🤩 Fun Fact Friday: Hedgehogs have around 5,000 spines (spikes/prickles) on their backs. 🦔 Each spine lasts a year before falling out and a new one grows in its place.

🔥🎆This bonfire night, please 1️⃣🛑 STOP, 2️⃣👉 MOVE, 3️⃣✅ CHECK

1️⃣🛑 STOP – Do you need to have a bonfire this year? Can you attend a community event, or mark the occasion in a different, more wildlife-friendly way? The fewer bonfires there are, the fewer wildlife casualties there are too.

2️⃣👉 MOVE – if you do decide to have a bonfire, always build it on the day you plan to light it. Move all accumulated materials to a new site as hedgehogs 🦔 and other wildlife 🐁 or pets may be hiding inside. 🐈‍⬛

3️⃣✅ CHECK – before lighting from one side, check the entire bonfire pile carefully for wildlife 🐁 and pets 🐈‍⬛. Shining a torch inside the pile, 🔦 gently lift each section with a pole or broom. 🧹 Never use a spade or fork as these can cause great harm. Listen for the huffing sound of a hedgehog which has been disturbed. 🦔

Carved a pumpkin for Halloween? 🎃
Please put your scraps in the compost bin. 🗑️

👉 Cornwall Wildlife Trust says "There is a popular misconception that leaving your pumpkin out for the wildlife is a great way to support nature. 🤔

"This is misleading and can actually lead to harm for hedgehog populations, which are already facing serious declines." 📉

It said dumped pumpkins could cause "stomach upsets" in hedgehogs - leading to dehydration which could be fatal. 🦔

"Even if the hog survives, at this time of year any illness threatens their chance of surviving winter hibernation," the trust said. ☃️

Pumpkin leftovers could instead go straight into compost, a temporary bird feeder or farmers might be able to make use of remains, it said. ✅

One of our finders mums is a 'knitting nana' and a super talented lady. She knitted this post box topper for us and you can see it in the centre of town by the bus stop and opticians. We were there on Friday chatting to people and raising awareness of the hedgehogs and the Hostel. Thank you to everyone who came to talk to us and had their picture taken with their topper and donated to the Hostel. You all raised £75 for the Hostel on Friday x

Please MOVE your bonfire completely before lighting it. There is no point pushing a stick under it as a hedgehog will just curl up; not run out. Please check for hedgehogs before lighting a bonfire!
