Dear members,
We are experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis following from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with currently more than 6 million people displaced within the country and more than 2 million who are already seeking refuge in other countries. This is forcing families to split or humans to have to decide whether to find refuge or stay with their pets. It is also leaving many orphan pets in need of homes.
9 Lives Scotland cannot look the other way and we want to use our knowledge, experience, and community support to help as much as we can. We feel it is our responsibility to provide options for pets, and their humans, to have the dignified new lives (even if temporary) that every person and animal fleeing war and conflict deserves.
We know that many of our community will not be able to stand to one side and watch this situation unfold. Many families and individuals are unable to take refuge because they would have to leave their pets behind, and many others have already been forced to do so. For many people, who may have lost their families or been forced to separate from them as a result of war, their pets may be one of the few intimate connections they have left.
As many of you know, the UK government recently has declared a scheme to allow people residing in the UK to open their homes to Ukrainian refugees. The new scheme, as much as it is welcome, does not provide a system for identifying Ukrainian refugees in need, or provide support for pets to bring their humans. Humans are currently unable to fly with pets, and there are currently different restrictions and costs involved in pets travelling to have a chance at a new home and new lives than there are for their humans. We want to open a scheme to match pets, or pets and their humans to new homes in Scotland & the UK. If you would be willing to adopt or foster a pet that cannot stay with their human or currently has no home, or to give refuge to a pet and their human so that they do not have to split their family unit, please contact us through the 9 Lives Scotland Page or by phone/message. We will collect this information as we look into the logistics of how to properly identify where the need is more urgent and work out what support we need to provide to make sure that pets and their humans can come to Scotland & the UK, if that is where they want to seek refuge.
Please share this post as widely as possible so we can make sure it reaches those who need it the most.
As always, thanks for helping us help them!
