It’s been great having Jemima with us this week from St David’s Vet Centre, she’s interested in exotics and has been learning the basics! Pictured here with Dupree, a blue fronted Amazon parrot that came in today for a checkup and microchipping.

The owner’s are unsure if Dupree is male or female so we’ve sent a sample out for DNA sexing.

It’s always good to pass on useful information to veterinary colleagues and Jemima has had a very varied week, with everything from frogs to marmosets and plenty of rabbits, parrots and tortoises in between!!

Keep in touch Jemima 🙂

Nova was in today for a check after laying an egg this morning!! She’s lapsed on her contraceptive implant and we’ll be putting in another one in the near future, once things have settled.

Look how vibrant her plumage is!!! Stunning 😎

Tikki the sugar glider came in this week with a hard lump under his jaw. We did some investigations, including X-rays and became concerned about infection in the bone around the mandibular incisors. Tikki came in today for these teeth to be extracted. He’s on some medications now for the next few weeks.

It’s a lot to go through for a sugar glider, especially one between 8 and 9 years old.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a full recovery!!

Isn’t he beautiful 🤩

Norman the guinea pig was in today for a CT scan, pictured here with our senior exotics nurse, Lauren who spends all of her nursing time with exotics.

We are investigating some upper respiratory noise. There can be lots of underlying causes, including dental disease, rhinitis, rhinoliths, nasal foreign bodies, nasal polyps, nasal septal defects etc.

A CT scan is a very detailed three dimensional scan that provides us with a lot of detail and is an extremely useful imaging modality in many exotic species.

We should have some results very shortly and hopefully we can get to the bottom of things!

This beautiful baby grey parrot Luna, has been in this afternoon. Sadly, she had an accident at home and sustained some damage to her foot, with a dislocated digit and a nasty bleeding wound. She’s had some surgery and thankfully, it looks like she’s going to be just fine!

This picture was taken after surgery.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a full recovery!! 🦜

We’ve got a rabbit dental and a spay to get done this morning. Here Hannah, one of the RVNs that rotates through exotics and Jemima - a vet from St David’s Vets who is with us this week to learn more about exotics, are placing an IV ready for a procedure!

We place IVs in all our rabbits prior to anaesthesia, which allows us to give IV fluids and drugs, including emergency drugs if required

A spay and a dental is a very routine procedures list for us! 🐇 🐰

Happy National Bird Day!!! 🦅 🦢 🦜

Pictured is our specialist vet Tariq and Rio the barn owl. Rio was in this afternoon after getting tangled up in some netting. Thankfully, we don’t think his injuries are serious and he’s gone home with some medications.

Isn’t Rio handsome!!!

Tort the leopard tortoise was feeling peckish and thought she might try a bit of Holly while with us for her re-check today!!!!

She’s been under treatment for Mycoplasma, but she’s doing really well. When she first came in, her eyes were so swollen that she was struggling to open them. Now things are virtually back to normal 🙂 🐢

Meet our new Small Animal & Exotic Vet, Aimie

Aimie is a vet student at the University of Surrey, who will be joining us in July when she graduates. A cool thing about Aimie is that she is already an RVN, so when she graduates, she’ll be both a vet and a registered veterinary nurse, which means she brings a huge amount of different skills to our practice!!
She will be one of the few veterinary professionals in the UK that’s qualified in both of the main clinical roles seen in veterinary practice.

Aimie has been interested in exotics for a long time and did her dissertation during her nursing degree on the housing and husbandry of bearded dragons. We have had the pleasure of having her for EMS (placement) on a couple of occasions and we’ve been so impressed by her knowledge and skills.

Outside of work, Aimie enjoys painting, arts and crafts and spending time outdoors with her dog, Mickey.

Tariq will mentor Aimie and we hope that she will pursue a certificate in exotics longer term. While with us, she’ll be sharing her time between Valley Exotics and with the first opinion dogs and cats downstairs at Valley Veterinary Hospital.

We can’t wait until she starts and we really think we’ve struck gold with her!

Calypso the Kakariki came to see us today, with conjunctivitis. There can be various causes for this in birds, including infectious diseases, local infections, trauma, ocular toxins and extension from other processes, such as sinusitis.

We are running some tests to help narrow things down a little bit and we’ve started Calypso on some treatment in the meantime. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a positive response! 🤞

This lovely lizard is Buddy, a desert iguana with some lesions around his lips.

Buddy has tested positive for a bacterium called Devriesea agamarum, an infectious bacterial disease seen in lizards, with diurnal species such as dragons, uromastyx and iguanas seeming to be predisposed.

This condition can be carried asymptomatically, but typical clinical signs include crusty lesions around the mouth and vent. It often progresses to a septicaemia, which can be life threatening.

The good news is that it is treatable! We’ve got Buddy on some appropriate treatment and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery 🤞
