Congratulations to guide dog owner Julie Thomas, who won a gold medal at the recent European Lawn Bowls Championships in Ayr. It was the first time that Para Bowls had been included in the championships, and the competition provided quality bowling and drama. Julie and team-mate Steffan James won a final end shoot-out to decide the Gold medal in the Mixed VI Pairs.

The flight to Scotland was a first for guide dog Yoko, who coped brilliantly with the new experience. Julie said: “I showed her ID card, we breezed through security and then she proceeded to have a nice snooze on the plane! We were seated in the front row and I brought a yoga mat for Yoko to lie on, totally unfazed. A woman on the end of the row was really nervous, but stroking Yoko kept her calm.”

The venue was a buzz of bowlers, different languages, coloured flags and shirts. The busy atmosphere and large numbers of people meant that Yoko needed to be at her best, navigating through the crowded food halls, moving to the different greens for each game and waiting patiently while Julie sailed undefeated through the tournament. Julie said: “She takes all this in her stride, enabling me to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the experience.”

As the final loomed, Yoko was straight into action, navigating Julie through the crowds at a good pace to get refreshments and a short leg stretch and sniff break before heading back for treats, a quick cuddle and the medal showdown, which was a nail-biting battle of skill and tactics that ended in victory for Wales.

Team Manager John Wilson said: “To have gone undefeated throughout the whole tournament, our vision impaired bowlers Julie and Steffan truly deserved to win the Gold medal. To do it at the first ever inclusive European Bowls Championship is something that will always be remembered.

“Yoko is an incredible guide dog. It is wonderful to see how well the
partnership works. She was brilliant to see at work at the
Commonwealth Games and again at the Europeans. She is a real
credit to the organisation.”

Julie added: “Yoko makes all of this possible for me. She enables me to travel around with a great deal of independence and is amazing at
navigating new places we visit. I am reassured when we stay
anywhere new that she will be able to get me to and from my room
with no fuss. After one visit she can always find our room. On a recent trip away she even alerted to a fire alarm. She is one in a million.”
