JB-K9 would like to welcome the beautiful Zeus!

This absolute stunning example of a Malinois has some VERY solid foundations.

He's come to us with a young handler (only 18!) With hopes to eventually compete in the many sports available to a dog of this caliber.

Watch this space guys, we've got a real contender in the ring now 💪🐾

Credit where it's due! 🐾

Cooper & Harry came to JBK9 because of a few issues:

- General Obedience
- Managing puppyhood
- Separation Anxiety
- ETC.

Nothing untoward there for us...

However what's AMAZING is the progress they've made thanks to their handlers VERY hard work.

Keep smashing it guys 💪🐾💜

JBK9's Theory Post 🐾🐾

So there’s almost a direct split among the people that message me about problems they are having with their dog training.

You’ve got person 1 and Person 2

Person 1 says they have a problem and wants to book a session immediately. We converse a little and they just keep wanting to book a session yesterday. Person A usually travels multiple hours to get here, pays instantly and does every single bit of homework you set them because they want the results bad!! They’re the joy client!

Person 1 is the winner, the go getter. The one whose putting 110% effort in and in next to no time their problems will be on the road to being sorted.

Person 2 says a 30 minute drive is too far, or they can't come to a session because of X, Y or Z reason and is always too busy for any slot you offer them so you stop offering them slots because you’re not gonna work with them. Then all of a sudden the Trainers the problem.

Person 2 is the one who slates trainers all over social media, spouts about how bad their dog is and expects quick fixes.

Person B likes the idea of an obedient, Lovely dog but is reluctant to put that vital effort in.

You’ve got to want the results yourself. If you're struggling and not doing EVERYTHING in your power to do something about it, maybe you'll know which group you've fallen into.

At the end of the day - it's not my fault your dogs not behaving if you haven't taken on board the advice I have given, worked on it and reaped the benefits.

We can only do so much in an hour and I am far from a miracle worker. YOU have to put the work in in YOUR own time and TAKE CHARGE of your own training.

Put the effort in and you get a happy dog but as the old saying goes...
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

Paddy's home visit!

Today I popped round to Padsy's house to help his owners deal with him barking at visitors.

Typically, people would come in and he'd bark his head off. Not settling at all and generally being a pest.

Today, we taught him to go to his place, calm down and earn his greetings from his visitors!

With enough work at home, he shouldn't have an issue anymore 🐾

(Pic was sent to me but you should all see it too lol)

Dog Sport: The One Thing You Need! 🐾

“He’s so talented.”

“He’s such a gifted trainer.”

“I wish I was as good as she is.”

“She’s so smart.”

“She’s a natural.”

No doubt about it, there is a sea of talented dog trainers and handlers out there. And in the mass of people trying to make a name for themselves in the industry, trying to build their businesses, or trying to break into competitive sport, there are no doubt the “naturals.”

Ever witness a natural in action? The ones who have such fluid movement you think they must have had an early career as a dancer? The ones who don’t even think, they simply react, and everything seems to always work out?

Ever look at your own work and think, “Good God, I look like an elephant trampling through the forest when I work my dog?”

Do you ever look at these “naturals” and think, “Will I ever be that good?” or “Will I ever make it in competition?”

I know I do. And I bet I’m not the only one.
But the crazy thing is, as we compare ourselves to other trainers, handlers, dog owners, and people, what we fail to realize is that talent and success do NOT go hand in hand.

Take a minute to let that one sink in.

Talent and success are not the same thing.
Sure, so-called “naturals” might have some successes. In fact, at times, they may seem to rise to the top at lightning speed. But there is one trait that sets those who stay at the top apart from those who falter. And that trait is more important than talent alone.

The single trait that consistently sets the best trainers, the successful handlers, and the successful competitors apart is…

Their mindset.

In fact, after meeting and observing literally hundreds, if not thousands of dog owners, dog handlers, and some of the most incredible and well-known trainers in the industry (and after working for three years at a company that teaches mindset for business leaders and individuals), I’ve begun to look first at mindset, and then at skill. I’ve found that this helps me more reliably predict the propensity of a person to excel and be successful in their work. Skill and talent alone will only get them so far. Mindset will take them much further.

World-renowned psychologist, Dr. Carol Dweck, has explored this phenomenon in detail in her research, and in her groundbreaking book, “Mindset.”

In her book and research, she discusses what she refers to as a “Fixed Mindset,” and what she calls a “Growth Mindset.”

She’s observed that “the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value.”

She goes on to say that, “Believing that your qualities are carved in stone – the fixed mindset – creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over.” She points out that people with the fixed mindset believe that, “Every situation is evaluated: Will I succeed of fail? Will I look smart of dumb? Will I be accepted or rejected? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?”

I bet you’ve encountered a trainer who operates with this mindset. In fact, I’d venture to say that, driven by our modern culture, and things like social media, the fixed mindset is more prevalent than it’s counterpart.

Think about it.

Ever met a trainer, dog owner, or heck, another human being who constantly needed validation? Whose self-worth was tied up in their accomplishments?

Ever met someone who didn’t want to learn and explore new approaches because they didn’t want to be proven wrong? Someone “stuck in their ways,” and perhaps a bit argumentative, hell bent on being right rather than finding the most effective approach?

Or how about someone who views other trainer’s work and thinks, “I’ll never be able to do that?”
Do you know someone like that? Better yet, see yourself in any of those descriptions?

I know I do from time to time. Especially when it comes to “needing validation,” and comparing myself to other trainers.

But here’s the thing.

In dog training, people who operate in this manner inevitably get stifled by their fixed mindset and are rarely successful. Perhaps they will have a few successes, but they tend not to persevere. Either they don’t ever make it to competition, citing excuse after excuse, because if they don’t win, it will make it painfully obvious that they are NOT talented. Or they skate by on talent alone, until talent alone isn’t enough. Then, when confronted with a loss, they take it as a reflection of their lack, either placing blame to protect their ego or labeling themselves a failure and quitting altogether.

Eventually, even the most talented trainers who operate in this mindset fizzle out, working hard to protect their image, ego, and fixed talent, rather than learning and growing and getting better.
Dr. Dweck goes on to say teach about another mindset, the “Growth Mindset”, where your traits are not fixed but instead, a jumping off point for development.

People with a growth mindset would, therefore, think: “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem, instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you?”

Ultimately, the growth mindset is what sets apart the good trainers and competitors from the great ones. It isn’t timing. It isn’t skill. It isn’t technique.

In fact, I don’t care if you are all thumbs with your leash, you trip over your own feet, and you believe operant conditioning is how you cool your house.
With the right mindset, you can knock some of the most talented trainers out of the water.

Why?

With the growth mindset, you love the challenge. You will work tirelessly, learning, strategizing, growing, and improving your training.

You value the journey more than the destination.
You crave hard work and are constantly learning and evolving your method.

You don’t value the path of least resistance. You wouldn’t feel fulfilled if things were easy.

And you know that while you might not overcome every challenge you are presented with, you will always learn something new.

In this mindset, you persevere and grow despite challenges.
And the best news is, you and only you are in control of your mindset.

Every day, you get to choose whether you work to prove yourself, or you work to improve. And just recognizing your mindset is a step in changing it.
Which mindset will you choose?

Check out Dr. Dweck’s book if you want to learn more about shifting your mindset.

As always, thanks for reading guys.

Ratching and reminiscing...

The message here still stands guys 🐾

Obedience isn’t just about fancy tricks and loose lead walking... it’s about co-existing with your canine companion in your day to day life.

The old quote goes ‘Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole’

Therefore do we not owe it to them to make sure they can function in every aspect of our society? 🤔🐾

Cracking session today with the beautiful Dexter!

This fluffy puppy is a Newfoundland taking part in our Puppy course!

Today he's been working on that all important loose lead walking and as you can see he's absolutely smashing it!

Huge thanks to my gorgeous partner Genna Fowler from No Label Dog Training for taking the time out to come and catch these videos for us and stitch this together 🐾

JB-K9 would also like to give a HUGE warm welcome to Ronnie!

This handsome fella is a Boxer X with some issues towards people and not all that much confidence in himself.

His time working with us will be used to build his foundations, establish some confidence in the big man and hopefully get that tail back up in the air and wiggling again!

Next up let me tell you guys about Paddy! The Huntaway who most definitely lives up to the breeds expectations of being LOUD.

He came to us, owners distraught after wasting a LOT of money on other trainers.. with very few practical results.

Anyway - we're 4 sessions in now and Paddy (and his owners) have gone from strength to strength.

He's now walking to heel like a champ, walking past dogs and even practicing that all important impulse control daily.

Fact of the matter is - nothing changes unless you do the work.

(This picture does him NO justice - he's stunning) 🐾

It's been a while since I've made a post so let's update you all on what we've been doing here at JB-K9!

Where to begin?

We'll, let's start with little Cooper! The wee ginger once with a whole heap of attitude. Cooper came to us with some issues regarding separation from his brother & a lack of general Obedience.

We're a few sessions in now and he's absolutely smashing it! (With the help of my moose)

Student Spotlight:

Ripley, the Radge Badge himself.
One of a kind, handsome as hell and one heck of a journey..

But don't take my word for it, his handler Dawn has this to say:

'Ripley was a year old when he came to me. He was very happy, very enthusiastic and jumped at every opportunity... as well as buses, cars, people and other dogs. He also chased birds, to the point of obsession. We struggled to get him out because he was such hard work and we could barely get his attention in the house, let alone outside. I did what I could but I knew we needed help.

Now, I can confidently take him out for loose leash walks, he's an office dog, he listens to us and he chooses to lie down outside instead of doing laps of the garden chasing birds he'll never be able to herd. We play tug and we 'work', which he loves. He can do a few tricks and, most importantly for me, we can now communicate with each other; he knows what's expected and I know what he needs.

JB-K9 has not only changed Ripleys life for the better; our home, while still full of his collie attitude (and fur), is much more relaxed and fulfilled with our very beloved pet. Ripley has his 'work' (training) which we both love and will continue you to do for years to come. I want to teach him more tricks as well as firm up some of the basic obedience we've learned from JB-K9 so that we can keep having fun!'

Keep smashing it guys 🐾

After class today we had big Chester in for his 1st session.

Chester is with JB-K9 to work on his manners & General Obedience.

Today we got started on those all important fundamentals and he flew through it! So much so, I totally forgot to get a clip/picture.

So here he is looking handsome as hell at home 🐾

21/08/2022

This clip isn't much... but it's everything.

This was this mornings group class taking a quick break.

Look here, several dogs all focused on their handlers, playing well and not interested in each other.

The weight of just this is astounding.

THIS is what you can get if you train.

Blown away is an understatement when it comes to little Flossy!

This wee one is just FLYING.

When I 1st met this little one LAST WEEK she was a barky, nervey little one who took a little while to warm up to me!

Today, after a little work on some systematic relaxation...

Well...

See for yourselves 🐾

This little Frenchie is a big softy really but has some underlying issues that are quite common in a young dog!

We had 2 1st timers today.

Little Penny and big ol' Ziggy both came for their 1st proper training session and it's safe to say they NAILED it!

Both worked on their engagement but with entirely different approaches.

We used play to build engagement with Penny and let me tell you, if I could take her drive and bottle it I'd be a very rich man!

Ziggy on the other hand was motivated by food, so we did our usual eye contact game, they key in his session today was staying active im order to keep his attention.

🐾 Remember, engagement is the foundation on which all learning is built. 🐾

As we all know, we start at the beginning. Engagement! That word I throw around all the time.
