⭐️STAR OF THE MONTH ⭐️
Pi’s story explained by our Vet Ruth:
Pi came into the practice one Sunday morning having been missing for 24 hours or so. There had been a thunderstorm in the middle of the night and the owners heard him return home shortly after that. They spotted some blood on his paw and he didn't want to move or eat that morning so they knew there was something wrong with him.
It wasn't until I examined him that they realised the extent of the problem! I could see Pi's liver through a small wound in his skin - this is not normal!! After some strong pain relief on board we examined him more thoroughly and took x-rays. This confirmed that Pi had ruptured the muscle in his body wall, herniating the contents of his abdomen, only being held in by his skin. We also found loads of tiny maggots at each wound site, the smell was horrendous! After a thorough clean removing as many maggots as we could see, nurse, Donna and I took him to surgery. I checked all his organs were ok, flushed his abdomen then stitched him all back together! He was soon awake and he was able to go home that evening. The rest of his recovery was smooth. He was kept indoors until his staples were removed and he was signed off. We still don't know how on earth he sustained these awful injuries and he'll never tell us!
What amazed me was how resilient he was throughout the whole thing, he was purring and padding his feet happily even when he was being x-rayed. He really was a star patient!
Pi’s owners wanted to say a few words:
We are still amazed at his recovery thanks to your skill.
He’s such a lovely cat and was so brave after his op, he just got on with it and within a few days he just wanted to get back outside. He’s totally back to normal now, his fur has all grown back and he spends most evenings sitting on my lap and rubbing his head on my beard.
Well done Pi!
