KARAS Sanctuary Dog, Hunter just loves the word "SNACKS!!!"

28/07/2024

Last week we asked for your help with some dog food. We only had two bags donated and we're still desperate so, we're pleading for dog food again, this week.
Please help if you can.

Here's last week's post:

APPEAL FOR DOG FOOD

Please can you help?
We're running low on sacks of dog food and could really use some donations this month.
We know the food on the Amazon WISH LIST is a bit pricey but we like to keep the dogs on a good quality food if we can. This means that many people cannot afford to donate a whole sack of food but if you could donate a few pounds, together it will all add up and we'll be able to buy some more supplies.

We're good for dog treats at the moment but desperate for their main food.

Our precious Parko 💕
Fell to sleep for the final time yesterday with his wonderful humans by his side.

Rehomed by KARAS around 6 years ago, Parko found the most amazing home and was truly loved by everyone who met him.

Thank you to his humans for adopting this beautiful boy and for giving him the best home he could have asked for.
We're all thinking of you and sending you our love.

Sleep tight, Parko 🌈🌈🌈🌈

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1996103254009898&type=3

Beautiful Parko arrived today.
Hes a big lad! Hes quite skinny and needs to put on some weight but he already weighs 58kg so he will be a big bo once he had filled out.

Parko has already been neutered & vaccinated and we'll get him flea & worm treated. He is also microchipped.

Parko came in as a stray and we dont have any history on him therefore we will not home him with young children.
Hes a wonderful, playful, happy boy and loves cuddles!
We will get him assessed over the coming weeks and update more as we get to know him.

Parko has had his ears cropped by a previous owner.

Currently in Kent but we rehome all over the UK provided you come to meet our dogs.

Homecheck & Adoption Donation applies.

Meeting the genetic needs of Kangals, Anatolians & any other Livestock Guardian Dogs

Little clip of our Sanctuary Dog, Hunter.... Doing his thing ..... Loving life 💕💕
Thank you so much to everyone who continues to support him. He was with us for 2 years in his Foster Home and after a couple of failed rehomings where he was returned to us due to his aggression it was finally decided that Hunter would stay put in his Foster Home forever and that he would remain under KARAS wing. We will continue to support him / pay for him for the rest of his life.
He is so loved & happy with his Foster Home. Of course, we would have loved for him to have found his special people but after two years he was so bonded to his Foster Home and they absolutely adore him in return.

Our special boy .....

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and their answers:Q) We're interested in adopting one of your dogs. Can we come to meet them?...
10/06/2024

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and their answers:

Q) We're interested in adopting one of your dogs. Can we come to meet them?
A) YES, OF COURSE! SEND US AN EMAIL AND WE'LL SEND YOU A COPY OF OUR "ADOPTION PROCEDURE" WITH A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FOLLOW PLUS A COPY OF OUR "ADOPTION APPLICATION FORM" SO THAT YOU HAVE ALL OF THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO START THE PROCESS OFF.

Q) Why do we need to complete an Adoption Application Form & have a Home Check before we can meet the dogs?
A) WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE A POTENTIAL GOOD MATCH BEFORE OUR VOLUNTEERS SPEND TIME INTRODUCING YOU TO THE DOGS. WE JUST DO NOT HAVE THE TIME OR THE VOLUNTEERS TO ALLOW LOTS OF PEOPLE TO VISIT - MANY OF WHOM MAY NOT EVEN BE SUITABLE FOR THAT PARTICULAR DOG. SO, WE COMPLETE OUR CHECKS FIRST TO SAVE FROM WASTING YOUR TIME AND OURS.

Q) I can't find a telephone number for KARAS Rescue and I have a few questions. What's the best way to contact you?
A) EMAIL IS THE ONLY WAY OF CONTACTING US. WE DO NOT HAVE A TELEPHONE NUMBER.

Q) Do you bring dogs over from Turkey?
A) NO. WE NEVER BRING DOGS OVER FROM ABROAD AND ALL OF THE DOGS WE HELP ARE ALREADY IN THE UK.

Q) Do you help dogs if they have a foreign microchip?
A) YES. WE HELP DOGS REGARDLESS OF WHICH COUNTRY THEIR MICROCHIP IS REGISTERED AND A HUGE AMOUNT OF OUR DOGS HAVE FOREIGN CHIPS.

Q) I've owned this breed for many, many years so why have you turned down my Application?
A) OWNING THE BREED FOR MANY YEARS IS NOT ENOUGH IN ITSELF. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A DOG WHICH WE KNOW WOULD PREFER TO BE AN ONLY DOG BUT YOU ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER DOG AT HOME THEN YOUR APPLICATION WILL LIKELY BE DECLINED.
YOU'D BE WELCOME TO RE APPLY IN THE FUTURE IF WE HAVE A MORE SUITABLE DOG FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD BUT EXPERIENCE ALONE ISN'T ENOUGH - IT NEEDS TO BE THE RIGHT MATCH.

Q) I sent an email yesterday but I haven't had a reply - why is that?
A) OUR VOLUNTEERS WORK FULL TIME IN THEIR "NORMAL" JOBS AND CANNOT REPLY TO EMAILS WHILE AT WORK. THEN THEY HAVE THEIR OWN DOGS TO SEE TO PLUS THE FOSTER DOGS. THE RESCUE IS RUN IN OUR (VERY LITTLE!) SPARE TIME AND WE ANSWER EMAILS AS SOON AS IT IS CONVENIENT. SOMETIMES, THIS MAY TAKE UP TO 48 HOURS.
IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD A REPLY AFTER 2 DAYS THEN PLEASE CHASE US UP.

Q) I have a wonderful home waiting, full of love - surely that's the most important thing? I can't afford the Adoption Donation Fee - can I still adopt one of your dogs?
A) NO. WE GIVE OUR DOGS A VALUE FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY ARE INCREDIBLY VALUABLE TO US AND TO GIVE THEM AWAY AS FREEBIES JUST DE VALUES THEM IMMEDIATELY BUT ALSO, OUR ADOPTION DONATION FEE HELPS US TO CONTINUE THE WORK WE DO FOR THE NEXT DOG THAT NEEDS US PLUS, A "KARAS" DOG IS COMPLETELY READY TO GO WHEN YOU ADOPT FROM US - YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY OUT FOR THE NEUTER / SPAY. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY FOR ANY VACCINES OR MICROCHIP. AND YOUR DOG IS ALREADY ASSESSED FOR BEHAVIOUR & TEMPREMENT TO ENSURE WE ARE MATCHING THE RIGHT DOG TO THE RIGHT HOME.

Q) Can the dog I am interested in live with another dog?
A) MAYBE. MAYBE NOT. WE WILL NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION AS THE SUCCESS OF THE TWO DOGS LIVING TOGETHER STRONGLY RELIES ON *YOU* AND HOW YOU GRADUALLY SET BOTH DOGS UP TO SUCCEED AND GIVE THEM THE TIME THEY NEED TO ADJUST & TO BOND AND TO ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP. YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED/ WILLING / ABLE TO KEEP THE DOGS SEPARATED INITIALLY AND GRADUALLY INTRODUCE THEM TOGETHER AROUND YOUR HOME FOLLOWING OUR ADVICE.

Q) Do you re-home dogs to people who are out at work?
A) YES, WE DO

Q) Do you re-home dogs to families with children?
A) YES, IF WE KNOW THE HISTORY OF THAT DOG AND HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY PASSED HIS ASSESSMENT.
THIS IS DECIDED ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS AND DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL DOG & WHETHER WE HAVE ANY BACKGROUND HISTORY ON THE DOG OR NOT

Q) How much funding do you receive to operate?
A) NONE. WE RECEIVE ABSOLUTELY ZERO FUNDING AND WE RELY 100% ON PUBLIC DONATIONS TO PAY FOR FOOD / VET BILLS / CLEANING COSTS / EQUIPMENT/ REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE.
WE HAVE *NO* PAID STAFF AND WE ARE RUN ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTEERS.

Q) I'd like to help. How can I make a donation?
A) PAYPAL IS THE EASIEST WAY AS IT KEEPS THE DONATIONS IN A SEPARATE ACCOUNT. THANK YOU:

I don't need to *see* your dog lunging at other dogs or at people in order to help them.
Even if I met you in person I would never ask you to "show me how your dog is aggressive" .... Why would I?? I already know what an aggressive dog looks like. I already know the behaviour they'll be doing..... I've seen it at least a hundred times before so I don't need to see *your* dog barking, lunging, rearing up, doing summersaults at the end of the lead....

The same applies to all other behaviours, too.

Separation Anxiety/ barking at everything walking past the house / pulling on the lead / insert any other behaviour here

Whether we meet in person or speak on the phone / video call the Consultation will be the same and will mostly be discussion-based & information gathering so that I can provide you with a specific Training Programme based on your individual requirements.

You'll be asked to complete an in-depth Behaviour Questionnaire prior to your Appointment so that I already have lots of information about what is going on.

For further details, see the website here:

Peter, male Kangal. 2 years old.

We've been quiet about Peter over the past couple of weeks whilst we've been investigating & finding out all about him.
We initially thought he was under a year old when he first arrived but we now know he is 2 years old.

He's just the perfect boy. There's not a bad bone in his body. He loves everyone he meets. He's goofy & soppy & all legs!! He's a clown. A do**us. He's clumsy. And he is just the biggest Cuddle Monster - he'll sit forever with you, having a cuddle if you let him.

He's only downfall .... And it's not even a real downfall .... Is that when he first meets new dogs he gets very over excited. Please watch the previous videos we've posted showing this behaviour. It's really not even a big deal. Once he has met the other dog(s) he is fine. He totally ignores them and if they should snap at him he backs away - he doesn't want any trouble!! But ... When he sees them for the first time he starts jumping, pulling & barking
This behaviour is 100% workable with a bit of training and he is getting better every single day.
He just hasn't met many dogs or been very well socialised (or he was socialised very poorly before arriving with us!!) and he just gets excited.
Don't judge him on that.
It's one minor, little blip within the hundreds of good things and the good stuff far, FAR outweighs this one "bad" thing.

We re-home all over the UK provided you come to meet the dog first.

Hunter has choices 😊

Check out Kangal Dog Trainer UK’s video.

Predictable or unpredictable??
21/04/2024

Predictable or unpredictable??

🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE around children.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE around visitors entering the home.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE towards other dogs.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE when strangers approach.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE when you try to move him off the sofa / bed / into another room.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE when you approach him whilst he's eating a bone / chew / treat / his dinner.
🐾Your Kangal is not UNPREDICTABLE when you try to groom him / bathe home / trim his nails.

If you have already identified the exact moments when your Kangal is likely to struggle then he is entirely PREDICTABLE ..... You know EXACTLY what the issues are .... You know EXACTLY that there's a possibility of your Kangal reacting in those certain situations .... It's happened before (it may not happen all the time but that's a post for another day and there are many different reasons as to why "one day he's fine but the next day he's really lunging & barking") but yes, it has happened previously, over a period of weeks / months / years and it may gradually be getting worse.

So, if History is repeating itself and a pattern is forming as to when you see these behaviours then you can pretty much predict what will happen if you carry on as you are.

This makes your Kangal entirely PREDICTABLE ....*Not* UNPREDICTABLE.

You are blessed with a dog that tries to communicate with you in the only way he knows how.
It is your job as his owner to not only listen to that communication but to act on it, too. To hear what is being said. To hear what your Kangal is saying. To listen to what he is saying. To figure out what it is he needs to stop him from feeling this way.

You can predict that if your Kangal is in *that* environment or if he sees *that* trigger in the distance then he will begin to react.

You know what is coming.
It's happened before in that situation.

It's PREDICTABLE.

*Phew* that's the first part of your Training journey done!

The second & the most important part of your training journey is to stop & listen to your dog. If your dog still tries to communicate with you then grab that opportunity by the b*llox!!
Many dogs will give up even trying to communicate with their owner - they have been ignored for so long or punished for it over time that they'll stop even trying to tell you when they are struggling and these are the really sad, heartbreaking cases which take a lot more time & effort to help so ... If you are blessed with a dog that tries desperately to tell you that he doesn't like certain things then your job is far easier - grab this opportunity!

And now the third part of your Training journey is the actual Training Programme & the Behaviour Modification Plan.
This is always best done under the guidance & support of a suitably qualified & experienced canine professional who can tailor a Plan just for you & your dog.

But don't contact them to say, "My Kangal can be unpredictable...."

The complete opposite is usually closer to the truth

19/04/2024

This past week, over a 7 day period, since last weekend we have been asked to help 14 Turkish Kangals & Anatolian Shepherds ..... FOURTEEN!!! In just one week.
This is the highest number yet over such a short space of time.

The calls are a mixture of males & females. Older dogs & younger dogs. Genuine requests due to death of the owner and irresponsible owners who "didn't know he would get this big"

Around 45% of the enquiries are from Council Dog Pounds, up & down the UK. They have collected these dogs as a stray & the dog has served it's statutory 7 days in the Pound before it will be sent off to a Rescue Centre to be rehomed (except none of the decent Rescue Centres in the UK have any more space for anymore dogs so that doesn't always happen) OR they are euthanised under the Council Pound because, well, the Councils just don't have the funds or the space to kennel dogs on a long term basis.

Another 45% of our enquiries come from Joe Public.
"Can't look after him anymore"
Or
"I've had to move and can't take the dog"
Or
"My partner has left me and I can't take care of the dog on my own"
Or
"I didn't know he would get this big"
Or
'I can't afford him anymore"
Or
Our absolute favourite....
"He's just so aggressive towards other dogs/ people and has bitten 3 times now"
(I call it "our favourite" because it is always SO infuriating that folk do not work with a decent Canine Behaviourist to help with these problems which would make a huge difference to the dog but instead, they try to re-home an aggressive dog or think that the breed specific Rescue should have some duty to "fix" the damaged dogs because "he just needs someone who will understand the breed & he's such a good boy really") .... Thing is, there is not a queue of people lining up, wanting to adopt your aggressive Kangal who has already bitten 3 people .... Those magical Farms that you speak of do not exist.... "He'd be great for a Farmer with a bit of land for him to live on" .... What on earth makes you think that Farmers want an aggressive dog living on their land?? It's all bull. It doesn't happen.

Then there's the last 10%
These are from the Police or Social Services that are trying to help a dog.

Regardless of who contacts us our answer, currently, is always "No, sorry"
And this destroys our heart & soul on a daily basis over & over again.

Our precious breed that we care so deeply about. Needing our help more than ever. Young, healthy Kangals and we just know they're being euthanised because Rescue Centres are too full to take them in.

What's even more heartbreaking is the amount of people who always offer to take that dog off of Death Row.
Folk offering to take the un Assessed / un neutered / un health checked / un vaccinated dog that comes with no back up or on going support.
If you TRULY wanted to help and were GENUINELY looking for another dog then why would you not support your local Rescue Centre and adopt one of their dogs that is already Assessed/ neutered / vaccinated etc ..... This then frees up a space and allows that Rescue Centre to help the next dog in need.
Why must folk prefer to by-pass the very organisations that try to help on a daily basis and that is run by volunteers who lose sleep on a daily basis trying to save dogs RESPONSIBLY and by doing things right .... And doing things well .... To a high standard ....
Just to have Joe Blogs come along and think he can do better because he saved a dog from Death Row ....

Our Volunteers work on this behind the scenes far more than you'll ever know. Most of what we do doesn't make it on to Facebook.

And lastly, KARAS Rescue does not EVER bring dogs over from Turkey (or any other country!)
All of our dogs are already in the UK before they need our help.
We do not provide funds to bring dogs over from other countries and we do not support the practice of bringing dogs over in any way.
We have enough Kangals already over here needing help. We have enough young, fit & healthy Kangals being euthanised because there are not enough homes for them. We don't need any more being brought over and that is incredibly difficult to write because we know the horrendous conditions that some of these dogs are "living" in abroad but honestly, when we've had FOURTEEN Kangals & Anatolians in the UK this week alone needing a Rescue Space and not a single Rescue Space can be found for them .... And they are dying .... Daily .... We have to stop!

If you are having behaviour problems with your dog then please consider booking a DECENT Canine Behaviourist as most issues can be worked through and you'll probably be able to keep your dog.

If you're thinking of buying or adopting a Kangal or an Anatolian Shepherd then please, do your research - yes, they grow big! So, don't get one unless you're prepared for it.

And please, please, support your local Rescue Centres. Kangals are in Rescue up & down the UK and you'll find one near you if you search hard enough 🐾🐾🐾

Our KARAS boys are desperately low on dog food again. It's the biscuits we need - this is their main food and we're down to our very last sack of food now.
Please, please, if you could buy them a bag of food we'd really appreciate it.

Or even a packet of treats. They both have training sessions every single day and we use treats as our rewards so we get through a lot.

Or you could make a small cash donation to our PayPal account if you would prefer:

Two whole years of Hunter 💕💕💕

It's hard to believe he is the same dog. He is so full of love these days. He's relaxed & calm. He is confident in himself but not overly so - just enough that he feels safe .... He knows the routine. He knows how his days will be. And he is happy.

We love you, Hunter 💕💕💕
