Two weeks ago we shared the *Christmas* Amazon WISH LIST with Christmassy treats & dinners.
So far, not one single gift has arrived 😒
Hunter doesn't mind.
He knows that money is tight at this time of the year and that everyone is busy but, he did ask if we'd mind sharing the Christmas WISH LIST just one more time in case anyone would like to buy something πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸŽ„πŸŽ…

When you buy a gift through the WISH LIST it gets sent straight here and there is no need for you to send it on.

Thank you.

Peter & Hunter received some lovely treats today from their Amazon WISH LIST.
Tripe & Rabbits ears from Meg.
A selection box & liver chunks from Mrs Vardon.
And a sack of food from Amy.
We also received some very kind donations via PayPal yesterday.

Thank you so much to everyone who supports us. These giant breeds are expensive to feed and, like we say all the time, we never want to feed them low quality food & treats with poor nutritional value. We like to keep them on a high quality diet with good quality, natural treats which we know makes it expensive if you want to buy them a gift so we really, truly do appreciate all of your support.

We still need more sacks of food this month if anyone can help.

I've thought long & hard about whether to share this post today and I've decided that I will share it.

Two years ago today, our Vet told us to kill Hunter.
It showed a complete lack of understanding regarding dogs & their behaviour and the reasons behind WHY dogs behave like this

She had met Hunter before when he went in for his neuter and, you may remember us telling you all at the time about the extreme fear that Hunter showed with the vet. He didn't want a stranger touching him and he showed that by growling, snapping and he most definitely would have bitten if he wasn't wearing a muzzle. I've worked with dogs for a long time and I've seen many dogs struggle at the vets but Hunter was on a whole 'nother level. This was made even worse obviously, due to his size and the risk of him causing harm was huge however, it was all fear based and lots of dogs display fear at the vets but never, ever show aggression in any other situations.
That's a perfectly normal behaviour.

So, my reason for deciding to share this is to educate & give hope to anyone in the same situation.
Firstly, you absolutely can ask for a second opinion or move to a new Vet if you feel it appropriate. Secondly, training & Behaviour Modification absolutely does work - find yourself a good Behaviourist and stick to the Training Plan. It won't happen over night but it most definitely CAN happen. And thirdly, and perhaps the most important is the power of time .... Give them time .... Slow down their world .... Stop doing too much too soon, lower your expectations....
I'm absolutely convinced that a huge amount of dogs struggle & lash out and get labelled as "aggressive" just because the owners continuously put the dogs in the wrong situations or the wrong environments or they expect too much from them .... Change what YOU do and your dog will change 😊

I'm glad we didn't listen to our vet 2 years ago but I wish that the whole thing hadn't happened and that vets listened to us, the owners, more.

Be your dogs advocate 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Dog Food appeal.

We hate asking again, especially so close to Christmas but it's that time of the month again when we are running low on dog food. The main biscuits are the most urgent but Peter is all out of his most favourite tripe and Hunter only has 3 rabbits ears left so they'd both love some treats if you were able to help.

Thank you so much

Our Sanctuary Dog, Hunter out with his Foster Mum πŸ’•

06/10/2024

Rescue Centres are really struggling at the moment.
Up & down the country. Every Rescue is the same - NO ONE IS ADOPTING BUT EVERYONE IS SURRENDERING.

It's absolutely heartbreaking out there at the moment. We're being asked to help around 6 dogs per day. We've got other Rescue Centres contacting us, asking us to take their Kangals & Anatolians because they've had them for over a year and no one wants them.
We've got Council Dog Pounds begging us to offer a space to their Kangals & Anatolians because the dogs are way over their legal time under Local Authority care and are at a high risk of being put to sleep.
We've got owners needing to sign over their Kangals & Anatolians because they can't care for them anymore.
It's just relentless & never ending at the moment.

We've been discussing the idea of no longer offering a Rescue Space to the "easy" dogs. It feels like our skills, our knowledge & our ability to rehabilitate is "wasted" when we have an easy dog under our care and it feels like a "normal" Rescue Centre could probably help those dogs and we'll only take the difficult ones .... The ones who need work .... The ones who have a colourful past & struggle to accept humans or other dogs.
These are the dogs that no other Rescue will offer a space on.
These are the dogs that will not make it out of the Council Pounds alive.... But these are the dogs that need us the most. They need our experience... Our knowledge... Our skills .... Our time.... They need us to rehabilitate them & to turn them around.

The trouble is, we have a dog like Peter who is easy. He's soppy & loving & a bit of a goofball. He doesn't really need any work .... And yet he's been with us for months!
If we can't even re-home these easy dogs then what hope do we have of rehoming the more challenging dogs, like Hunter?
Hunter was with us for over 2 years before we decided that he should remain with us forever as a Sanctuary Dog.

In a time where people are struggling to pay their heating bills .... Struggling to put food on their tables .... Having to downsize into smaller properties.... Having to be out of the house for longer hours as they need to work extra shifts .... At a time when the cost of living is just so difficult, it is undoubtedly, the dogs who miss out.
They can barely afford their own food so of course they can't afford the dog food. Or the Vet bills. Or the Dog Walker. Or the Dog Trainer.
So the dogs are surrendered to Rescue (if they're lucky!) or dumped / given away online and passed from pillar to post, causing all sorts of behaviour problems until, eventually no one can cope with the dog and they need the support of the breed-specific Rescue.... Who are unable to help because no one is adopting.
And so the cycle continues....

Peter, 2 yrs old, male Kangal.
In Foster in Kent. We re-home all over the UK provided you come to meet the dog.

Hunter-Lovin' πŸ’•πŸ’•

Hunter is our Sanctuary Dog.
He was with us for just over 2 years and although he found a couple of new homes in that time, none of them worked out (he really struggled in his early days and would use aggression whenever he was stressed)

He continues to be the most amazing boy and he is doing wonderfully.

Here he is, enjoying having "that" spot scratched 🀣🀣
