During the ice and snow please take care whilst walking your dogs. Applying wax to pads before a walk helps to protect them. If you walk on gritted paths or roads, make sure you wipe their feet when you get home. Salt can be caustic and cause irritation and damage to pads. It is also dangerous if ingested, so don't leave it for dogs to lick off.
Coats and jumpers can be useful for short coated or older dogs, particularly, if they are going on slow lead walks.
Ice balls can form on longer leg hair during snowy walks. The best way to remove them, is with warm water. Be sure to dry them thoroughly afterwards.
Always make sure that your dogs are dried thoroughly and brushed out after walks. Wet dogs are cold dogs. Also with curly coated types, particularly poodle crosses, remember that the wet will tangle the hair, so be sure to keep on top of brushing to prevent matts.
Finally, if paths are too slippy for you, they are also too slippy for your dogs. Lots of injuries can be caused by slipping on ice, so please take care.
Let's all enjoy this weather as comfortably and safely as we can.
