Coco
The lovely Coco,a Blue and Gold Macaw visited us last week for a beak and nail trim.
She was a little nervous at first but soon was enjoying some head scratches from the nurses.
Reducing stress and allowing positive interacts like this helps improve the care we can offer your pets 💛
Meet the amazing Icecream who visited us recently to have a lump removed.
Here is Icecream’s day at the vets. We’re pleased to say Icecream has healed well 💕
Meet the lovely Hunny 🐰
Hunny has osteoarthritis and at 11 years young she’s doing well with medical management and weekly laser sessions with our exotic RVNs 🐰
Hunny seems to really enjoy her laser sessions, relaxing during her visit and sometimes even repays the nurses with licks during her session 💕
Wilfred was a bit too excited for his pellets!
Hiding your pets food and making them work a little harder for those tasty treats is a great way to mentally and physically enrich their day to day lives
As you can see it didn’t take Wilfred long!
We would love to see some of your enrichment ideas for your pets 🐰
Happy Halloween for yesterday!
Henry the Timneh Grey parrot approved of his pumpkin 🎃
*fake candles were used
Bertie came in this week for his annual health check and beak/nail trim!
Who knows what species he is!?
🐰 Rabbit awareness week 2023 🐰
We’re excited rabbit awareness week is here! 🎉
We would love to see some photos and videos of your rabbits enjoying themselves!
Bumblebee the armadillo tucking into his Emeraid yesterday, shortly after recovering from a general anaesthetic for a dental procedure. He is a three banded armadillo - such interesting little creatures!!
Pepper the African Hedgehog
This incredible patient is Pepper the African Hedgehog!
Pepper was in today for surgery to remove a cystic mass on her belly. It was a fairly big surgery for such a small animal, but she was tucking in about 40 minutes after coming out of theatre - amazing!!
African pygmy hedgehogs are very prone to developing tumours and sadly, a lot of them turn out to be malignant. It's really important to keep an eye on these guys and seek veterinary advice straight away if you notice any lumps or bumps!
Isn't she delightful!!!
We would never normally condone bringing any animal to the vets in a pram. In this case, Skittle's owner has modified a pram to hold a parrot travel cage, to facilitate moving Skittles to the vets on public transport. The pram has the advantage of keeping the carrier very steady while being transported and actually seems to work very well for Skittles.
Our nurses think it is hilarious watching Tariq the vet coming in with a pram!
Skittles is one of our long term patients and has come on leaps and bounds since her current owner took her on. She's an Eclectus parrot - a species famous for being sexually dimorphic - males are green and females are red!
This really brightened up our day!!!!
A minimally stressful way to trim a ferret's nails! This is Chester! A small amount of salmon oil can be used as a distraction!!
Chester comes to see us with his companion Nina from across the bridge in Bristol - they are always a joy to have in the practice!
Isn't he gorgeous!!
Bunny
Little Bunny the hamster really enjoyed her Emeraid omnivore following her surgery! It is important to feed our very small patients once they have sufficiently recovered from an anaesthetic, to maintain their blood glucose levels.
Happy rabbits 🐰💛🐰
🐰Bonding rabbits🐰
Unfortunately in the uk over 40% of rabbits live alone.
Rabbits are highly social creatures and although many of our rabbits may enjoy our company we are not able to provide social interaction that they would receive from other rabbits.
As prey animals, rabbits rely on the company of other members of the warren. A rabbit kept on their own will experience a higher level of stress and anxiety.
Although same sex pairs or groups can work, the ideal bond is between a neutered male and neutered female of a similar age.
Rabbit bonding should be done slowly with the correct steps taken to ensure a secure happy bond!
If you are looking to bond your rabbit’s why not speak to our team to get some tips!

Syringe feeding rabbits 🐰
Syringe feeding is something that we need to do all too often when our rabbits are poorly.
Our exotic nurse Lauren has made a video on how we can do this at home! 🐇🐇
#RAWfest2020 🎉
Ronnie the ferret came to see us for an extremely itchy ear. Examination of a swab from the ear revealed the scene in the video. A large number of ear mites and eggs!! Thankfully, he’s now on some treatment for this and hopefully will feel less itchy soon! We’ll look to take some more swabs in a few weeks to check how effective the treatment has been.
Maggie the Ferret
Maggie was in today for some dental treatment. Look at her demolishing her Emeraid shortly after coming around from her anaesthetic! Isn't she lovely!!!
Blood sampling a chicken
A lot of people are surprised to hear that we sometimes run bloods on sick chickens.
The area under the wing is cleaned first and once the needle is inside the vein, a finger is used to keep the plastic needle base still. In general, we don’t wear gloves for this procedure, unless there is a specific need (for example a suspected infectious disease) as it can reduce dexterity and the veins are much smaller than in many other animals!
Some pressure is applied after and while the birds don’t enjoy it, the process is all over in a few seconds and can provide lots of useful information for making a sick bird better! 🐔
Day 11 - Fabric tunnels
The Easter bunny loves tunnels! 🐰 Create a tunnel with a spin, by using an old trouser leg and attaching it to the tunnel.
You can use toilet rolls and socks for your much smaller pets!! This is a great one to try with your pet ferrets as well!!
Day 3 - Hanging the washing out!
Using a sock hanger to attach your pets favourite snacks, bunches of hay and toys can also be suspended!
Make sure to supervise your pets to ensure they don’t get up to any mischief! 💛
