This is the lovely Nellie, a very cute and friendly Jack Russell Terrier.

Nellie came to us with an ulcer in one eye and bilateral discharge. We found that she had Distichiasis on all four of her eyelids and she was in obvious discomfort.

We gave Nellie a general anaesthetic and performed cryo-surgery to remove all of the distichia.

We saw Nellie back a few days later, her eyes were slightly inflamed and uncomfortable but with medication she continued to recover.

At her final post op check she was given the all clear.. Nellie you are the best πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Ernie, a very friendly, but big Dogue De Bordeaux (French Mastiff)

Ernie came to see us with very sore eyes due to an ulcer on his right cornea, which was caused by entropion. Entropion is the rolling in of the eyelids, causing irritation. His left eye was also affected.

We corrected the lids and cleaned and protected the ulcer on the right eye with a contact lens.

Ernie came back a week later looking much more comfortable. The picture was taken at his post-op check.

We wish you well in your recovery Ernie, you gentle giant πŸ’šπŸ’š

This very cute puppy is called Merlot and came to us because a tennis ball had hit him in the left eye 😞 Merlot was trying to practice for Wimbledon we think, bless him.

The blunt impact of the ball caused a small bleed inside the eye. Fortunately there was no serious damage done and we were able to treat with topical anti-inflammatory.

The pictures show Merlot before and after looking cute and happy. We wish you well for the future Merlot you superstar πŸ’šπŸ’š

🌟Veterinary nurses play a vital role in the veterinary team, without them the veterinary surgeons would have great difficulty managing their caseload.🌟

🌟Veterinary nurses have multiple responsibilities within the team. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing some of their daily roles in practice.🌟

🩺Anaesthesia and preparing patients for surgery is a very important daily role of veterinary nurses.

Katie, our veterinary nurse, monitors the anesthesia during surgery and it is her job to make sure your animal is taken care of πŸΎπŸ’š

Here is the lovely Lily, a 1 year old Pekinese dog. Lily came to us because she was suffering with multiple ectopic cillia on all four lids plus bilateral entropion and large nasal folds, with hair touching the eyes.

Unfortunately all of Lily's issues were causing severe discomfort. We performed surgery on Lily to remove the ectopic cillia and reduce the nasal folds down. She also had a medial canthoplasty to correct her entropion.

Lily was amazing through-out all of her surgical procedures and went home the same day.

We have seen Lily back for her post-op check today and as you can see from the pictures she is looking happy and comfortable.

We were so happy to help Lily and the outcome has been amazing πŸ’šπŸ’š

We had the pleasure of meeting Wolfie, a dog in training for a very special job in search and rescue.

Wolfie came to us with a superficial foreign body in his right cornea. We were able to remove the foreign body under sedation, it had luckily not caused any significant damage

Wolfie you are amazing and we wish you well for your training in the future πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Princess an 11 year old cat that was brought in with an extremely painful eye.

On assessment, as you can see in the first two pictures, the cornea was infected and opaque. It was also not responding to antibiotics. We took a swab to send off to the lab to find out what type of infection she had. We also changed the antibiotics that were being used whilst we waited for the results.

As you can see in the next pictures, nearly two weeks later and after the antibiotics were changed, Princess's eye is healing well.

Well done Princess πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Nui a very cute Tibetan Spaniel that came to us with bilateral superficial corneal ulcers.

In Nui's case we could not find any underlying causes for the ulcers but this condition can become more common in older age.

We debrided the corneas and protected them with contact lenses and also started him on medical treatment.

Nui came back for a check up and as you can see in the picture is comfortable and doing well. Both corneas have now healed.

You've done so well Nui πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Vinnie a lovely French bulldog that came to see us because of a superficial corneal ulcer in his right eye.

We needed to sedate Vinnie to have a closer look at his eye and to debride and clean the ulcer. We then applied a contact lens for protection and we will see him back for a recheck in two weeks.

Well done Vinnie you cutie pie πŸ’šπŸ’š

Here at Eye Vetcare we strive to save eyes as much as possible and this includes performing corneal grafts (used in deep ulcers)

A type of corneal graft that we use involves using a grafting material called Biosis, this is made from animal intestinal sub-mucosa.

As you can see in the pictures of a cat we grafted recently, due to a large corneal sequestrum. The Biosis graft will clear leaving minimal scarring on the cornea.

This is only one of several types of graft that we can use but this type worked really well in this case πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Dougal, a Shih Tzu that came to us with a deep and painful stromal ulcer to his left cornea.

Dougal has Cushing's disease and other complications which affect the healing process. When he first presented he was quite ill and in a lot of pain πŸ’š

We repaired the cornea with a CCT graft. We were worried that it would take a long time for him to recover and that the graft may fail due to the other complications. We are very pleased that 6 weeks on his eye has healed completely and he is a very happy dog, as seen in the pictures.

Well done Dougal you superstar πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Atlas a Siberian Husky puppy brought to us after being scratched by the owners pet cat in his left eye.

By the time we assessed him, the eye was irreversibly blind and damaged beyond repair, sadly.

We would normally remove the eye in such cases but
as Atlas is still growing and the eye is not painful, or causing an issue we will not need to rush into surgery. We are keeping him stable with medical treatment, but eventually we may need to remove his eye.

Well done Atlas you are such a cutie πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Alfie a 10 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Alfie came to us because of changes to his left eye. His eye was visual and comfortable but his owner had noticed a shadow inside his eye.

As you can see in the pictures there is a mass growing just behind the pupil and distorting it.

This is certainly a tumour but is unfortunately impossible to remove due to its position.

These tumours are usually progressive and as there is no possible treatment we will need to schedule surgery to remove his eye at some point in the near future.

You are such a good boy Alfie πŸ’šπŸ’š

We had an interesting case brought to us a few weeks ago. Meg a 2year old German Short-haired Pointer, a very active working dog, was taken to her vet with a slight red and uncomfortable eye.
She was then referred to us for investigation for a possible foreign body.

After giving Meg a general anesthetic and looking under our operating microscope, We could see that there was a thorn actually inside her eye that had snapped off and the cornea had sealed over it.

To remove the thorn we had to cut through the cornea, retrieve it and then the cornea was repaired afterward.

Meg has been back for a post-op check and is doing very well. Good job Meg πŸ’šπŸ’š

Introducing the Slit Lamp, this is a very important peice of equipment for us here at Eye Vetcare and is worth a mention...

The type of slit lamp we use at Eye Vetcare is a portable one and enables us to move around easily when we have wriggly animals to examine.

A slit lamp has two parts- a very bright light source that's shines through a slit and a microscope. It allows us to be able to look at individual parts of the eye in better detail. It especially helps us to look to the back of the eye, in particular the retina.

The slit lamp helps us to diagnose various different eye conditions and we could not do our job without it πŸ’šπŸ’š

Meet Millie a lovely Shih Tzu that came to us with bilateral poor lid conformation and shallow orbits. This meant that her eyes were always protruding and at risk of prolapsing. She also had constant reoccurrence of infections and discharge.

We corrected this issue with a medial canthoplasty surgery and lateral canthal tightening.

Millie has been back for post op checks and is doing very well and is much more comfortable. The photos show Millie before and after surgery.

Well done Millie, what a cutie πŸ’šπŸ’š

We were trying to evaluate a picture of a dogs eye ulcer that her owner sent in to us, what can you see if you look closely? Any guesses, who the characters are? πŸ˜†πŸ’š

It was difficult not to get distracted by this picture and gave us and the owners a little bit of a laugh.

We were able to help Lilo by treating the ulcer and all is well. We won't disturb you in furure Lilo whilst your watching your favourite program on tv πŸ’šπŸ’š

Remember Cookie who came to see us when he was 5 months old because of a dermoid on his right eye

Well today he was back for his surgery to remove the dermoid. This was excised under the operating microscope, luckily the resulting defect in the cornea was not too deep so a graft was not necessary.

We then covered the eye with a third eyelid flap for protection and comfort. We plan to see him back in 10-14 days.

Well done Cookie you were brilliant today, such a good boy πŸ’šπŸ’š

Here's a spooky case we had in recently just in time for Halloween πŸŽƒ

Meet Dixxee a lovely cat who came to see us with a very sore right eye.
She started having acute ocular discomfort straight after sniffing the owners pet tarantula πŸ•· whilst he was being moved into his home.

The discomfort went on for several weeks and was resistant to every treatment. When we saw her she still had superficial keratitis and had developed a secondary entropion due to the discomfort.

We corrected the entropion and treated the keratitis and two weeks later she came back with her cornea fully healed and much happier and more comfortable.

What an unusual case, we know it often happens in humans that have pet tarantulas at home, but not very often with cats and dogs 😱 πŸ•·πŸŽƒ

Well done Dixxee your a star but we are glad you didnt bring your eight legged friend to visit πŸ•·πŸ˜„πŸ’š

Meet Eddi and Leo two dog brothers that came to us with exactly the same eye condition. They both had stromal ulcers in their right eyes πŸ‘ which we think were the result of an accidental chemical injury.

We treated them with CXL (corneal cross linking) a procedure which stops the rapid degeneration of the cornea associated with these kind of ulcers and helps to promote the healing process.

A week later they were both improving very well. The last picture was taken 3 weeks later and they were back to their normal mischevious selves.

Well done both of you, you are superstars πŸ’šπŸ’š
