We have some hot weather ahead of us and it is vital that we keep our pets safe☀️😎💦

For temperatures over 21 degrees take extreme caution and do not walk your dog.

Here are some signs of heatstroke:
🔥Panting (this can progress to distressed or noisy breathing)
🔥Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade of water
🔥Drooling
🔥Red gums or tongue
🔥Increased heart rate
🔥Vomiting or diarrhoea

Our advice to keep your pets cool:
🐾Walking dogs early in the morning when it’s cooler or not walking at all
🐾Regular grooming to remove dead hair
🐾Never leave your pet unattended in the car
🐾Avoid letting your pet sunbathe for long periods of time
🐾Provide plenty of fresh cool water
🐾 Make use of cooling coats and bandana’s ensuring they are kept wet throughout the day

If you suspect your pet has become overheated then please call the practice on 01954 620555 immediately 📞🆘⚠️

As the hot weather approaches this weekend, we thought it would be a pawfect time to remind you of our top tips on how you can keep your dog cool 🐕

It’s important to do all we can to keep our pooches cool, to prevent serious illnesses such as heatstroke🌡️

[Visual description: An infographic outlining our top tips on how to keep your dog cool. This includes: regular grooming, exercise early or late, make a sun shelter, cooling pads and vests, doggy paddling pool, homemade frozen treats and place fresh, cool water around your home and garden.]

Meet gorgeous Fozzi 🥰
The 9 month old German Shepherd puppy came in to see us earlier this week after developing a lump on his side.

After exploration of the lump under general anaesthetic we found three grass seeds which had penetrated through his skin and were causing a large inflammatory reaction.
After surgery to remove the grass seeds and reactive tissue Fozzi is now on the mend and loving life again 😎

Please check your canine companions after every walk especially their feet, tummies, armpits, and ears where grass seeds can be missed. If left on the coat they can migrate through the skin and cause a multitude of problems. Avoid walking them through long-grass if possible, especially if you spot grass seeds growing. And keep your dog well groomed this time of year so you can easily spot anything lodged in their fur.

If you think your dog might be suffering with a grass-seed injury please contact us for help and advice 🐾🌾☎️

You may remember Fletcher from our previous posts who is owned by our nurse Sophie. Fletcher has been on a weight loss journey over the past few months as he had gained a little too much weight due to a change in his diet. We are pleased to say he is now back to his target weight and looking super healthy as you can see in the photos below!

Keeping our pets at an optimal weight and checking their body condition score is so important. Checking our pets weight alone does not always provide a good measure of health so we always advise to use a scoring system. Sophie identified that Fletcher’s score had increased due to his change in shape and difficulty in feeling his ribs.

Do you need help with your pets weight? We are more than happy to help you score your pet so please get in touch 🐾🐕🐈🐇

🐱Is your cat microchipped?🐱

As of today, the 10th of June, all cats over the age of 20 weeks must be microchipped by law, or you could face a fine of up to £500.

🐈 If your cat hasn't been microchipped as yet, there is a grace period of 21 days from today to get them chipped so please call us to get booked in. Microchipping is £20.50 or included in the pet health plan for members.

🐈‍⬛ lf your cat is already microchipped, please ensure their details are all up to date by contacting the microchip company or feel free to ask us and we can help with this.

Microchipping is so important to keep our cats safe when they're out and about and help reunite them with owners if they go missing 💗

Meet Zuko 🥰🐈

Zuko came into us today for a dental procedure to have some tooth extractions. He is a very sweet boy and as you can see was totally relaxed before his general anaesthetic.

By removing the damaged teeth we have alleviated any discomfort therefore making him much happier when eating🦷 🐾 What a sweetie!

⚠️Grass seeds⚠️

It is that time of year when grass seeds are emerging in the long grasses! During the summer we see huge amounts of patients admitted into the vets with grass seeds lodged in the body.

Due to their pointy shape, they pierce the skin and work there way under the skin causing pain, irritation and infection. They rarely make their way back out without some assistance and they can travel a long distance once inside the body. The most common areas we see them in are the eyes, ears, armpits and paws.

We urge you to check your pets over after a walk and if possible avoid long grassy areas completely this summer. Keeping long haired dogs trimmed and fur short around the face, ears & paws can significantly help to reduce the seeds getting caught. If your pet is sneezing, licking a specific area or shaking their head after a walk then please get in contact with us straight away 🐾🐶🐱🌾

Please spread the word and share this post so we can get this important information across 😊

⭐️Rey and her babies⭐️

Rey came into visit us so we could give mum and kittens a little check over. We were also able to confirm the s*x of each kitten as this can be difficult to tell when they are so small. They are beautiful Burmese cats and are just adorable! 🐱

If you have any socks you would like to donate, you can just drop them into our practice. We would be really grateful! 🥰

🌷🌻☀️🦟🎑

Spring has sprung and we wanted to remind you of some common spring hazards! Keep your pets safe 🐾

Its spring and that means gardening! As well as calls relating to plant ingestion, here at Animal PoisonLine/VPIS we have seen an increase in enquiries about exposure to fertilisers and patio cleaner, slug baits and weedkillers. We would urge everyone to keep garden chemicals away from pets and follow all safety advice on the labels.

🪴Fertilisers - will usually cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but no serious effects unless eaten in large quantity

🪴Slug bait - metaldehyde slug pellets are very dangerous even in small quantity and immediate advice should be sought for any ingestion. Ferrous based baits may cause gastrointestinal upset but the risk of iron toxicity is low unless large amounts are ingested relative to bodyweight.

🪴Patio cleaners - these generally contain quaternary ammonium compounds. They are very irritant and may cause damage to the skin and the mouth. Cats are particularly sensitive to these products and can develop serious oral injuries , pyrexia and inappetance. They often require veterinary care and recovery can take several days. Walking through wet product can be enough to cause a problem .

🪴Weedkiller - toxicity will vary depending on the active ingredient in the product, dilution and level of exposure. Glyphosate (an organophosphate) and dicamba/phenoxyacetic acid chemicals are often present in products available widely for use in the garden. Follow instructions carefully, keep all packaging and seek advice after exposure. In all cases ingestion of the neat product is more likely to cause significant toxicity than walking through treated grass. Signs include gastrointestinal upset, skin irritation and neurological signs (in severe cases)

Happy Monday Everyone! 🌟
One of our lovely clients brought in some doggy cupcakes for us today made by her nephew. They depict Jelly the dog who we’ve recently treated with a sore eye. This was caused by the other dog flicking her in the eye with her tail!

We are pleased to report that Jelly’s eye has now healed well 😊
These definitely brought a smile to our faces and were delicious so thank you from all of the team 🐾🧁👍💕
