Unlike humans, horses don’t have collarbones. Their shoulders are held to the rest of their skeleton via a sling of muscles and ligaments instead, often referred to as the “thoracic sling.”

Why is this important? We often ask our equine athletes to perform complex movements that require tremendous strength and coordination, and horses carry the majority of their weight in their front end. Therefore, it is imperative that the bulk of the muscles that support the front end are kept healthy and conditioned, and the horse is trained to use their “motor” — that is, engaging the large hind end muscles as much as possible to avoid excessive weight bearing on the front end.

If the front end of the horse is consistently overweighted or not at an appropriate level of fitness, repetitive biomechanical stresses get transferred down the leg to the smaller ligaments and tendons that were not designed to bear this weight, which can then lead to injury.

It was a very well attended (sold out) Veterinary Sports Horse Congress RAI Amsterdam. Really interesting topics were presented and everything performance-related was covered in detail.

I have gained valuable insights into maximising performance by preventing injury, appropriate treatments and the importance of good rehabilitation. I'm excited to continue to apply the best quality evidence-based medicine to my orthopaedic patients moving forward through 2025.

For all my clients I will be back to work end of next week. I appreciate all of your patience whilst I have been away. If you are still awaiting replies to messages please get in touch again as they may have been missed.

If you are having any lameness or performance related issues please contact me.

For everyone that has contacted me concerned about the transmissibility of Equine Herpes due to the EHV neurological case in Ceredigion I’d point you towards the HBLB Code of Practice for further information.

https://codes.hblb.org.uk/index.php/page/73

EHV-1 is primarily a respiratory disease so transferred in coughs and sneezes, as well as on infected fomites. EHV does not travel long distances (greater than 50 metres) as an aerosol so close contact between horses should be minimised.

General common sense, good hygiene and biosecurity should prevent the spread.
Do not share equipment, tack, haynets etc.
If your horse is presenting with any respiratory symptoms keep them isolated and do not travel them.

Any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

❗ A case of EHV-1 neurological disease in a 13-year-old Warmblood mare on a premises in Ceredigion, Wales, has been reported to the ICC.

🔎 The mare presented with a stiff gait and difficulty urinating, quickly progressing to ataxia and recumbency. The case was euthanased on humane grounds.

🔹There are nine direct and around 20 in-direct in contacts, of mixed vaccination status. The premises is under voluntary movement restrictions, biosecurity measures are in place and additional testing of the population will be conducted to aid in optimising control measures and to inform when restrictions can be lifted.

🔹Positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab and blood.

Information for all clients!
From 1st January 2024 vaccination rules for Equine Influenza (flu) have changed for many of the equestrian disciplines in accordance with advice from British Equestrian (BEF).

Vaccination intervals after 1st January 2024 have reduced date ranges between the first two vaccinations in a primary course and the first booster. Any horse restarting their vaccinations or commencing a new primary course with effect from 1st January 2024 will be affected by the changes. Vaccinations that are up-to-date and correct will not be affected.

Competition horse owners should ensure that their horse or pony is vaccinated for Equine Flu in accordance with the rules of the appropriate sporting governing bodies under which they are competing (e.g. BHA, FEI, British Eventing, British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Pony Club, British Riding Clubs, etc)
* Please note: VACCINATION RULES DIFFER BETWEEN ORGANISATIONS. It is your responsibility to ensure that your horse or pony’s vaccinations are up to date and comply with requirements. Any lapse in the vaccination history, even by a few days, will be considered by the relevant governing body to be a breach of its rules and may result in your horse being unable to compete or penalties being imposed.
