Little man Angus stops and sniffs almost every spot whilst out on his walks, he’s so precious, as he is a senior we don’t do zoomies.

Sniffing on walks provides dogs with mental stimulation along with navigating smells.
Just 20 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hours walk in terms of enrichment for your dog. 🐶

I truly believe that if Steve Irwin were alive today, he would have a dedicated group of people who hated him for how he treated animals.

Steve always treated every species he worked with, as the species they were, not forcing them to change their nature.

More and more I find myself trying to convince people to "let the dog go outside, it's okay if they get a little dirty" or "your snake is arboreal and can't just be confined to a small tub." Or "Your working breed dog is not happy being still and lazy in your one bedroom apartment with nothing to keep them active and thinking."

It seems in this next generation of animal husbandry, we're deciding that all animals are now going to become (and be treated as) our little babies.

Now, is it okay to refer to your furry, feathered, scaly friend as such? Of course!
Is it okay to treat them as human babies...absolutely not at all.

As we see this change taking place, so to do we see more and more stressed out animals. Ones with a lack of structure and mental enrichment...but tons and tons of random toys and bags of treats.

What Steve Irwin did is create an environment that was enriching for the animals he had. Not attempt to force the animals to adjust to his environment.

Taking your Border Collie or herding, working, hunting, breed on a 10 minute walk (as long as you remember, it's not raining or just not feeling upto it) once a day, is not cutting it.

Locking your pyrenees or Shepherd breed in a kennel all day and then keeping'em in a small apartment, but still expecting the dog to be still and always cuddling...not cutting it.

Keeping your African grey parrot in a small enclosure with a few items that you've not replaced...is not cutting it.

When you bring an animal into your life. It is so important to understand what that animal is and have a structured enrichment routine and appropriate setup for the breed/species before you take in the animal.

Anything less than what your animal needs is a disservice to your best friend.

Be kind to your animals, enrich their lives (in a way that's appropriate for them). Keep them thinking. Keep them exploring. Give them understanding and structure and you will keep them happy.

Tuesday ☀️

Slow, steady and lots of sniffing (every corner 🥰) for Angus - he doesn’t do Zoomies on walks but that’s ok, he’s 14 this year! He’s very content and in his element when doing his own thing 💙

Lots of fun and play for Barney, his smile is adorable!

No Jack, Em and Smidge today but will be doing extended walks with them later on in the week 🐶

And other walks that aren’t posted on social media due to owner’s preference🐾

As the weather heats up here in tye UK, every dog-related business and so-called dog “expert” will be posting and sharing warnings about dogs and hot weather. But what is the right information? How hot does it really have to be, and what should we do if our dog overheats?

Well, all dogs are different and will therefore respond differently, but risk factors for heat related illness include things like age, breed, underlying health conditions, and increased body weight. Less obvious risk factors to consider are activity levels, climate conditioning, and hydration status. Taking these factors into account, we can see how this variability can lead to people getting caught out.

So, rather than monitoring the temperature, what we should be doing is monitoring and observing the dogs in front of us and looking for those early signs that the dog is struggling, such as:
Increased respiratory rate, panting, red gums, ‘smiling’ to expose the gums, a long flattened, lolling tongue, shade-seeking, slowing down, stopping or lying down. Watch your dog carefully. If you know your dog well, you may notice other subtle changes in behaviour.

The best course of action always is to stop, find shade, and rest. Offer cool drinking water little and often (not excessive amounts all at once) and cool them down by cold water immersion or evaporative cooling – which just means applying cold water all over the dogs body alongside air movement from a breeze or fan. If there isn't much water available, concentrate on the groin and armits where there is less hair and blood vessels are nearer the skin. Even in the most severe cases, dogs suffering from heat-stroke should always be “cooled first, transported second”

Remember that prevention is always better than cure:
🐕Choose early morning or cool evening walks.
💦Offer water regularly to keep your dog hydrated.
🏡And don’t forget that no dog died from missing a walk. Staying at home is always an option!
😎Keep cool and stay safe!

Lovely Barney enjoyed his walk this morning, even at 9am it was getting warm 🥵 so walk was cut short, some rest and water breaks and shaded area stops.

He loved his morning exercise in the freshly cut field🐾

🥰 Polite notice 🥰

There is currently field fertiliser down in the public fields in Chilcompton.
Aslong as you give your dogs a thorough wash and then dry well after their walks, your dogs will be absolutely fine

Symptoms can include red and irritated skin.
