Today is National Walk your Dog Day! 🩷

Regular exercise is amazing for our dogs - not only for their mental wellbeing and to use those noses - but also to help maintain good musculoskeletal health! Keeping their bodies and joints moving will have a huge impact on muscle development, joint mobility, and can also contribute to any pain that they may experience!

There can be such thing as ‘too much’ for our dogs - when we may see fatigue and muscular tension, as well as ‘too little’ - which might result in a loss of muscle mass and joint stiffness. Every dog’s exercise requirement is so individual!

We want you to share your favourite local dog walks with us in the comments below for other lovely owners to enjoy, and to get outside and enjoy the outdoors with them 🥰

Get to know your therapists! What led Rebecca into this career?

I have always had a passion for working with dogs and increasing their quality of life. When I was running my dog training and behaviour business, I saw lots of dogs that were in pain and showing negative behaviours due to this. I was often referring back to the vets or to other professionals to help the reduce their pain which often resolved their behaviours. Then as my two childhood dogs got older, they started to show signs of pain from conditions like arthritis. I knew I wanted to help all of these painful dogs more, so I enrolled on the Canine Therapy BSc at Writtle University and absolutely loved learning more about the different therapies and understanding how to help these dogs more. Now I get to help dogs everyday and it is so rewarding to see their progress!🥰

⭐️ Fun swims! ⭐️
We have limited Monday availability for new dogs to join our fun and fitness swims!

These are perfect for dogs with no underlying musculoskeletal dia gnosis, whose owners would just like to bring them for swimming to improve their swimming skills, build their confidence, accelerate weight loss, keep them fit and healthy, prevent injury, or for conditioning for sporting and working dogs!
The session involves:
🐾 An initial assessment to ensure your dog is healthy and suitable to swim, and so we can target any specific areas
🐾 A session in the pool, carried out by a fully qualified and insured hydrotherapist. We will be able to use manual techniques in rest breaks to really enhance the benefits of treatment!
🐾 A rinse and rough dry!

Rest breaks vs swimming - which part does your dog prefer?!

We have some dogs who absolutely love their rest breaks - where we can apply manual techniques such as massage, stretching or passive range of motion, all of which will enhance the benefits of treatment! Other dogs aren’t so keen on waiting around, and can’t wait to complete their next lap!

Rest breaks are a crucial part of our treatment - we can check your dog’s vital signs to ensure they don’t fatigue, and it also allows them rest and recovery in between intense exercise!

We can show our dogs we love them in so many ways, but by supporting their musculoskeletal health we can improve their quality of life - keeping them happier and healthier for longer 🥰

We love hearing from our wonderful owners how much massage therapy and hydrotherapy has improved their dog’s lives - from reducing behavioural signs of pain, to being more playful and happier to exercise! We also love seeing the physical changes in your dogs that we notice when we complete their assessment prior to each session - subtle changes really do add up overtime! 🥰

Get to know your therapists! What led Lorna into this career? ⬇️

I fell in love with hydrotherapy after seeing the benefits for our senior rescue, Anna. We rescued Anna when she was 15 years old and riddled with arthritis, and weekly hydrotherapy was the only thing that brought her comfort and many pain free months! She was able to enjoy walks again, and even got to come on holiday with us in the wonderful 7 months we had together (with the help of her buggy so she could still enjoy exploring!). I enrolled at Writtle University for my Canine Therapy degree after falling in love with complementary therapies and seeing the huge benefits they had on all of our dogs! Doing this for a job is a beautiful reminder of Anna, and it’s a pleasure to be able to able to support other dogs in their journey 🩷

Making adaptations during the session based on how your dog responds!

We don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach! We will tailor treatment to your dog, based on their initial assessment, history, and how they respond in the pool! Sometimes this can differ for each session! Your dog may have had a busy week and may be a little bit more restricted, or they may be more tired which means we have to take things a little slower! We can completely adapt to your dog’s behaviour and physical presentation for each session, and we will always chat through these changes with you so you know what we are feeling and seeing! 🥰

Every dog we see is so unique and thats the beauty of them! 🩷 To find out more about how we can help, check out our website today! https://racaninemassage.co.uk

✨ ISLA ✨
This sweet natured girl is a beautiful rommie rescue, who has been for 6 sessions of monthly hydrotherapy now! Isla can be quite cautious of her surroundings and had never been swimming before! We made sure to take things slow and she now gets into the pool with much more ease! She is also maintaining a wonderful swimming posture and is using her forelimbs equally now when swimming 😍

Here is what her lovely Mum has to say about her progress since starting hydrotherapy:
✨ I brought Isla to hydrotherapy as another form of exercise to keep her fit and comfortable in her senior years and to build her confidence in the water incase she ever needed to swim! I have noticed a huge improvement in her confidence in the pool since her first swim and she is now a lot more relaxed. She also loves the massages in her rest breaks in the pool! Hydrotherapy has been such a good addition for her; it keeps her comfortable and she is always tired and content afterwards. I would encourage anyone with a dog who is happy to go in water to try hydrotherapy as a great way to exercise and keep their body moving especially for overweight or older dogs or as part of rehabilitation ✨

Alongside regular hydrotherapy she has been seeing who is here every Sunday 🩷

Signs of muscular health issues! 💪🏻

These can be really subtle and we can always point these out to you if we notice any changes! They might include changes in their coat pattern or texture, muscular twitching, muscle asymmetry, repetitive itching or chewing over a specific area, and uneven nail wear.

Remember these may be secondary to an underlying joint pathology so we may suggest a vet visit if we notice a significant change!

Struggling with weight loss for your dog?

Hydrotherapy may be the missing puzzle piece for them 🧩

If your dog is still struggling to lose weight despite increasing their exercise and reducing their food intake, we would always first and foremost recommend you getting this with your vet. If the vet is happy that there is no underlying cause, hydrotherapy is often an amazing addition to help speed up their weight loss!

Hydrotherapy increases the demand on the cardiovascular system, giving your dog a good cardio workout whilst also activating a whole range of muscles that aren’t always engaged during walking and regular exercise! Think of it as a full body workout for your dog 💪🏻

We have one client who successfully managed to shift an excess 5kg off of their dog just by adding hydrotherapy in, alongside reducing food intake and upping walks! 😍

This could add years onto your dog’s life, as obesity is PROVEN to contribute to many cancers and other nasty diseases that can shorten their lifespan! 🩷 Get in touch with us today to find out how we can support your dog’s weight loss 🥰

Can my brachycephalic dog have hydrotherapy?

The answer is absolutely - yes! As qualified hydrotherapists we will always support your dogs and take extra precautions for those shorter muzzles - making sure we monitor vital signs closely such as heart rate and breathing rate. We know these breeds may struggle a little bit more with intense exercise so we will always start our sessions slow and steady - never pushing your dog to the point of fatigue and exhaustion!

We treat pugs and french bulldogs and all are doing incredibly well with their treatment! 🥰 Despite the myth that these breeds dislike water and can’t swim well, we have seen some great swimming from these guys and they absolutely love their sessions!

Drop us a message today if you have a brachycephalic breed and are looking to start hydrotherapy with them! 😍

Do you live a bit too far away from us but still want our support? Did you know we offer a fully remote gait analysis service?

This involves you sending us a range of specific videos of your dog moving, which we can then analyse and report on our findings. This is particularly helpful if you have a sporting or working dog who you want to keep in tip-top condition, or if you have noticed a change in movement that you would like professional input on!

We can discuss our findings with you and these may be useful if you are working with your vet on your dog’s musculoskeletal health.

Check out our website to find out more about this service ➡️ https://racaninemassage.co.uk/gait-analysis/

Why we wouldn’t recommend letting your dachshund free swim! ⭐️

Most owners of sausages probably know the risks of IVDD that come with the breed, and whilst we are passionate about supporting EVERY dog that comes to swim with us, this is even more important for dachshunds! They have a unique body shape - with shorter legs and a longer back - and they may struggle more to maintain buoyancy in the pool.

If left to free swim, we may see rotation and ‘twisting’ of the spine, which can put extra pressure on the paraspinal muscles (the muscles that run along the spine), and we focus on strengthening these, NOT causing any injury or over exertion!

You will never see any dog swimming with us completely unsupported, as we believe we can get the best results when we utilise our skills as hydrotherapists to enhance the benefits from hydrotherapy 🥰
