to continue supporting it in her name.

If any of you lovely people were planning on buying me a gift or sending a card this year a charity donation would be amazing instead. No pressure obviously and hope I don't appear rude. Any support though would be massively appreciated

Also if anyone is looking for a carer mum's carer is still looking for more work. She cared for mum for 4 years and I promised I would spread the word that she is available for work. Please ask me for her details.

Seasonal canine illness is a condition that affects dogs in the autumn. While symptoms are treatable, SIC disease can be life-threatening.

I only ever recommend consent based grooming/ handling exercises. If a dog knows they can say "no" they are far more likely to trust you.
