If your dog has ever had a sensitive stomach, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal issues, have you been told to “feed chicken and rice”? It’s everywhere. Even conventional veterinarians who are opposed to people food will tell you, “feed chicken and rice“ if your dog has a sensitive stomac...

Tail docking:

While plenty of u out there have a full tailed dog (and I have 2), without issue, our Pixel broke her tail, first day back at work, after her first litter, few years ago.

Pixel was born march 2017, a few weeks before the docking ban in Scotland was raised. I knew, given her lines, that she and her sister would have a whippy tail and they do! Her sister in aberdeen has constant blood shed on kitchen units etc.

Pixels tail was amputated, after she broke it. During the healing process, she was at risk of infection and losing further, however manuka honey SAVED her from further surgery.

Pixels offpsring are docked to avoid this in other families. Having gone thru it myself, I don't want others to experience the pain, and cost (as vets bills are horrendous) that Pixel went thru.

If u request a full tail pupper, don't be offended when I turn u away, THIS is the reason all working dogs should be docked.

Spring plants are a beautiful way to mark the beginning of a new season. 💐 But, before you fill your house with them, make sure you know what's poisonous to your pets.

Day 3 of Pet First Aid Awareness Month.

This post is going to be about a potential injury that can happen occasionally, especially to active dogs, working dogs, gun dogs etc.

If a dog lands on a fence post or a sharp broken branch they can damage the Brachial artery which is runs through the armpit. Like humans, it's a difficult place to tourniquet so the best action is to apply pressure immediately using your fist, hands, fingers etc

As the photograph shows, a tennis ball is a great object to use to help reduce blood loss. If a ball is squeezed in the armpit, it compresses the brachial artery, stopping the blood flow. Jam it in the armpit and keep it there hard as possible until you get to the Vets. It may just reduce blood loss enough for the dog to recover.

This is an injury I have had experience with working in Veterinary Practice

ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

There are many reasons why dogs don’t come back when you want them to. A dog’s genetics play a big role in this when an environment is far more stimulating and exciting and listening and coming back to you disappear into the background as genetic instinct takes over.

An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to you.

Genetics aside, a common reason why dogs don’t come back when called is because it’s not a positive experience for them.

I often cringe when I watch owners trying to get their dogs to come to them when they call.
They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually does come back, or has been chased and "captured” by their owner, they get screamed at, yanked about, smacked or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening. Why would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

Make coming back to you worth it by always making it a rewarding experience.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it rewarding will greatly improve the rate of success.

WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?
Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and enticing scents after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a quick pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of the world.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t fair and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?

Many owners have stronger bonds with their animals than with their family members, new research has suggested. Equine charity Brooke has published data from surveys of more than 2,000 UK animal owners, carried out last month. Results showed that three quarters of participants agree in some capacity....

❌ STOP SCROLLING❗️

That snow globe you have on the side may be dangerous to your pets.

Move it to a safer place such as a shelf that can't be reached, inside a glass cabinet, a room where your pets don't go or even consider having it out at all.

If broken it can take just seconds for your pets to get to it and the antifreeze can and has been fatal for dogs, along with the risk of broken glass.

Please make sure you share this with your clients, friends and families!

During the colder months, please be aware of the dangers of antifreeze. ❄️ Share this post and help spread the word! ⚠️

I have found that the best way to block out Firework sounds for your dog is Taiko Drumming.🪘🎼 It is the same frequency, I have attached a link, if you can put it on your TV or phone and let them watch and listen.📺 They will focus on it. Try it! It really works!🤩🐾 https://youtu.be/OIWFsVI9ilg

Firework season can be a stressful time for many of our pets, but there are things you can do to help. Please see our tips below ❤️
