A repost from 2022 as today is meant to be hot hot hot.
Here is another reminder to keep your pets cool. Unfortunately in the last heatwave, we were seeing lots and lots of dogs, especially the Brachycephalic breeds who unfortunately are more at risk of heatstroke, out on walks and days out with families on the hottest part of the day. Your loyal companion may look like they are coping well with the heat, even enjoying themselves BUT they have fur, bare paws and lack the understanding of the danger of how hot it is. So please, keep your fur babies safe by keeping them at home with fresh water in a cool room.
Cats will usually keep themselves cool by lying in the shade or, sunbathing until they get hot and then moving but please ensure they have fresh, cool water and plenty of shade to laze under.
Your small furries, if outside, will need lots of shade too but remember that those tunnels, hideys and huts get really hot in full sun so move the whole area to a shady patch to ensure they are as cool as possible. A frozen plastic water bottle wrapped in a towel or blanket for them to lie next to will really help them to cool down, these can be helpful for those indoor pets too if your house gets a little warm.
Symptoms of heatstroke can be: heavy breathing, fast heartrate, lethargy, collapsing, excessive drooling and even seizures.
