Massage therapy - good for the mind and the body!

Did you know, when we massage your dogs, happy hormones are released as well as cortisol reducing - leading to a reduction in stress and increase in those ‘feel good’ emotions? If you have a nervous dog, massage therapy can be a fantastic way to alleviate tension and stress, as well as supporting their muscular health!

We speak a lot about an ideal body condition score, but how can you check this regularly at home?
🐾 Have a look at your dog! Can you see a nice abdominal tuck upwards behind the ribs? Do they taper in nicely at the waist? Can you slightly see the last 2 ribs with only a very thin layer covering them?
🐾 Have a feel of your dog! You should be able to feel their spine with no excessive layer of fat. Can you easily feel their ribs along the side of their ribcage?
Not only is it so important for their musculoskeletal health to keep them lean, but obesity has also been closely linked with heart disease, cancer and other nasty diseases! We want our dogs to live as long as possible, and keeping them lean is the easiest way to reduce the risk of them developing debilitating conditions!

As canine therapists, we cover a lot of things at degree level so we can support your dogs to the highest level! This includes:
🐾 Anatomy and physiology - knowing the anatomy of your dog’s musculoskeletal system helps us perform targeted treatment and apply appropriate techniques!
🐾 Canine behaviour and welfare - meaning your dogs are in safe hands! We are able to monitor your dog’s behaviour so we can look out for subtle behavioural signs of pain, discomfort and stress!
🐾 Canine biomechanics - considering the structure, function and motion of your dog’s bodies! This is extremely important when we are completing gait assessment so we know what to look out for
🐾 Musculoskeletal pathologies and diseases - knowing the foundations of what is happening at a cellular level when your dog has a disease is super important to be able to support and help to manage their condition with hydrotherapy and massage therapy!

Massage therapy 🩷

It sounds like a pamper session for your dog (which it usually is!), but it’s a lot more than that! We will use our skills as therapists to visually assess your dog and carry out a thorough palpation in order to form a bespoke treatment plan. We can target any fibrotic scar tissue, areas of tension , pain, and loss of muscle mass. We use very specific techniques that are scientifically proven to improve the quality of muscle mass and tissue!

Whilst a lot of dogs do love it (Ted demonstrating here perfectly 😍), it’s an amazing form of therapy for their bodies! To find out more, check out our website today ➡️ https://racaninemassage.co.uk

As Canine Therapists who see a range of musculoskeletal conditions and dogs day to day, these are the main 3 things we would recommend to help keep your dog’s musculoskeletal health in the best possible condition and reduce the risk of issues developing:

1. Keeping them at a lean, ideal body condition score! This means no excessive fat and weight for them to carry, which puts excessive pressure on their joints! Research shows us that obese dogs are more likely to develop arthritis and cruciate ligament rupture. Keeping them lean is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to protect your dogs health!

2. Ditch the ball flingers and opt for lower impact exercise. The sharp turns and abrupt stops involved when using a ball thrower can increase the risk of injury massively. Scent work, playing find it games with a ball, or going for a hike will be much more gentle on your dog’s joints!

3. Add in hydrotherapy or massage therapy before issues arise - keeping on top of their musculoskeletal system BEFORE there are any issues is the best way to prevent the risk of anything occurring! These therapies will strengthen the muscles, increase joint range of motion whilst also keeping your dog fit!

Choosing massage or hydrotherapy!
Both are fantastic forms of complementary therapy to support your dog’s musculoskeletal system, however here are some reasons we may select one over the other!
🐾 If there are contraindications to use the pool, massage therapy is a great alternative!
🐾 If your dog has back pain (or wider pain which isn’t under control), we may use massage therapy first to alleviate and reduce any tension prior to introducing hydrotherapy!
🐾 If your dog has arthritis, massage therapy may be used first to target soft tissue restrictions, but the pool is a fantastic form of non-weight bearing exercise to enhance their joint range of motion
🐾 If you are looking for your dog to loose weight and the pool is appropriate for them, we will use this to try and accelerate their weight loss!
A combination of both can also be used in your sessions to maximise the benefits seen! For more information, drop us a DM today! 💜

How can I manage my dog’s musculoskeletal health between appointments?

💜 Keeping them lean at an ideal body condition score - this will reduce the pressure through their joints!
🧡 Regular exercise that’s appropriate for them - to keep their joints mobile and maintain muscle mass
💙 Warm them up prior to any exercise off lead - this may include lead walking, massage, and heat packs! This can reduce the risk of injury or muscle overexertion!
💚 Having rugs down and non slip surfaces at home to prevent the risk of slips and falls
🩷 Feeding a suitable diet and adding omegas and a good quality joint supplement!

When we can’t use hydrotherapy and why!
🐾 If your dog has any open wounds, skin lesions, or infection, it’s not appropriate to treat them in the pool due to the risk of infection and aggravating any ongoing skin condition. We may however be able to use massage therapy as an alternative to support them!
🐾 If your dog is in season - please do let us know and we can reschedule their session!
🐾 If your dog has had any vomiting or diarrhoea in the past 48 hours - this is to ensure we mitigate the spread of bacteria and infection to other dogs!
🐾Certain musculoskeletal conditions may not be appropriate to be treated in the pool and may require an underwater treadmill or massage therapy only. If you’re unsure, please pop us a message and we can advise you on whether hydrotherapy in the pool would be suitable!
For more information or if you have any questions, please do pop us a message!
