Information for all clients!
From 1st January 2024 vaccination rules for Equine Influenza (flu) have changed for many of the equestrian disciplines in accordance with advice from British Equestrian (BEF).

Vaccination intervals after 1st January 2024 have reduced date ranges between the first two vaccinations in a primary course and the first booster. Any horse restarting their vaccinations or commencing a new primary course with effect from 1st January 2024 will be affected by the changes. Vaccinations that are up-to-date and correct will not be affected.

Competition horse owners should ensure that their horse or pony is vaccinated for Equine Flu in accordance with the rules of the appropriate sporting governing bodies under which they are competing (e.g. BHA, FEI, British Eventing, British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Pony Club, British Riding Clubs, etc)
* Please note: VACCINATION RULES DIFFER BETWEEN ORGANISATIONS. It is your responsibility to ensure that your horse or pony’s vaccinations are up to date and comply with requirements. Any lapse in the vaccination history, even by a few days, will be considered by the relevant governing body to be a breach of its rules and may result in your horse being unable to compete or penalties being imposed.

A nice reminder today that not all my work is lameness, surgery and pre-purchase examinations. I also carry out routine as well as more advanced dentistry. This was an older horse that had recently started to struggle eating hay and was quidding. A dental speculum examination under sedation identified the two teeth that needed removing. The teeth were palpably loose with the food packing up in between them towards the roots. If you require routine dentistry for your horse or if they are having dental problems then do not hesitate to get in touch.

Wishing all our clients, friends and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thank you all for your continued trust in looking after your horses. It has been a pleasure to treat so many lovely horses, to keep them healthy and sound so they can continue to love what they do.

2022 has brought about the completion of clinic facilities for standing surgeries, in-house blood testing as well as investment in surgical equipment such as a surgical LASER.

Enjoy the festivities and rest assured if you need anything over the festive period I am available. Otherwise we look forward to seeing you again in 2023.

For everyone that has been trying to contact me in the past week please bear with me.

Due to a bout of illness I have been forced to take this week off to recover. As well as not seeing any horses this week, the admin side of things has also come to an abrupt halt. I have been inundated with messages, phone calls and emails and will get back to each and every message individually over this weekend and will try to fit in as much as I can in the next two weeks to catch up.
I hope to be up-to-date with messages by Monday but if I haven’t replied to you please send me a quick reminder.

Thank you for your patience

I am excited to announce that I am now running equine blood samples in-house. The tests available include routine haematology (white and red cell counts), full biochemistry (electrolytes, kidney function, liver function, muscle enzymes and protein) and serum amyloid A (an acute inflammatory marker) analysis.
The availability to run bloods in-house and not having to rely on the postal service and worrying about not getting results over a weekend are already proving a huge benefit to case management.

I am frequently asked to evaluate horses that are performing poorly, or have subtle hindlimb lameness. Most commonly this seems to be pain originating from the hock joint.

The hock is a large, complex joint which receives a huge amount of the load during motion, providing propulsion along with the stifle, regardless of discipline. The hock consists of six bones and four joints. Additionally, if a horse has sore hocks, over time, the horse will start to compensate through other structures.

Clinical signs of hock pain include intermittent lameness, reduced performance, lack of propulsion, being on the forehand, hindquarter tension that improves with work, behavioral/training problems and lower back pain.

There are different causes of hock lameness, but the most common disorder is distal tarsal joint pain or “bone spavin”. The lower (distal) two joints (D & E) can develop inflammation, with varying degrees of joint degeneration. The lower two joints do not contribute to much motion compared to the large (upper) hock joint (B), but they can be a significant source of pain when inflamed.

These radiographs are from three different horses, all diagnosed with ‘bone spavin’. They have different levels of lameness and varying degrees of radiographic changes. Illustrating the severity of lameness does not always correlate with radiographic severity. Most important to me, is clinical soundness and response to treatment but radiographic appearance is useful as a prognostic indicator or if the horse does not respond as well as anticipated to medical treatment.

Hock pain doesn’t have to limit your horses performance nor should it be career ending.

If you think your horse may be showing signs of subtle lameness or is not performing to its best please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you to for our custom made drawers for the transporter. The service was brilliant and the product is excellent quality. At 1.8m long they are the biggest they’ve made but it’s enabled me to be much more organised and efficient.
