Ever wondered what the recovery from a general anaesthetic looks like for your pet? 🤔

Well, we had lovely Bonnie in today for a dental procedure and she received 5 star cuddles from our receptionist Sam, who sat with her whilst she recovered from her anaesthetic…. Isn’t she adorable?! 😍

A MASSIVE Thank you to all our clients who've brought us cards, chocolates, biscuits, fruit, a book, cake and lots of fresh fruit. You are all so very kind and we are very very grateful and I apologise if we haven't had a chance to thank you in person, we have been particularly busy the last few weeks, which meant we are even more grateful for the extra sustenance.
It is so very very nice to be appreciated.
(ps if your gift is not there we've already eaten it!)🤣

This is the gorgeous Rolo, a 12 week old cocker puppy, who was brought in to us out of hours acutely vomiting. An X-ray and palpating of his tummy soon showed that he had swallowed a foreign body which was causing a blockage. The object can be seen at the bottom of the X-ray as a circular white shadow with a slightly black rim. This does demonstrate how some foreign bodies can be very hard to spot if they are not stone or metal. Rolo went to surgery and a rubber k**b from a puppy teething ring was removed. We are very pleased to report he is back home with his family and eating and drinking well. 💕

Dogs A**l glands
“Emptying a**l glands” one of Becky's favourite nursing jobs!
It’s a smelly job but emptying a dog’s a**l glands that are really full provides them with immediate relief from what can be a very painful condition.
Signs of a**l glands being full:
• Scooting (the dog rubbing its bum along a carpet)
• A fishy or odd smell from your dog’s back end
• A reluctance to jump up onto things
• Looking back at their back end, chasing their tail or even biting the back end and licking their bum

This is the gorgeous Siano, he had to be rushed to us recently out of hours after eating a large treat which got stuck in his oesophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. You can see it in the first X-ray sitting directly above the heart. The second X-ray shows the normal chest after the foreign body was removed. You can see the offending treat in the picture. We are pleased to say Siano is back home with his mum and should make a full recovery. We all love giving our pets treats but always make sure they are small enough not to get stuck as some dogs, and cats, will gulp them down with no thoughts about chewing.

Frostbite - take care of your dog's paws please
I was out on the fell today all dressed up in warm layers, the snow and ice were beautiful to see but hard to negotiate. I appreciated my waterproof, dry socks and goretex shoes. How would it feel to run barefoot in these conditions all day? Not very nice I think. I was shocked to see people on the fells with their dogs in these conditions. I know your dog isn't complaining and is happily wagging his tail but while their feet are immersed in snow they are probably numb and not painful but after a few hours they are vulnerable to frostbite just like us. Please take care of your four-legged friends - no they don't complain - how could they?

What is frostbite?
It’s caused by a simple restriction of the blood vessels in the extremities in cold temperatures. You may have experienced this yourself in cold fingers or toes. Your dog is likely to feel that type of cold at the tips of the ears, the paws and the tail. Instead of having normal blood flow circulating throughout your dog’s body, the blood flow circulates primarily around the core to keep core body temperature warmer leaving the extremities vulnerable.
Symptoms - initially it is painful, the skin may change colour (pale, blue, grey) but this might be hard to see in black pigmented skin until there are swellings, blisters or cracked, red and inflamed skin.
Small breeds, puppies, older dogs and short-haired dogs are at greater risk.
Please look after your pets and consider their needs.

For the keen runners out there.....
What you up to on Saturday 1st October - 3pm - 6pm?
How about joining Sabrina Verjee for a run, a screening of her film, All For One by Steve Ashworth Media, and a Q&A hosted by Bad Boy Running’s Allie Bailey.
👟👟What is happening on the day👟👟
Fresh from setting a new women's record at Italy's Tor des Géants – one of the world's most renowned ultrarunning races – Sabrina is celebrating the timely release of her book, Where There's a Hill, which gives a fascinating insight into the determination it takes to become one of the world's greatest ultrarunners and the story behind her attempts on the Wainwrights record.
Meeting at Sticklebarn, the event will begin with a short run, led by Sabrina from the Great Langdale Bunkhouse (situated just behind Sticklebarn) and then a return to Sticklebarn for a film screening of Steve Ashworth's All for One about Sabrina's journey to become the first person to complete the Wainwrights Round in under six days, followed by a Q&A with Sabrina, presented by Allie Bailey, curator and host of the Ultra Zone at the National Running Show and co-host of the Bad Boy Running Podcast.

Tumour in the Spleen.
This is Lucinda our 12 year old cat recovering after an operation where I removed her spleen.
Lucinda has been a very healthy cat. The only previous thing that has happened is she had an overactive thyroid back in March 2020. After stabilising her with medication to reduce the thyroid activity I then removed the problematic thyroid gland. Since then she had been living a normal life and not on any medication. She has been perfectly fine but over the last 2 months I thought I could see her subtly changing shape week by week. At first I wasn't sure if she was losing a bit of muscle and getting a flabby belly in her older age. However, being a vet I palpated her abdomen and became suspicious of something abnormal in there. Two weeks ago I could feel for certain that it was her spleen enlarging and knew although she was fine in herself that I ought to investigate it. I did an ultrasound scan of her abdomen and sure enough her spleen was massive - about 4 times the size it should have been! Luckily, all her other organs seemed to be okay. So we went straight to surgery and I removed the huge, abnormal spleen, which I suspected was heavily infiltrated with cancer. Lucinda made a very speedy recovery from surgery. The photo shows her on our bed at home only a few hours after surgery! Cats are amazing. Today I received the histology report from the tissue samples I had sent to the lab to find out what kind of tumour it was. A diffuse splenic mast cell tumour. The best and only known useful treatment for this condition is a splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen) and the prognosis is favourable. So Lucinda should be able to continue her normal life with no further treatment required - yipee! The spleen is an organ found on the left side of the abdomen - it's normal role is to make white blood cells, filter the blood, store red blood cells and remove old red blood cells from circulation. Animals and people can manage very well without their spleens but are at slightly increased risk of of infection.
Cats are very independent animals unlike dogs and it's not always possible to know that something is wrong with them until it is too late. Had we left her spleen in place until Lucinda showed signs of being unwell it would have been too late. It is very important to have your cat examined at least once a year (ideally every 6 months) by a vet if you want to be able to pick up things early so that there are treatment options. We offer a pet health plan for cats for £10 per month and this includes their annual vaccine and health check with the vet, another 6 month health check with the vet and regular, effective flea, tick and worming treatment. We are the only gold status cat friendly clinic in Lancashire.

This warm weather is bringing these beautiful snakes out so take care with your dogs while out and about. If you make plenty of noise the snakes should hear you coming and they will slither off out of your way but make sure your dogs don’t chase them as a bite is venomous (this one is an adder). Anti- venom is in short supply in the uk but hopefully more stock on the way!

Steff, Veterinary Surgeon says -

‘I've been working in companion animal practice in the North West since I qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2014. I enjoy the great variety of general practice but I am particularly interested in medical conditions such as diabetes and epilepsy. I am currently working towards completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Small Animal Medicine.

In my spare time I love getting out and about in the countryside either on foot or by bike. Most of the time I am accompanied by my rescue terrier Harry and we love nothing more than stopping at a tea shop for cake after a day on the hills.
I am really looking forward to getting to know you and your wonderful pets here at Carnforth Pet Care. ‘

Sabrina, Lead Veterinary Surgeon and Practice owners says…..

"I am passionate about providing the highest level of care to all pets at any time of day and providing 24 hour on site care to our inpatients. I believe that no pet should be left unattended when they are unwell; they should be regularly assessed by the vet through the night and given appropriate treatment and care all night. This is why I set up Carnforth Pet Care so that all pets had access to this service.

I qualified from Cambridge University in 2009 and advanced my veterinary career in Emergency Medicine and Surgery with my European postgraduate certificate. I have had 8 years experience working in very busy emergency hospitals so I am the right person to come to if your dog has a GDV (twisted stomach), your bitch needs a caesarean section, you think your cat has been poisoned or any other emergency. I have 3 fabulous felines that I rescued – Lucinda the quiet moggy, Minnie the playful Bengal cross and her mother Totty who is fondly known as “Happy Cat” – she will greet anyone and loves attention. On the odd occasion when I am not working you might see me out running. I particularly enjoy ultra running and recently won the Lakeland 100."

Did you know that dogs can only sweat from the pads on their paws 🐾
That’s quite a small surface area to try and lose heat from compared to us! Dogs also try to cool down by panting - this is why they pant when they’re hot.
These are their only cooling methods and as they’re covered in warm fur they can overheat very quickly in this hot weather.
Take care and don’t exercise them in the heat ☀️
