Following on from yesterday's story.
Walking is often underestimated in horse training, however it has numerous benefits to both horse! Here are a few key advantages:
Flexibility: Each step in walk allows for greater lateral flexion, longitudinal flexion and axial rotation of the spine, this motion helps keep the spine supple improving the horses ability to bend and move freely in more demanding gaits and movements.
Joint Health: Since there’s no suspension phase in walking, it’s easier on the joints, making it ideal for older horses or those recovering from injuries.
Muscle Development: Walking requires muscles to work harder compared to faster gaits, which helps in building core strength. Walking on varied terrain engages a wide range of muscles it is an effective way to strengthen muscles without the risk of injury from high impact activities.
Nervous System Training: It provides more time for the horse to coordinate movements, making it easier to learn and correct new skills. This gait also helps horses relax and unwind.
Endurance and Stamina: Long walks, especially on varied terrain, are excellent for building endurance and overall fitness.
Incorporating more walking into your training routine can be incredibly beneficial for your horse’s overall health and performance and should always be included as part of their warm up and cool down.
