Elf tries his hand at an ear examination, both manually and under the microscope! 🔬

Elf used a cotton swab to scoop out a sample from the patient’s ear. This sample is then spread on to a slide and stained with special stains. It can then be examined under the microscope for mites, yeast, bacteria and inflammatory cells. This sample is showing yeast! 😲
This cytology helps guide the vet to the most appropriate treatment. If bacteria is found, swabs may need to be sent to an external lab for culture and sensitivity in order to prescribe the best antibiotics 🦠🧫

🎄🧚🏻‍♀️✨ TWELF DAYS OF CHRISTMAS ✨🧚🏻‍♀️🎄

Today, Elf is using a muzzle to examine his patient. Using muzzles doesn’t mean a pet is necessarily aggressive! 🐶 🥅

For many people a muzzle provokes fear or defensiveness or even shame as they are often associated with dangerous dogs or punishment, rather than a simple, humane tool that can help us keep pets and people safe. Stigma around a muzzle is dangerous and can create challenges for us as veterinary professionals and we may suggest a muzzle for a number for different reasons when your dog is visiting us.

Muzzle training is an important part of training any dog and it is NOT about labelling a dog as dangerous. Unfortunately, too many dogs first experience with muzzles is when they are in pain or stressed and can be rushed and frightening, resulting in a negative experience that's encased in pain and fear. Starting muzzle training as early as possible is perfect, but any dog can be taught to wear a muzzle safely and comfortably without stress. The saying 'you cant teach an old dog tricks' is very outdated! 🐕‍🦺

Please contact us if you would like to learn more. The dogs trust also have free online training at https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/training/outdoors/muzzle-training

🎄🧚🏻‍♀️✨ TWELF DAYS OF CHRISTMAS ✨🧚🏻‍♀️🎄

Today Elf joined one of the nurses to monitor a patient under anaesthesia! It is always a qualified nurse doing this vital job 🩺🤓

All patients under anaesthesia are continuously monitored, reducing risks as much as reasonably possible. To aid us in monitoring our patients, we use several monitoring devices including:

⏱️ Pulse oximetry - which monitors how well the patients blood is being oxygenated

⏱️ Capnography - this machine monitors the amount of carbon dioxide in expired breath, enabling us to see how the patients respiratory system is functioning

⏱️ Blood pressure monitoring - this is extremely important as it provides information about the cardiovascular system. If blood pressure is too low, vital organs may not receive enough blood to meet their needs

⏱️ ECG - this monitors the electrical activity of the heart and can detect any cardiac arrhythmias

⏱️ Temperature - a reduction in a patient’s temperature can cause a prolonged recovery time. Regular monitoring can help prevent and treat this

The anaesthetist is able to use these machines and alongside consultation with the Veterinary Surgeon can interpret the results and act accordingly!

🎄🧚🏻‍♀️✨ TWELF DAYS OF CHRISTMAS ✨🧚🏻‍♀️🎄

Mr Elf is doing some diagnostics today, focusing on the 2 largest cavities in the body - the chest and the abdomen!🫀🩻

Often vets use stethoscopes to listen to animals’ chests to assess how their heart and lungs sound. This is important to assess both the heart and breathing rate, as well as detect any abnormalities such as murmurs, abnormal rhythms, crackles, wheezes and unexpectedly muffled sounds.
In order to find out more about these abnormalities, ultrasound scans are used to look at the organs in the chest or abdomen. This usually requires a sedation, some clipped fur and some gel to get an image 🩺🔬📺

🎄🧚🏻‍♀️✨ TWELF DAYS OF CHRISTMAS ✨🧚🏻‍♀️🎄

Here is Elf putting a fetching bandage on a patient, let’s say he has a cut on his paw 😉

When a leg is bandaged, it is protected! 🩹🐾
It’s very important to keep this protection intact to prevent any infection or interference. They must never get wet as the bandage material can constrict and cause even more problems!
Bandages are only ever to be done by a veterinary professional - so a vet or veterinary nurse (or a cheeky elf, just this once 😇)
