Preventing rumen bloat with a red devil trocar ๐ฟ๐ฎ
A red devil is a trocar which is placed into the rumen to release gas when an animal is severely bloated.
The red devil remains in the animal, and can be opened and closed as and when it is needed.
There are 2 main types of bloat in calves;
Gassy bloat - caused by;
๐น Oesophageal obstruction
๐น Vagal indigestion after puenomonia
๐น Tetanus
Frothy bloat - caused by;
๐น Excessive legumes, clover and grain in their diet.
Ever wondered what the process of freeze branding cattle is? โโ
Freeze branding uses copper alloy irons chilled in a dry ice solution. Applying these alloys to the cattle can alter the hair follicle pigmentation - meaning black/darker hair will grow back white in colour!
Within around 3 months, the branded area will have healed and the cattle will be permanently identifiable.
Restraining the animals is super important for freeze branding so that the numbers are not wonky or distorted - we use a low stress cattle handling device called the Easy Boss E, which distracts cattle perfectly.
