🐔 Did You Know? Chickens Can Have Allergies Too!

It turns out our feathery friends can be just as sneezy and itchy as we are! That’s right, chickens can have allergies too.

Here are some fun (and slightly adorable) facts about chicken allergies:

Pecking at Pollen : Just like us, chickens can be allergic to pollen. Imagine a hen sneezing in the middle of a pecking session – it's as cute as it sounds!

Feather Fuss : Sometimes, a chicken can be allergic to its own feathers. Talk about unfortunate! If you see a chicken preening excessively, it might not just be vanity.

Food Allergies : Chickens can have food allergies too. Some common culprits are soy and corn. So, if you see a chicken turning up its beak at dinner, it might not be that you have a picky chicky.

Dust in the Wind: Chickens love a good dust bath, but did you know they can be allergic to dust mites? A sneezing, itchy chicken is not a happy camper!

Got Their Dander Up: Chickens can even be allergic to each other! Dander from fellow flock members can cause a reaction, leading to a kerfuffle in the coop.

But don’t worry! There are ways to help our feathered pals. Clean coops, hypoallergenic feed, and sometimes a little veterinary TLC can keep your hens healthy and happy.

Meet our Founder and Head engineer Ben! 👋

Over a decade ago, Ben was gifted a flock of chickens by his mother. With no prior experience of hen husbandry, especially the importance of safe bed times, he soon lost a couple of chickens to Mr Fox.

Sad, but undeterred, Ben set about designing and inventing a way of keeping his families remaining hens safe.

And from his mother's kitchen table, the first ChickenGuard automatic opener was created!

Fast forward ten years and we're proud to say that ChickenGuard is now an essential part of a chicken-owner’s kit and is sold in over 70 countries – we’ve come a long way from that kitchen table.

☀️Keeping your feathered friends cool during the spring and summer heat!

Summer's scorching temperatures can be tough on our chickens and it is just around the corner. Here are some simple tips to help them beat the heat:

1️⃣ Provide shade: Set up umbrellas, tarps, or natural shade structures in your chicken coop or run to give your hens a cool place to retreat from the sun.

2️⃣ Plenty of water: Make sure your chickens have access to fresh, cool water at all times. Consider adding ice cubes to their waterers to help keep it cool throughout the day.

3️⃣ Ventilation: Ensure good airflow in the coop by opening windows or adding fans to keep the air circulating. Proper ventilation is key to preventing heat stress.

4️⃣ Frozen treats: Treat your chickens to some frozen goodies! Fill a shallow dish with frozen fruits or vegetables, or freeze some mealworms in ice cubes for a refreshing snack.

5️⃣ Dust baths: Encourage your chickens to take dust baths, which not only help keep them clean but also cool them down naturally.

Chicken feeds are everywhere, and accessible to almost anyone, but did you know there are other ways to feed your flock?

Here are some all natural food ideas for your flock to keep them fed and happy!

🪲 Bugs and flies, they are an excellent source of protein and keep your house bug free.

🌻Sunflower seeds, you can find them in any garden store and if you plant your own you will not only have plenty of chook food, but something lovely to look at too!

🪱Worms are a favourite amongst out flock, and with all this wet British weather they are popping up everywhere. We always have a baggy with us and when we see one we save it for our feathered friends.

🐌Snails and slugs are NOT welcome in our veggie patch, but instead of using harmful chemicals we simply save them for our fluffs. The chickens love them and they are doing us a favour!
