Earlier this week, Blue enjoyed a well-deserved massage to prepare for the London International Horse Show next week. Blue and Fiona will be competing in the Shetland Pony Grand National, having worked tirelessly to earn their place while raising funds for The Bob Champion Cancer Trust.
If you're going along, make sure you give them a cheer!

Good Luck!

Horses are often labelled as "naughty" when they exhibit behaviors like bucking, rearing, biting, or refusing commands. However, these behaviours are not signs of a horse being "bad" or rebellious—they are almost always expressions of frustration, discomfort, or pain. Horses are prey animals with a strong survival instinct, and they rely heavily on body language to communicate their feelings and needs. When a horse behaves in a way that seems challenging, it’s usually because they're trying to convey that something is wrong.

For instance, if a horse bucks when ridden, it might be due to poorly fitting tack, back pain, soreness, or even an undiagnosed health issue. Similarly, behaviours like biting or kicking can stem from anxiety or a response to being mishandled or misunderstood. Horses lack the language to express their discomfort directly, so they communicate in the only way they know how—through behaviour.

Understanding these signs as signals rather than "naughtiness" is crucial for any horse handler. By observing and addressing the root causes, we can improve the horse’s welfare and create a more trusting, cooperative relationship.
