Hello Summer ββ±π
Today marks the official start of summer which means one thing..... hot and sunny days.... well, not always, but it should π€£
Here's some handy tips to help keep your pets cool over the summer....
Small furries, if outside, will need lots of shade, please move hutches away from direct sunlight and if impossible to do so, remove any hideys or tunnels as these get ridiculously hot in the sun. Placing wrapped up frozen water bottles in their hutches and/or indoor cages can act as a nice cooling snuggle buddy to lie next to. You can wrap the frozen water bottles in a towel or a blanket but do not leave them in there without being wrapped up.
Walking your dogs very early morning and/or late at night, or not at all if not possible on either of those, helps keep your dogs safe from overheating and/or burning their pads on the hot concrete. If you are going out for the day and leaving them home, ensure they have fresh water readily available while you are out. If you have a Brachycephalic breed of dog, please be mindful that they are at greater risk of heatstroke due to their reduced ability to thermo regulate..
Cats are usually pretty good at keeping themselves cool by moving into the shade when they are too hot but ensuring they have enough fresh, cool water and plenty of shade is essential.
Symptoms of heatstroke vary but can include: heavy breathing/panting, fast heart rate, lethargy, collapsing, excessive drooling and even seizures.
