📍 Real-Life Location Day: Sniffer Club at The Church at Parc Dewi Sant! 🐾👃

Yesterday, our Sniffer Club had an incredible Real-Life Location Day at the stunning church at Parc Dewi Sant, and what an amazing venue it was! From grand architecture to unique search challenges, our dogs had the opportunity to work in a truly special environment, navigating new scents, surfaces, and hiding spots.

A huge thank you to Old Theatre Cafe for not only giving us access but also opening up especially for our sniffer teams. After a rewarding session, handlers enjoyed a well-earned cup of coffee and some delicious human treats—because it’s not just the dogs who deserve rewards!

We’ve captured some fantastic moments from inside the beautiful church, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Keep an eye out for the photos—this venue was truly something special!

Frosty Mornings & Fit Dogs! ❄️🐕

What a fantastic UK Dog Sport class this morning! The crisp, frosty conditions gave us a great opportunity to work our dogs in different weather.

We were also joined by the brilliant Susanne Hale from barkingneeds.caninemassage, who gave our sports dog teams a clinical massage talk and muscular health checks. She shared some really useful tips, and the dogs absolutely loved her! Keeping our dogs in top condition is just as important as their training, and Susanne’s expertise gave us all a better understanding of how to support our dogs’ wellbeing.

Huge thank you to Susanne for joining us today – we hope to have her back again in the future!

🌦 How Weather Affects Tracking 🌦

Did you know that weather plays a huge role in how well your dog can track? Different conditions change how scent moves and settles, making some days easier—and others more challenging!

🔹 Wet & damp ground 💦 holds scent better, making it easier for dogs to follow.
🔹 Hot, dry conditions ☀️ can cause scent to fade quickly, making tracking harder.
🔹 Windy days 💨 moves scent, meaning dogs may need to work harder to stay on track.
🔹 Frost & snow ❄️ can trap scent, making it trickier for some dogs to detect.

Tracking dogs learn to work with the environment, adjusting their search to the conditions. That’s why regular practice in all weather is key!

Training Tips Tuesday: Generalising Behaviours for Real-Life and Dog Sport Success 🐾

Does your dog sit perfectly in your living room but seem to “forget” how to behave at the park? It’s not stubbornness—it’s simply that they haven’t yet learned to generalise their behaviours.

🔑 What is Generalisation?
Generalisation means teaching your dog to perform a behaviour in various environments and around different distractions. It’s how we move from “my dog only listens at home” to “my dog listens anywhere!”

🎯 How to Generalise a Behaviour:
1️⃣ Change Locations: Start practising behaviours in different rooms, then move to your garden, a quiet park, or even a busy street.
2️⃣ Add Distractions Gradually: Begin with minimal distractions and slowly increase them. For example, start with a toy nearby, then progress to training near other dogs.
3️⃣ Vary Your Position: Teach your dog to respond when you’re sitting, standing, or even moving.
4️⃣ Reward Variably: Once your dog has mastered the cue, reward variably, so your dog never knows when the reward is coming to keep the anticipation high.
5️⃣ Use Real-Life Scenarios: Practise in situations where the behaviours will be needed.

You’ve heard us rave about scent work all week—and for good reason! It’s an incredible way to engage your dog’s natural talents while building a stronger bond. But did you know that scent work isn’t just for specialist training? It’s also a fantastic tool for everyday life, which is why we’ve added it to our Beyond Basics: Skills and Thrills course.

In this 6-week course, starting Saturday, 11th January at Carmarthen Showground, we’ll teach your dog essential life skills they’ll need to thrive in the real world. Whether it’s learning to listen around distractions, improving their focus, or building confidence, this class is packed with fun, practical training. And yes, we’ve included some exciting scent games too! 🎯

Why scent games?
• They tap into your dog’s natural instincts.
• They provide mental stimulation and boost confidence.
• They’re a great way to relax, have fun, and bond with your dog!

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Building a Strong Bond from Day One 🐾 With a new puppy, every interaction is an opportunity to build trust and connection. Our top tip this week: keep training sessions short and sweet! Puppies have limited attention spans, so aim for a few minutes at a time, filled with positive reinforcement and lots of praise. End on a high note, so your pup is excited to try again next time. 🎉 Remember, consistency is key! Practising a few times a day will help those new skills stick.
