It's getting cold out and you've decided to crank up the central heating. But little do you know, you've just unleashed a potential flea invasion in your cosy home. 🏠😱 Heat from your heating system provides the ideal environment for those sneaky flea eggs to hatch. And that's not all! Vibrations caused by passing pets or even people can act as a wake-up call for these pesky critters. Talk about a perfect storm for flea infestations!
We've got some tips to help you outsmart these cunning parasites. ❌🔒
1️⃣ Regularly vacuum your carpets, furniture, and pet bedding to remove any potential flea hideouts.
2️⃣ Keep your furry pals protected with vet-recommended flea preventatives (included in Pet Health Club)
3️⃣ If you suspect a flea invasion, consult professionals for effective treatment options. Don't let them take over your cozy abode! 💪
Remember, prevention is key to keeping these unwanted guests at bay. Join our Pet Health Club to get year-round protection from pesky parasites.

🎄 How to have a Pet Friendly Christmas 🎄

❄️Be careful of salt and grit from the roads. Wash your dog’s paws thoroughly after a winter walk – paying close attention between their toes.

💦Water bottles can freeze overnight in extremely cold temperatures! You can make sure your rabbits, guinea pigs or other small pets aren’t stuck with a block of ice where their water once was by wrapping it up in bubble wrap.

⚖️Watch their weight
Your pets probably aren’t doing as much exercise as they were over the warmer months. This means they won’t be using as much energy and will not need to eat as much food.

🎀Put up your decorations slowly and carefully
When readying the house for Christmas, try putting up your decorations slowly and over the period of a few days if you can. A sudden change in your pet’s environment can be quite stressful for them; they’d much prefer a slow, steady Christmas transformation.

🌲Is your tree a real one?
Needles from Christmas trees can harm your dog or cat’s paws. If your Christmas tree is a real one, take care to vacuum the surrounding area regularly.

👀Supervision at all times
A good habit to get in to during the run-up to Christmas is to keep an eye on your pet at all times; never leave them alone with the tree, decorations they can swallow or Christmas treats that could poison them.

❌Dangerous Christmas foods and plants
Chocolate, alcohol, mince pies, Christmas cake/pudding, cooked bones, xylitol, corn on the cob, garlic and fatty foods are all toxic to dogs and cats. And it’s not just about food. Several Christmassy plants, such as holly, ivy, poinsettia and mistletoe, are all toxic to pets so take extra care if you have any of them in your vicinity.

🎁Give your pet a gift
It’s a saying as old as time that ‘Pets are like children,’ or ‘Pets are family’…and it’s true! So don’t get your pet a present because it will distract them and keep them occupied over Christmas, get them a present because you love them!

🎊Be aware of your noise
Loud noises such as Christmas crackers and bursts of laughter can be stressful for your pets.

💤 Alone time
Set up a safe zone that your pet can go to for some alone time. This is great if you’re having lots of guests over.

🍪Take care while leaving out treats
If you’re leaving a special treat for Santa, make sure your pet can’t snaffle it when your back is turned!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Are your friends and family pet-savvy?
Check with your host before bringing your pet to their house. They might have completely different ideas to you about animals in their home and may leave out foods which could be harmful!

🚗Prepare for the journey
If you’re embarking on a long drive, make sure you bring plenty of toys to keep your pet occupied. Stop every so often and let them out to stretch their legs and go to the toilet.

💉Is your pet ready?
Are their vaccinations up to date? Have they had their flea and worm treatment? Plan these things well in advance of Christmas.

🐾Know your pet
Cowering, shivering, growling, barking/meowing more than usual and refusing food can all be signs of stress.

Consider calming products
If the Christmas period is too much for your pet, think about getting a pheromone spray or diffuser. These can be really helpful for particularly nervous or anxious pets.

Brushing your cat's teeth can be quite tricky, as some cats may not allow you near their mouth. If possible, you should follow our simple 3 step guide.

Step 1: Use your finger to brush the side of your cat’s face, next to their mouth. Once your cat gets used to that feeling, progress to rubbing their actual teeth using your finger. Then you can introduce a small amount of animal toothpaste to your finger, gently rubbing it along the teeth.

Step 2: Now that your cat is used to having his teeth touched, introduce an actual toothbrush. You can get ones designed specifically for animal use to make things easier for you and your cat.

Step 3: Eventually, you should aim to spend around 2 minutes brushing all the surfaces in your cat’s mouth. Don’t worry if your cat doesn’t take to toothbrushing straight away; the more gradual the process, the easier it will be.

🐕Preparing your dog:
💥Use sound therapy to desensitise your dog to firework noises : The idea behind this is that if your dog can get used to loud noises, they won’t be as frightened of them. This can take a while to achieve so it’s well worth starting a month or so in advance of firework season. Play firework sounds at home, quietly at first and gradually increase the volume over time.

🚶‍♀️Walk your dog well before dark, and keep them at home during the night.

🏠Make your pet a safe and cosy hideout - Every dog should have a safe zone. A place to go that is theirs and theirs alone, where they know nobody will intrude or disturb them.
Stay home with your dog, but try not to smother them - Your pet might be stressed and confused by the fireworks so it’s best to let them come to you. You don’t want them to feel suffocated or claustrophobic. If your pet is calm and settled whilst fireworks are going off, be sure to praise them.

✍️Make sure your dog's microchip details are up to date
🎼Distract your dog using loud TV or music, plus fun treats and games

In extreme cases, use a calming product such as Vetpro: Stress & Anxiety

😺Preparing your cat:

Keep your cat company during firework season - Your presence at home will help your cat feel a lot safer during this loud season.
🏠Make sure your cat stays inside at night - To prevent your cat coming across any dangerous fireworks, keep them indoors during the night.
Provide your cat with a comfortable hideout - Your cat will feel safer if they have somewhere comfy to hide. You could use their carrier, or even an old cardboard box lined with warm blankets.

😗Act calm around your cat and try not to smother them - If you’re flustered by the firework noises, your cat will sense it and it’ll add to their fear. If you remain nice and calm, you’ll act as a calming presence for your cat - which is a great help to them.

🎼Use music, TV, treats, toys and enrichment games to distract your cat

In extreme cases, use a calming product like Vetpro: Stress & Anxiety

Carterton Veterinary Surgery joins everyone in the UK in mourning the loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. She will be remembered for her lifetime of dedicated public service and is well known for her love of animals. As a steadfast supporter of the veterinary profession, she was the loyal Patron and benefactor of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons since 1952 and gave her royal assent to an array of animal-related protection legislations, as well as longstanding support and patronage to a wide range of animal charities and organisations.

We thank her for her extraordinary decades of service and all that she achieved for her nation and the world and extend our condolences to the Royal Family.

Our practice will be closed for all but urgent treatments and emergencies, and continued care of inpatients on Monday 19th September

Our Story

Our Story started many moons ago. ‘Where we are’ now and what we would like to offer our clients and ourselves has grown out of all of our life experiences and decisions.

We all, as individuals want to provide our clients and their pets with a kind, caring, compassionate experience working within a collective team environment which we find stimulating and compassionate. We aim to be kind to each other so we can be kinder to you.

We all learn from our life experiences both with people and with pets and we actively seek to work with and grow the good experiences whilst being very mindful of the not so good ones.

In short, as a team we are proud to work together to provide you with the service we ourselves would wish to receive for our pets and for ourselves.
