Border Disease - Hairy Shaker Syndrome
Let’s talk about border disease 🐑
Studies have shown at least 1/3 of sheep flocks have been exposed to the virus which causes border disease (BDV).
Depending on when infection occurs it can lead to:
🐑 Abortions
🐑 Barren ewes
🐑 Low birth weights
🐑 Congenital deformities
🐑 Poor survival rates
A distinct sign that BDV is present is when lambs are born with hairy shaker syndrome, which we saw on-farm in the below video. This particular farm had an 8% barren rate in the affected group.
To investigate whether BDV is present in your flock, blood samples should be taken. As always please contact us if you have any questions ☎️
Last week we shared the news we can now run worm egg counts in-house. This video from the Moredun Group does a brilliant job of describing worm life cycles and explains the confusing concept of anthelmintic resistance 🔬
