Maggie was joined by Baloo, Albie, Dougie and Benny. We headed out West for one of our occasional walks on Allonby beach. As usual, we had this massive area more or less to ourselves. Boy, didn’t the dogs make the most of it. A beautiful day at the seaside.

Maggie was joined by Murphy, Indy, Halle and Ernie. We started off from Scales in reasonable weather, plenty of cloud about but glimpses of blue sky as well. By the time we reached the top of Mousethwaite Coomb we were well and truely in the mizzle, which stayed with us for the rest of the day. The dogs loved their dip in Scales Tarn, as usual. It was then a punch up to the top of Blencathra. We dropped to Glendermackin Col and up onto Bannerdale Crags. It was then a descent to White Horse Bent and back to the van. A lovely day despite the weather.

Happy New Year everyone.
What a relief to get off the sofa and back on the fells. My goodness I think I overdid the mince pies, it was hard work today!

It was back up Skiddaw by my favourite route, via Ullock Pike. We started near to The Ravenstone hotel and soon got onto the lovely ridge onto Ullock. The mist came down so views were somewhat restricted as we went over Longside. Given the mist, we didn’t bother going to the actual summit of Carlside. It was then the steep pull up onto Skiddaw before dropping down over Broad End, the rain now fairly steady. This really is a cracking route.

And there goes another year flown by. Have to say we have done some excellent walks. One of the dogs favourites is round the Gelt Woods area, so that is where Maggie, Baloo, Albie, Benny and Freya headed to. At one point we walked slap bang into a big shoot. The 3 Spaniels were desperate to join in the fun, I had to have them on the lead for quite a while as they kept running back to the guns. Order was restored and we had a lovely walk before our week off. All the very best to everyone for a great Christmas

With 65moh winds forecast, there was no question of going up high today. However, my youngest joined us for the walk and she is busy collecting Wainwrights. So we decided to repeat a walk we did just a few weeks ago. Maggie, Murphy, Indy, Halle and Ernie set off from the bottom of Catbells. We headed round to the Terrace path and even at that low altitude the gusts of wind were tremendous. We headed along to Hollows Farm and up to the lovely Castle Crag. Then it was a beautiful walk back along the Lake shore. You can see that Grace is a bad influence, pit stops for mulled wine are not a regular part of Maggie’s Treks!

We were back on familiar territory today, round Carrock and High Pike. Maggie was joined by Jazz, Lexi, Eric and Murphy. Although we walk a fair bit in this area, I chose it today so that we could have look for Nova, a little black Terrier who has been missing in the area for over a week. We did our usual ascent up Carrock Fell and onto High Pike, before dropping nearly to Fellside. We then took a long slow walk back along the track, keeping a sharp eye out for poor Nova, but no luck. Let’s hope she turns up.

Lovely day for a walk up Geltsdale for Maggie, Baloo, Alby and Dougie. Our usual climb onto Talkin Fell, then over to the top of Simmerson Hill. It was fairly breezy so we decided to have a walk along Geltsdale rather than go up Cold Fell. A lovely fresh day.

We really are getting spoilt, another dry day on the fells for Maggie, Murphy, Indy, Halle and Ernie. We set off from Mardale Head and made for Nan Bield via Small Water. We started making our way up Harter Fell, but cut off into Kentmere Pike trying to get a good pucture of a cloud inversions over Kentmere. The inversion was retreating before us, didn’t get a great picture but you could see it stretching out over Furness. We then headed over Harter Fell, down to Gatescarth and up onto Branstree and over to Selside Pike. We dropped to the Co**se Road and followed that back down to Haweswater.

Lovely day again for Maggie, Freya, Lexi, Jazz, Eric and Murphy. We set off from Keswick and made our way over the shoulder of Latrigg. We then took a fairly direct route up onto Lonscale Fell. It was t-shirt weather on this climb with a fair bit of warmth from the winter sun. Once we reached the summit we had to layer up again as we hit a breeze. It was then over Jenkin Hill and on up to Skiddaw Little Man. After lunch it was the short climb onto the top of Skiddaw. It was then back down the tourist path. A lovely walk on a lovely day.

A lovely way to finish the week. A leisurely walk in Gelt Woods for Maggie, Baloo, Albie and Dougie. Is was much milder than previous walks, hopefully we will get back onto the Lakeland Fells next week. A heck of a lot of shooting going on with quite a few dead birds lying around. If your dog isn’t quite ready for his tea tonight then you know why!

I decided to give the Lakes a miss again today, I’m glad I did seeing some pictures from friends who were out. Maggie, Murphy, Jazz, Lexi and Eric headed the shower distance to Talkin Fell. It was up and over that fell, and on up to Cold Fell. It was lovely sunshine all the way to just about the top where there was a bit of mist hanging about. It felt much colder than last week due to a fairly significant wind.

We dropped down over Brown fell then took the path round to the Forest Head Quarry trail. It’s easy to spend a good hour walking round this old industrial site. A really enjoyable day

Maggie was joined by Lexi, Jazz, Ernie and Murphy. We headed out to Mosedale, the northern Lakes didn’t get the snow that other areas did. However, I hadn’t considered that they had still experienced the very low temperatures. We set off along the track to Skiddaw house. We made it about half a mile before making the decision to return to the van. Everything was frozen solid and very dangerous. The first photo was of the path, it looks as though it is simply a wet path but it is actually completely frozen.

We made our way back to Gelt Woods and had a lovely walk there. Probably back there again tomorrow, let’s see.

Well, three glorious days of fell walking this week. Maggie was joined by Baloo, Alby, Benny, and Dougie. We headed for the fells, starting with Talkin Fell, then the Brown Fell route up onto Cold Fell. The weather was fantastic and there are very few viewpoints better than Cold Fell on a clear day, from the Cheviots round southern Scotland, to the Solway and The Lakes. As we came back down over Talkin Fell the Lakes looks particularly lovely with a lot of ground mist in front.

Another cracking, cold day. Maggie, Murphy, Indy, Halle and Ernie headed to Scales at the bottom of Blencathra. It was up Mousethwaite Comb then taking the path along and up to Scales Tarn. You could tell how cold it was as none of the dogs wanted a swim! As we approached the top of Blencathra it was a stop to put my coat on, a very cold wind had started up. It was beautiful on top. Then over to Foule Crag and the drop to Mungrisedale Common, a great day to do that particular walk as the terrible bogs on the Common were all completely frozen. Round to Glendermackin Col and down the valley back to the car. Days don’t get much better than this, just top it off we are off to see Jools Holland at Newcastle.

We are having a good spell of weather at the moment. Another beautiful sunny, cold winters day for Maggie, Murphy, Lexi, Jazz, Dougie, and Eric to enjoy. We headed to Braithwaite and set off up Grisedale Pike. Although it was cold it didn’t take long to get a good sweat going. It is always hard work on this path but I love it. Slight breeze on the top cooled us a little. It was then down to Coledale Hause and up onto Grasmoor along the top of Dove Crags. Our first bit of snow for the year. It was absolutely beautiful on Grasmoor, and not another person on sight. Then back down to Coledale Hause and along Coledale to the van. A fantastic day on the fells.

Normally on a sunny day like this I would head straight for the fells. However, for some reason I fancied a walk in Gelt Eoods today. Oh the benefits of being your own boss, Gelt Woods it was for Maggie, Baloo, Albie, Benny, Dougie and Tara.

Wind was the problem for Maggie, Murphy, Indy, Halle and Ernie today. Gale force winds forecast for the tops. So it was back down to Catbells. We managed to get over the first ‘hump’ then we got the full force of the wind. Blown over a couple of times, then when my glasses went flying I thought it was time to seek shelter. We dropped to the terrace path, following that through Hollows Farm and up the rough but beautiful little Castle Crag. It was then back down through Grange and the lovely walk back along the lake shore. Fantastic walk for the conditions.

Another lovely Autumn day in the Lakes for Maggie, Murphy, Lexi, Jazz, Eric and Dougie. Setting off from Great Wood we took the path that crosses the front of Walla Crag rather than the steeper route up by Cat Gill. It was so warm on the summit, and with such a fantastic view, we were in no rush to leave. We eventually dragged ourselves away and ascended Bleaberry Fell. Then over to High Seat. We took the path down to Ashness, the views over Derwent Water were magnificent. It was then a simple walk along the path skirting Falcon Crag and back to the van. Some more of this weather would be most welcome.

Maggie was joined by Baloo, Albie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy. We started off from the top of Mosedale and headed along the Caldew, past Skiddaw Hiuse and round the back of Great Calva. It was then up and over that fell and onto Knott, before dropping down to Lingey Hut and back down to the van. Really enjoy this time if the year, lots of cloud banks around and the area to ourselves. And the waterproofs stayed in my bag!!

Rain was hammering down when I left home, forecast wasn’t great either. So Maggie, Lexi, Jazz, Eric and Murphy set off to Pooley Bridge intending to walk along the lake shore. However, like last week, the weather was not too bad when we got there. So instead, we did the regular route of Arthur’s Pike, Bonscale Fell, Loadpot Hill. On the way back we had a good walk round Askham Fell, as I’d never been up there. A lovely day, it’s always better when there is a climb involved. Couple of showers and that was it.

Great finish to the week on Cold Fell today for Maggie, Baloo, Albie, Benny, Dougie and Tara. The mist was very low on Talkin Fell, we rushed up onto Brown Fell hoping to catch a cloud inversion, but most of the mist just evaporated. Still, we were left with a lovely sunny morning so no complaint there. As usual, we had the place to ourselves and the dogs had a great run around.

With a mixed forecast Maggie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy headed to the bottom of Catbells. It’s a great starting point on days like this. If the weather is terrible then there are lovely walks by the lakeside, if not too bad then over Catbells and down to the lake, or continue along to High Spy with its many variations.

This morning was actually one of those fantastic sunny, autumn mornings. It was a delight going up Catbells, banks of mist added to the scenery. The black clouds ahead were clear to see, so we dropped to Manesty and along to the Chinese Bridge. There are beautiful riverside walks from there. It was then back along the lake, by now in torrential rain. The colours were just amazing. A beautiful, beautiful walk (2 beautifuls, I must mean it).

Lovely day out today for Maggie, Dougie, Lexi, Jazz, Eric and Murphy. We started out from St Peter’s Church in Martindale. It was the steep, but short, climb up onto Steel Knotts, or Pikewassa if you prefer. We then took the well graded path onto the ridge which we followed to High Raise. A quick loop of Rampsgill Head and Kidsty Pike, before coming back over High Raise and retracing our steps. A grand day out.

Almost a rain free walk, it couldn’t resist drizzle for the first hour. Got out into a good, clear day. We did a bit of a different route today with Maggie, Baloo, Benny and Tara, staying in Geltsdale rather than heading up high. Beautiful nonetheless.

Seems a bit churlish to complain about the weather when we hear what folk in the South have had to put up with, but it was a miserable day weather wise. Very low cloud all day, constant rain, fairly strong wind on the tops.

However, that didn’t stop Maggie, Murphy, Halle, Indy and Ernie from having a great old romp around. It was up Carrock Fell from Stoneends, then over to High Pike. Path down to Fellside and the bridle way back to the van. A real favourite which we can enjoy in any weather.

Didn’t see a single person all day, I wonder why?

On our run down to The Lakes the cloud was quite broken and it was a reasonable forecast. So Maggie, Jazz, Lexi, Dougie, Eric and Murphy set off from Scales to head up Blencathra. We were soon in the cloud and rain. It stayed with us until we were down at Glendermackin Col. It’s still a great climb even without a view. We headed down the valley to White Horse Bent. Not the longest walk that we have done, so we decided on a quick up and down of Souther Fell, which had the great attraction of being cloud free. Then it was back to the van and another cracking walk completed.

Some very sad news. You may have noticed that our beautiful Flat coat, Zaba, hasn’t been out with us for a few weeks. He has been having a bit of trouble with his hips, but we were hopeful that he would be back out with us again soon. Tragically, an infection set in and he passed away over the weekend. Our condolences to all his family.

Zaba was one of the ‘originals’ with Maggie’s Treks, and over the years we have walked many many miles together. What a lovely, gentle companion he has been. I will certainly miss him in the walks to come, as will all his four legged friends. It is always sad when one of our companions passes, but we must remember and celebrate the fun, love and companionship he has given us. RIP Zaba

It was up to the top of Newlands today for Maggie, Murphy, Dougie, Jazz, Lexi and Eric. We stole a few hundred feet by starting off from Newlands Hause. It is quite a steep pull up onto High Snockrigg, but worth visiting this top for the beautiful views of Buttermere. Then up onto Robinson, over to Hindscarth and eventually onto Dale Head. Then back over to Robinson and back to the van. What a cracking little walk this is.

I’m having a few days away later in the week hence the Monday walk. Maggie was joined by Albie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy. We headed to Nardake at the head of Haweswater. We took the excellent path over Rough crag and Long Stile onto High Street. Then round to Mardale Ill Bell. Down to NannBield Pass and over Harter Fell. Down Gatescarth back to the van. A cracking walk.

Given the forecast of heavy rain and very strong wind we decided it was a Gelt Woods day for Maggie, Slby, Baloo, Dougie and Tara. Hardly saw a soul all day even though the weather didn’t quite get as bad as expected, not down in the sheltered woods at any rate.

I would love to tell you where Maggie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy have been today but I’m not exactly sure. We set off from the top of Mosedale heading onto Coombe Head. We were soon in very thick mist. We continued onto Knott, intending to head over to Frozen Fell and down to Trusmador. Initially, there isn’t a path for this route but I have done it many times. It became clear that wherever I was, it wasn’t on the way to Trusmadoor. It’s amazing how the mist can make a fool of you even on very familiar ground. I quite enjoy little outings like this, I can see the dogs looking at me thinking ‘poor old bu**er doesn’t know where he is again.’ I eventually found myself just off the summit of Knott again. Don’t ask me how. It was then back down to Lingey Hut and down to the van. A really interesting day.

With the weather due to deteriorate in the next day or so we thought we should go high. So I set off with Maggie, Jazz, Lexi, Dougie, Eric and Murphy from Swirls car park and the steep path up onto Helvellyn. The walk started in a t-shirt but 2 fleeces and a good coat had been added by the time we reached the top. It stayed dry though, that’s the main thing. For a change, we headed North from Helvellyn and took in the tops of Whiteside and Raise. We dropped straight down the Western flank of Raise and back round to the car park. A great walk which certainly blew the cobwebs away.

Another week done with our usual walk in the North Pennines. With a couple on holiday, Maggie was joined by Baloo, Albie and Dougie. We set off on Talkin Fell, having to walk around the front of the fell to avoid the cows. As we made our way up Brown Fell the wind really picked up, the rain came in and the mist descended. At the top of Cold Fell, I usually enjoy eating my lunch with my back to the trig point, enjoying the view south along the line of the Pennines and across to The Lakes. Today was one for sitting in the shelter out of the wind and rain. Typical for the weather at this time of year, when we were ready to leave the summit, we could see the sun trying to break through. It wasn’t long before we were walking in lovely sunshine. A great way to end the week.

Beautiful sunny day for a change. Maggie was joined by Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy. We parked in Keswick, at the end of Spooney Lane and headed up round Latrigg to the top of Gale Road. We then took the Tourist Path. I don’t know why, I really don’t like that way up, it’s steep and stoney, just not nice. I had enough and cut off up onto the ridge. It was very warm until we reached the top of Jenkin Hill, where the wind turned very cold. It was then over Skiddaw Little Man and onto Skiddaw. Fantastic views all the way. We came down the Tourist Path, as it offers fantastic views ahead of you. Great to be out in the sunshine again.

A couple of weeks ago I said that my favourite of the shorter rounds was Barrow/Causey Pike. Now I do love that walk, but this one had obviously slipped my mind. Fleetwith Pike/Haystacks is definitely my favourite of the shorter rounds, as I’m sure it is for many people.

My daughter is adamant that it should be Haystacks first but I find the steep descent of Fleetwith very heavy on my old knees.

So off we set with Maggie, Dougie, Jazz, Lexi, Eric and Murphy, getting the hard work done first, which is what I always prefer to do, up the ridge onto Fleetwith Pike. The wind picked up and the rain came down, but it couldn’t spoil such a lovely walk. It was round to Haystacks then down Scarth Gap. A great walk.

Another wet and windy one. Rather than go up the fells, we decided that Gelt Woods was a better option. So off we set, Maggie, Benny, Dougie and Tara. It was a lovely walk, the leaves just starting to turn. Funnily enough we didn’t see anybody else. Not as many pictures as usual, I think the phone may have got a bit damp.

We set out today knowing that the forecast was bad, heavy rain and strong wind, gale force on higher ground. So Maggie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy set off to Portinscale intending to do some sort of walk up Borrowdale.

We got to Catbells. It was wet and windy, but not that bad. So we thought we would get at least one fell in. At the top it was a bit wetter and a bit windier, so we decided to press onto Maiden Moor. Still not too bad, so on we went to High Spy. The last half mile to the third top was the only time the wind was severe, but we managed. We always prefer to climb if we can. We just retraced our steps, cutting off to have our lunch at Mrs Tiggywinkles cave. Sandwiches were soaked but the dogs didn’t let them go to waste!

Sunny with occasional light showers was the forecast on Weatherline, which is usually good for forecasts on the fells.

Maggie, Dougie,Lexi, Jazz, Eric and Murphy set off from Braithwaite up to Grisedale Pike. The rain was hammering down all the way. We were sheltered from the wind by the fell but I could see what we were in for when we reached the top. Sure enough, we got the full force of it, it really was quite difficult to keep my feet. All thoughts of heading onto Grasmoor, the original plan, we’re shelved. We headed straight down to Coledale Hause and back along the valley. A lovely walk but not lovely conditions. Still waiting for the sun!

Maggie was joined by Baloo, Benny, Dougie and Tara for their walk in Geltsdale. With the weather clear the intention was to go up Cold Fell, however, the wind was so strong on Talkin Fell that we decided it was probably best not to go any higher. Still, a big attraction of the area is that there are numerous different routes for differing conditions.

Back to one of my favourite shorter rounds today for Maggie, Indy, Halle, Ernie and Murphy. Parking in front of Barrow, we headed round to the ridge route that leads directly to the top, a lovely walk. Then over onto Outerside, before dropping down then up onto Scar Crags and Causey Pike. Rained most of the day but the cloud level was quite high so we enjoyed the glorious views on offer. Then a quick pint to finish off.
