At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month - we will remember them.

We will be marking Armistice Day by joining the national two-minute silence at 11am, taking time to honour all who served and sacrificed - including the animals who stood alongside them.

How much exercise should a puppy get? 🐶

It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked - and for good reason!

Getting your puppy out and about early is so important. During their socialisation window (3–12 weeks old), puppies are most receptive to new sights, sounds, smells, people, and other animals.

Of course, they’re not fully vaccinated for much of this time, so it’s important to be cautious - let them meet vaccinated dogs and new people in safe environments, but avoid high-risk public areas until they’ve had their jabs.

🚫 Over-exercising growing puppies can affect their bone and joint development, leading to long-term issues like arthritis or hip dysplasia.

Instead:
✅ Provide short bursts of mental and physical stimulation throughout the day
✅ Let them explore and sniff - don’t expect to go far or fast
✅ Slowly build up their walks as they grow
✅ Avoid stairs and high-impact activities (like jumping) until they’re fully grown
✅ Walk them for five minutes per month of age

And don’t forget diet - a complete, balanced puppy food supports healthy bone and joint development 🦴

Be patient - they’ll be out exploring in no time just like Graham and Clova 🏔️🐾

November is Pet Diabetes Month 💙

There are two main types of diabetes that we see in pets:
🔹 Type 1 which is more common in dogs, occurs when the body produces insufficient insulin
🔹 Type 2 which is more commonly seen in cats is when enough insulin is produced but the cells don't respond

It is important to bear in mind once a pet is diagnosed with diabetes, they usually require lifelong treatment and lifestyle adaptations to manage it.

If you are concerned your pet may be showing the signs above, please get in touch.

What is antimicrobial resistance (AMR)? 💊

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing problem worldwide, and it affects human, animal and planetary health.

It happens when bacteria become resistant to the medicines we use (antibiotics) to treat infections. AMR means antibiotics don’t work as well as they should and sometimes, they won’t work at all.

That’s why it’s important that antibiotics are always used as prescribed and any unused antibiotics are disposed of safely.

We're proud to be taking part in the countrywide Animal Medicines Amnesty and are encouraging clients to return any unused or out of date antibiotics or any unused medication to us for safe disposal.

Simply bring them to one of our practices ✅ and we'll sort the rest.

Bonfire night is almost here, and we know this can be a frightening time for some pets 🎇🧨

Here are a few things you can do to help your pet feel a bit more comfortable:

👉 Close curtains and blinds
👉 Allow free roam of the home
👉 Walk your dog during the day
👉 Keep your cat indoors
👉 Create a covered den for your pet to hide in with some blankets to dig or nest in
👉 Provide food-filled kongs and toys that can help to keep pets occupied
👉 Have the TV or radio on, so there is background noise

If you need further advice, please call us on 01228 710208 📞

⭐️STAR OF THE MONTH ⭐️

Scally’s story explained by our Vet Katrina:

Scally was presented to us with white gums, panting and collapsed. After multiple tests we diagnosed Scally with IMHA (immune mediated haemolytic anaemia) which is a rare condition where the body's immune system attacks its own red blood cells. This can become life threatening, like it did with Scally, if the red blood cells get too low.

Scally quickly received a blood transfusion, with help from a donor dog, to supplement his red blood cells. This allowed his body to respond to the medication that stops his immune system attacking his own cells .

Scally was hospitalised for 3 days with us as he underwent the transfusion and supportive care. Scally requires monthly check up’s and blood work to monitor his PCV (packed cell volume) which tells us how many red blood cells are in his circulation. Scally’s owner has been dedicated to his recovery- which can sometimes take months.

Scally’s owner Margret said ‘Scally is recovering well at home and enjoyed his first bus trip to Keswick recently’

Well done Scally!

🎃 It’s HOWL-oween 🎃

Here are some things you should look out for to help your furry friends avoid a frightful trip to the vets 👇
🍫 Chocolate is toxic to our pets, as are some sweets too, especially the sugar free ones which can contain an artificial sweetener called xylitol.
👻 Decorations, toys and even parts of fancy dress costumes can be a hazard too. If these are ingested by your pet, they can cause blockages which is very dangerous and may mean a surgical intervention.
🕯️ Pumpkins and candles can also be a hazard for wagging tails and inquisitive cats, so it is best to keep these out of reach.

We're proud to be taking part in the Animal Medicines Amnesty 💊

Everyone has a role to both use and dispose of veterinary medicines responsibly to protect pet and human wellbeing, and the health of the environment. That’s why we are taking part in the Animal Medicines Amnesty to make sure unused medicines are disposed of safely.

Getting involved is easy:
👉 Check to see if you have any out-of-date or unused pet medications at home.
👉 If so, simply return them to your veterinary practice for safe disposal.

Pet medicines should never be disposed of in household waste as this can contaminate the environment. They shouldn’t be kept for future use on pets either as this can result in dangerous side effects.
