LAMENESS AND SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC

We are delighted to offer a combined Lameness and Sports Medicine clinic at Rockfield Vets with David Agnew BVSc GPCert(EqP) MRCVS and Naomi Smith Chartered Physiotherapist - ACPAT Cat A.

Whether for a specific problem, competition support or part of a preventative medicine approach to horse care, a multi-disciplinary approach can have significant benefits for your horse’s performance.

We are aware at Rockfield Vets that there has been some concern and worry recently regarding Equine Herpesvirus so we thought it would be helpful to provide some easy to understand information and guidance regarding this disease.

Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) is a contagious viral infection which can cause respiratory disease, abortions and neurological disease.

There are 2 main types of EHV:

* EHV1 This type can be severe causing abortion and Neurological disease

*EHV4 This type mostly causes respiratory disease

Once a horse is infected, that individual can harbour the virus throughout its life and potentially shed the disease to other horses without showing any outward signs.

Re infection and shedding from infected horses tends to happen when they are stressed - typically moving yards or in hard work.

EHV does not stimulate significant natural immunity after initial infection, in fact the horse is susceptible to re-infection after just a few months.

Vaccination has been proven to reduce clinical signs and decrease viral shedding. Vaccination is an important part of a comprehensive protection strategy.

Vaccination guidance:
Primary course involves 2 vaccinations 4-6 weeks apart, following with booster vaccinations every 6 months.

For in foal mares they require the initial primary course followed by a vaccination at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation (pregnancy)

If any horse owners have worries or concerns please contact us for support and advice - we are here to help.

Thank you for everybody’s interest in the fantastic new diagnostic tool that we are able to offer our clients! The Ovacyte Faecal Worm Egg count is really useful for not only your general Worm Egg Count checks but it can also be used for concerns with weight loss, diarrhoea, colic and general failure to thrive in all horses from foals to veterans. The Ovacyte offers one comprehensive analysis which provides results for ALL FOUR types of worms (Redworm, Roundworm, Threadworm & Tapeworm) from one single test making this a more financially cost effective option than running each test individually. If you require any more information regarding this test, including pricing information, please don’t hesitate to contact us 🐴💩🪱

Each test will provide a result for Redworms, Roundworms, Threadworms and Tapeworms. 🪱💩

A rescue with a happy ending!

Meet Pepper, a 24 year old pony who managed to get himself stuck in a ditch and required David’s assistance on one of the coldest days of the year! 🥶🐴

Thankfully we are happy to report that with the exceptional help from the Gorsaf Dân Ac Achub Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr / Bridgend Fire and Rescue Station Pepper was safely (after a long 2 hours) removed from the ditch and back in his stable to be warmed up.

Several days on, with the help of a tractor and a sling, along with some wonderful nursing care from his owner, we are delighted to say that Pepper is now back on his feet and doing well.

We are so fortunate to have access to amazing resources such as The Large Animal Rescue Unit in Bridgend.

Well done to all involved 😀

Rockfield Vets are excited to announce that we have added an Equinosis Q Lameness Locator to our diagnostic tools, making us the first equine practice in South Wales to be able to offer this service!

Have you ever found yourself saying....something about my horse just isn't right? The Equinosis Q Lameness Locator can help!

The Equinosis Q Lameness Locator is a Veterinary diagnostic system used to objectively measure a horse's movement. The Equinosis Q is used as part of Lameness investigations, Lameness identifications, Poor performance or as a general monitoring tool to survey your horses movement. The locator is particularly useful in assessing the response to nerve blocks and in cases of multi-limb lameness. It can also be used to assess a horse's progress through a rehabilitation programme.

The Equinosis Q provides an analysis that indicates;
🐴 whether the horse is lame
🐴 the severity of the lameness
🐴 the limb or limbs involved
🐴 the part of the motion cycle at which the horse is painful (impact lameness when the leg hits the ground or a push off lameness as the horse switches legs)

How does it work?
Wireless sensors are positioned on your horse's body which are linked to a tablet the feeds back and analyses the results. The computer takes precise measurements of how the horse moves with greater detail that the human eye can not see. The horse is worked on both a straight line and on the lunge. A report is immediately produced, identifying which legs are showing lameness and the phase of the stride in which the lameness occurs.

Interested in booking an objective lameness evaluation? Please contact Rockfield Vets on 07595 711390 for further information
