Brrr… winter has definitely arrived! 🥶

Here’s a little cold weather checklist to help keep your horses happy and cosy:

❄Pop on the appropriate rug (our rugging guide can help you decide)
❄Give those water buckets a quick check so they’re not frozen solid
❄Keep the forage coming - digestion helps them generate warmth
❄A warm mash makes a lovely winter treat
❄Take care turning out on frosty grass, the cold can make it extra sugary

Exciting changes have started happening at Lingfield East 🥳

We now have new Monarch Stocks in place, happily being tested out by a very cute visitor to our clinic today!

This is one of the first phases of building works occurring at our practice as a commitment to improving our care to all of your equine companions.

It’s that time of year again when we start thinking about winter worming plans ❄️

Before reaching for your winter wormer, it’s really important to check whether your horse actually needs treatment for tapeworm. The good news is that we can find out easily with a simple saliva test!

This test will show whether your horse requires praziquantel – the drug used to treat tapeworm. Most horse owners choose to worm against redworm* in the winter, so this result helps you decide whether to use Equest (moxidectin only) or Equest Pramox (moxidectin + praziquantel) for both redworm and tapeworm 🪱

*We recommend testing for redworm which is done through a blood test.

By testing first, we can avoid unnecessary worming and help reduce the risk of wormer resistance. We only have a few effective drugs left, so it’s important to use them wisely.

• Regular faecal worm egg counts through the year
• Tapeworm saliva test
• All required wormers
• Twice-yearly weigh-ins for accurate dosing
• Tailored advice for your horse (because it’s not one size fits all!)

Today, we pause to remember not only the brave soldiers who gave their lives in times of war, but also the loyal animals who stood beside them. Horses, mules, dogs, pigeons, and countless others that carried supplies, delivered messages, offered comfort, and faced the same dangers as the men and women they served with.

Their courage, loyalty, and sacrifice remind us that the cost of war was shared by many.

We honour them all. Lest we forget.

⚖️ Can you tell if your horse is at a healthy weight? Just looking isn’t always enough!

Fat cover needs to be checked at key spots over the ribs, crest, withers and tailhead. Using a 0-5 Body Condition Chart, the numbers should be as below.

🔴Too Low 0-1
🟢Ideal 2-3
🔴Too High 4-5

Tip: Run your hand over your horse’s ribs, you should be able to feel them easily but not see them sticking out.
