Racehorse Rescue Centre

Racehorse Rescue Centre We create innovative programmes that other charities follow, using rescued horses to change lives. It is an Approved Rescue and Re-training Centre by the RoR.

The Racehorse Rescue Centre (RRC) is a registered charity No. 1150864 based in Carlisle, serving the whole UK. By rescuing ex racehorses we give them a secure safe environment and the opportunity to move onto new careers once they have finished racing. We are not just a Rescue Centre
We provide free programmes to disadvantaged groups throughout the UK to help them develop their skills in the comm

unity such as injured soldiers, probation services, disabled, employment services, colleges and therapy for people suffering from trauma or depression. We are 100% volunteer run so any help goes direct to the horses and not on salaries. The Racehorse Rescue Centre works with the community through its highly motivated volunteer team. Horses that come to the Centre are given time to go back to their roots and allowed to socialise with the other horses to build up development and confidence. We retrain ex racehorses to their best ability and find new caring homes that will secure their future. Other horses that work well with our programmes will stay at the Centre to help educate the community in the importance of how equine therapy can help disadvantaged groups. We have other older horses that are harder to re-home and these will stay with us if no homes can be found. The RRC do not sell horses on and keeps ownership for the rest of their lives. The Racehorse Rescue Centre relies on donations from the caring public, companies and its trustees. Any funding is spent directly on the horses and to help secure their future. The trustees have been rescuing ex racehorses for the past 25 years and started the charity in 2010 to help create awareness of the problem and to get the community more involved. We believe it has a bright future ahead thanks to the hard work the volunteers put in and with the support of the community throughout the world we hope to continue to grow.

The same child is in both photos. The only difference is how they're dressed.

As we approach shorter daylight hours, whether you walk, cycle, horseride or drive, make sure you can be seen.

So dust off those hi-vis vests, light up dog collars, cycle lights and perform light checks on your vehicle.

The brighter the better!!!

Peak ashes have arrived in New Zealand where he was born. Bry, his former jockey is taking care of him.

He had us all worried as he disappeared in the postal service and ended up travelling to New Zealand, back to United Kingdom and back to New Zealand before arriving at Brys home a month later.

Thank you to all who supported him through the years he was with us. He is sadly missed but will never be forgotten.

Peaks ashes are on the way to New Zealand where he was born. He will be set free by his jockey who has a beautiful spot waiting for him. The rest of his ashes will be scattered around the Centre here in Cumbria in the U.K. where he spent nearly half his life in retirement. Peak past away early this year at the age of 30. πŸ’œ
We will update you when he arrives safely.
If you would like to donate something to the horses here on behalf of Peak it would be much appreciated.
Thank you to all who have supported him and shared his birthdays with us every year. πŸ™

πŸ‘€ It seems to be the year for bots with quite a few customers concerned at finding eggs on their horses and seeing bot larvae. The good news is that bots are usually only harmful to horses in large numbers.

πŸ€“ There are three main species that affect UK horses and we often see findings of G. intestinalis (the common bot) which lays pale yellow eggs on the hair of the body. This summer, a rarer species of this fly, G. haemorrhoidalis (the nose bot) has appeared. This reproduces by laying black eggs on the hair around the horse’s nose and lips. How its pupae then show up is a bit icky, and why we've blurred the image! If you want to see a clear photo, then steal yourself and follow the link, at the end of this post, to our web page on bots!

Once passed in the dung and out in the open air, the little reddish armadillo type larvae pupate in the soil for a few weeks before the adult bot fly emerges. The flies themselves only live for about 2 weeks; long enough to lay their eggs on the horse’s coat. Look out for these and be ready to scrape as many off as you can find, before they get ingested into the horse’s mouth to continue their lifecycle.

πŸ’Š Bots are best treated with a moxidectin or ivermectin wormer in the late autumn or winter after a hard frost which will kill off any last flies. Many people combine this with their winter wormer for encysted redworm.
