Equine Influenza vaccine intervals and reminders.

As of January 2023 some, not all, competition regulatory bodies changed their primary course intervals. Previously all primary course intervals were 21-92 days between the 1st & 2nd vaccine and 150-215 days between the 2nd and 3rd vaccine. The new intervals ( like I said, for some not all ) are 21-60 days between the 1st & 2nd and 120-180 days between the 2nd & 3rd.

As we cannot know what everyone does with their horses, in order for us to continue to send vaccine reminders that incorporates both regimes, you will receive a reminder for your 3rd vaccines at an interval of 150 - 180 days.

The second vaccine reminder is sent with an interval of 4-6 weeks - this is because a majority of you will be having the Flu & Tetanus combined (Tetanus primary course is 4-6 weeks).

I would, however, urge you all to make yourselves familiar with what your competition regulatory body's requirements are for vaccines especially 6 monthly boosters. We do not send out reminders for 6 monthly boosters.

If you do not currently receive reminders from us we can only send out reminders if we have a current mobile number or email address. Please ensure these details are correct on our system.

Whilst we offer this service as a courtesy occasionally errors do occur. Please check your passports when you receive a reminder as we will not be held responsible for bookings made outside of the interval dates.

We have been made aware of an article published in horse and hound which states we are part of South Wales Equine. We would like to assure our clients that we are 100% independent and will continue as we always have to put you and your horses first. As a wholly independent practice we do not need to inflate our prices to make money for shareholders. Love Lisa and Phil x

Re: Firebreak Lockdown in Wales

It goes without saying that we are always available for your horses, ponies and donkey in all cases of emergency and urgent work, however, in support of the Welsh Government efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19 we would ask that you consider postponing any routine calls for the duration of the next fortnight. If you have any concerns or queries please give the clinic a call and we will discuss each case individually with you.

Please do not use Facebook messenger or commenting as our staff will be limited, telephone or emails only please.

Thank you in advance All at Dyffryn Tywi

COVID-19 update Castrations
To clarify the situation re castrations. We are now, on the basis of risk assessment of individual cases, able to castrate c**ts who are becoming difficult to manage, may cause an unwanted pregnancy or are becoming a risk to themselves or others.
Please ring the clinic to discuss your case with us.

COVID-19 UPDATE
This notification is for anybody who has had their Flu vaccines lapse due to the Corona virus and will have to start the course again.
We have spoken with our vaccine company and they will be conducting an amnesty to help these people out with their re-starts.
They will fund the cost of either a first or second Flu vaccine of those who lapsed between the dates of 6/3/20 & 17/5/20. The cost of the visit will still apply and we will not be able to start the re-starts until after lock down has lifted.

Keep safe all.

COVID-19 UPDATE

After an online discussion with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) last week we would like to try to clarify what we are currently able to offer in terms of routine work.

Please be assured that we are always available as always for all emergency and urgent cases.

We are in a crisis situation with many people losing their lives so in the context of routine work we would ask that any case that can be put on hold for two months is delayed for that time. If it is not possible to delay for two months please could you ring the clinic and we will make a risk assessment for your individual case.

Please be assured that we are striving to the best of our ability to uphold our social responsibility and respect regulations while ensuring that equine welfare is maintained at all times and offer as complete a service as we safely can.

Specifically we need to maintain social distancing while examining horses. If this is not possible we will endeavour to attend with 2 members of staff.

Vaccinations – If your vaccinations can wait please do so. If not please ring the clinic so that we can do a risk assessment on an individual case basis.
Castrations – Please ring the clinic so we can determine the urgency and make a risk assessment on an individual basis.
General reproduction work – While we wish to provide as full a service as possible, again each individual case will have to be risk assessed.
Pregnancy scans will be performed, if social distancing can be maintained, to avoid potential welfare issues due to twinning. It is harder to justify routine scanning but might be possible if strict social distancing can be maintained.

Below is a copy of our guidelines as given by BEVA and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

We hope you all keep well.

COVID-19 UPDATE

We hope everyone is keeping safe and well. There has been further clarification regarding vaccinations as follows:

The British Equestrian Federation, in conjunction with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and the British Horseracing Association (BHA), has approved a proposal regarding the vaccination schedule for equine influenza in competition horses competing under its member bodies. The move has been made in order to help riders, owners and vets tackle the significant logistical challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and provide clarity for all.

All competitive disciplines under the BEF umbrella currently operate a requirement for an annual booster every 12 months after an initial course of two injections and the first booster injection. This will remain the case throughout 2020, which means that any horse who goes beyond their annual renewal date will be required to start again. The initial vaccination intervals for primary and booster vaccinations will also remain in place as normal.

Those member bodies who have rules in place for six monthly booster injections before competing will look implement a transition period to allow riders to bring vaccinations up to date, once the current suspension of activity is lifted. This will be communicated to the members of each governing body in due course, when it becomes clearer when competition activity is able to resume.

The BHA has moved to a 12 month booster vaccination requirement, from their policy of nine months, to cover horses racing in the United Kingdom for the remainder of 2020.

Interim BEF Chief Executive Iain Graham commented; “The length of the coronavirus pandemic is unknown but we wanted to provide those who compete with our Member Bodies some clarity on our current position. Equine vets are under strict guidance to carry out emergency work only at present – and as booster vaccinations are classified as routine injections, they will not be carried out.

We appreciate that some horse owners will fall outside the required 12 month period and will therefore need to start again, which is unfortunate. However, we cannot allow vaccinations to go beyond 12 months as the efficacy of the vaccine cannot be guaranteed beyond that date.

Each member body will be outline their six month booster requirements individually ahead of competition restarting. I’d like to thank our colleagues in BEVA and BHA for their collaboration on this so that much of the equine industry is aligned.”
