Get to know me, Dog Trainer edition!

In my previous job role as the head dog trainer at the leading supplier of fully trained family pets. I was lucky enough to work with personal protection dogs, police dogs and potential military/prison dogs.

It was an extremely interesting & enjoyable part of my dog training career!

I learnt a lot! Timing, stability, how body language & eye contact can massively impact a dog. Lots of obedience drills & techniques the list could really go on!

But It especially taught me how important it is for a dog to have a solid temperament and to be 100% stable before teaching them how to bite!

I loved my time working with the bolshie, confident and high drive dogs. It definitely gave me the experience and knowledge to help me today! 🖤🐾

🐾 I will be offering an off-lead pack walk & train! 🐕‍🦺

This will be held on the 29th of September at 10:30am. We will be going to Park Hall Country Park.

This pack walk will be £20 per dog and will last around 1 hour & 30minutes.

Dogs that attend must have a basic understanding of recall and should be on a long line or have e collar conditioning if it’s not 100%

Dogs who are working through reactivity or space invaders I would advise to be muzzled as this will give you more confidence and opportunity to advocate for you dogs instead of them feeling the need to.

Ultimately this pack walk will be a great way of exposing your dog to other off lead dogs. It will be great to teach them how to navigate threw off-lead encounters in a safe and positive way. You & your dog will learn social cues and how to know when to step in. It will also be perfect for proofing your recall training too!

As this is my first one I will be having limited spaces to see how best it work and so I am able to give guidance and advice throughout.

Structure is a vital part of dog ownership!

Structure will not just help you to navigate through dog ownership. But it most importantly will help your dog to slow into your life better. It will also make your dog’s life so much calmer and stress free.

Structure isn’t about limiting your dog’s enjoyment. It’s actually more about giving them time to rest, recharge and in some cases de stress. So that they have the most fulfilling life possible!

So don’t feel bad for giving your dog some crate time, or not allowing them to sniff everything on a walk!

Remember that a more structured life will give your dog the peace & harmony it deserves 🫶🏻

Training isn’t just about putting a piece of training equipment on a dog and TA-DAH job done! 🐾

Genuine dog trainers will want to do a deep dive into you and your dogs lifestyle in the form of an assessment session.

They will want to teach you better ways to better understand your dog and how best to communicate with them.

They will want to get to the root cause of your dog’s issue or, in most cases, issues. Is your dog in pain or discomfort?

Many breeds I see daily are gundog/working breeds and therefore are mini athletes in their own right! So, in many cases they can be suffering from muscular or skeletal pain or could have injuries that owners are not aware of. In some cases the dog’s I see even have underline health problems. So pain and discomfort is a big category we’ll look at.

They will look at breed fulfillment. Are you meeting your dogs needs and if not, how can we help to improve that?

Is your dog getting enough downtime? Are they constantly following you around or always on the go? If yes, let’s get them chilling more. Is your dog’s diet a factor? What’s your dog’s motivator? If you don’t think your dog doesn’t have one (EVERY dog has one!), then let’s find it!

Then a big one is RELATIONSHIP! Once you build on that, most things will then slot into place.

These are just a few factors your trainer should take into account when they’re starting your training journey.

Dog training is not a quick fix! It’s more of a lifestyle change for you and your dog. Equipment won’t distinguish the root cause of your issues, it will just mask them.

So make sure when picking a trainer they’re doing it for the dog’s well-being and not just to cash in on your problems.

Next Sunday!!

Pack walk & steam train 🐾 🚂

My next pack walk will be held on Sunday the 4th August at 10:30am at Rudyard Lake.

We will be starting off with some training drills & neutral walking. Then we will be boarding the steam train which is dog friendly if they are sat on the floor. To finish we will end with a bit more neutral walking

This will be a great experience for all and a perfect way to expose the dogs to unfamiliar sounds, surfaces and motions.

I really could not fault Jax, he was absolutely amazing! He took everything in his stride and was super obedient throughout! I have to remind myself sometimes how far Jax has come. From a young nervy stray found on the streets to a loving, obedient, very drivey and well rounded boy he is today. I’m so proud of Jax & his dedicated owner Lisa 💞

We loved being a part of this great event! Especially seeing all the different doggos! 🥹

Response reversal is a vital part of dog training! Squirrels 🐿️ 🔄🦴 What is response reversal? 😬 Response reversal is all about teaching the dog how to perform a totally different behaviour in a place where they would normally perform an undesirable behaviour. So for Luna I have taught her that when she sees a stimulus such as the squirrel like in the video. That instead of chasing the squirrel she should instead look and returns to me. How do I teach my dog response reversal? 🔄 With any behaviour you’d like to change I find it better to always start with something simple. Holding a handful of food and waiting for the dog to disengage before saying “yes” and letting the have some. Then progressing it to a pond of ducks and every time the dog look at you or looks away saying “yes” and reinforcing with food. These are just a few great ways to start the process of response reversal! 🐺 The relationship between you and your dog is just as important as the training you put in! 🐾 If you hate your boss would you really work as well as you could for them? Probably not! Now I don’t believe dogs can hate their owners or anyone for that matter! But I do believe that they can have a poor relationship with them. Which then in turn will show in their day to day life together, with their training or lack of. But it will definitely be apparent in how they act around said person. Sadly I’ve seen first hand how having no relationship or a poor relationship with a dog can have detrimental affect on how it acts around that person. When I first started my career as a dog trainer/kennel maid. I volunteered every afternoon to lead and work with lots of different dogs. I worked with a “dog trainer” who spent most of his time basically bullying dogs into doing what he said instead of teaching them. I was very young (17) and very new to the game but could see that none of the dogs worked well for him even after his aplpha techniques. Even I knew then it was due to the lack of relationship and enjoyment the dogs were having. (There was also very little luring & teaching going on but that’s for another day!) Thankfully his training career was short lived and he is not around dogs anymore! But from that a knew exactly what I didn’t want to do or be like and what not to do when training a dog! The conman question I get asked with any reactive dog is “Will we ever have a normal, relaxed and enjoyable walk?” And my answer is almost always YES! You just have to follow the training regime and follow all the help and guidance given to you. It won’t happen over night and it nearly always won’t happen after just a few weeks BUT it will happen!
