Post puppy fun swim cuddles! 😍
Lisbon is a natural in the pool, and as a working breed it’s so important that she receives the right amount of exercise and stimulation as she is growing! Her owners are amazing and have been building up her confidence with exposure, and are soon starting her gun dog training 🥰

She is such a happy, confident pup but we always take into consideration her age during treatment as we don’t want to over exercise her and cause injury. We can’t wait to watch this little one grow up 💕

Bella’s progress! 😍
This little terrier cross has been swimming with us since we opened! She’s made huge progress in the pool, engaging her core and maintaining an upright position now rather than her bum sinking down! She’s using her hindlimbs much more evenly and she’s much more confident in the pool 🥰 As well as this, she has been seeing alongside twice monthly hydrotherapy, and she is building a nice amount of muscle mass! There are so many benefits of a multimodal approach and we love to see the benefits your dogs have when combining therapies! 😍

What progress may look like for your dog…
♥️ Behavioural improvements - pain is closely linked to behavioural changes, so one of the first things owners may notice following treatment is an improvement in behaviour. We recommend keeping a behaviour diary at home before, during and after treatment so we can track any positive changes!
♥️ Gait changes - owners often notice how much better their dog is moving, including more even use of all limbs, reduced lameness, and less stiffness. All of these signs can indicate a reduction in pain!
♥️ Appearance - we often see weight loss, an increase in muscle mass, and also improved posture! These are all huge indicators that treatment is having a positive effect on your dog!
Want to see some of these benefits for your dog?

Jessie enjoying her massage therapy! 😍

This beautiful girl comes to see us for regular treatment to work on some minor areas of muscular tension, to maintain her comfort levels and keep her joints nice and mobile. We always reassess every dog that comes to see us before treatment, to make sure we can provide targeted therapy!

We will always chat through with you any changes we can see or feel. If you ever have any questions at your appointment please feel free to ask away! ☺️

Finley 😍
Labradors may be more predisposed to conditions such as elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia and arthritis. We can use a combination of therapies, including massage therapy and hydrotherapy, to complement conventional medical intervention, lifestyle changes, and to provide further support and pain relief for your dog.

We strongly believe a multi modal approach works best including weight management, lifestyle and environmental adaptations, an appropriate exercise routine, and complementary therapies.

If you have a Labrador and you are struggling with any underlying musculoskeletal issues, please get in touch with us today to find out how we can support your dog! 🥰

New girl in the club - Pia!

This beautiful standard poodle has come to see us for regular massage therapy & hydrotherapy. She has surprised us all with how well she has tolerated swimming as she is one to usually avoid puddles! 😆 We will be working slowly and gently to build up her confidence in the pool, increase muscle mass and reduce any muscular tension. We can’t wait to see how she progresses! 🥰

Following our post about our NEW underwater treadmill coming in April, here are some features of our treadmill and how they may benefit your dog…
❤️ Incline and decline - we can use these to target specific muscle groups, build muscle mass and also for conditioning sporting and working dogs to increase the intensity of treatment
❤️ Adjustable water height - recent research shows us that different water heights can enhance range of motion in specific joints we are targeting. Following initial assessment, we can use this feature to create targeted treatment in the treadmill
❤️ Adjustable speed - we are able to adjust this depending on how your dog moves and based on what gait we want to achieve
❤️ Heated to 30 degrees - to have therapeutic benefit and aid in relieving pain
❤️ Ramps at both ends, making it suitable for dogs with any weaknesses or limited mobility

We are so excited to be able to offer this treatment! If you would like more information please drop a comment below or send us a DM 💕

Free cuddles included in every massage therapy session 😉
Massage therapy might be a great option if your dog is not able to swim in the pool (if they have advanced heart disease, or another underlying condition which means the pool isn’t suitable for them!). After a full assessment of your dog, we will use a range of manual techniques to focus on their muscular and joint health - reducing tension, alleviating discomfort, and improving their overall mobility. Owners are often surprised as just how much benefit 1 massage can have! 🥰

Muna - the most adorable little Iggy 🥰 this sweetheart hasn’t always found hydrotherapy the easiest - it took her a while to find her swimming legs!

She’s built so much confidence over the 7 months she’s been coming to see us and she’s able to maintain a lovely swimming posture now! We have found what works for her, as she prefers diagonal lengths over laps, and enjoys massage in her rest breaks. The cuddles in rest breaks are always her favourite part 🥺🩷

Why hydrotherapy may be a great addition into your arthritic dog’s management plan…
🐾 Non-weight bearing exercise - your dog can exercise without pressure through their arthritic joints. We may often see arthritic dogs struggle with weight gain as they find regular walking uncomfortable, so this is a fantastic way to keep them in shape while also encouraging full joint range of motion
🐾 Pain relief - the warm temperature of the pool will have therapeutic benefit, helping to reduce any pain
🐾 Massage therapy in rest breaks - this will enhance the benefits of treatment, targeting any muscular tension to increase mobility and comfort
The aim of treatment is always to improve quality of life and maintain comfort levels for your dog 🥰

If you have an arthritic dog, get in touch with us today to see how we can help!

Let’s talk safety in the pool!

Hydrotherapy and fun swims should be fun and a positive experience for your dog, but most importantly it should be carried out safely!
These are the most important things we recommend when looking for a hydrotherapy centre or pool for your dog to swim in….
🐾 Qualifications and insurance - make sure that the person carrying out treatment is appropriately qualified! Here at RA Canine Therapist, we have an in-depth knowledge in anatomy and physiology. With this, we are able to identify any changes or abnormalities in your dogs and will always work closely alongside your vet! We are also fully insured and canine first aid trained 💕
🐾 Suitable equipment - a buoyancy jacket or swimming harness should be worn at all times! Some dogs may require the extra support from a float coat and more confident swimmers may only need a harness. Both have handles on them so should we ever need to, we can hold your dog or provide them with extra support
🐾 ❌ No free swimming! We don’t allow even the most confident dogs to free swim at RA Canine Therapist! We aren’t trying to limit your dog’s fun, but as you are paying for treatment with us, we want to provide you with the gold standard and use our skills as we therapists to support your dog and enhance the benefits of their session by applying manual techniques throughout!
🐾❌ No more than 1 dog in the pool at a time - we want to provide your dog with 1-2-1 treatment, with our full focus! It’s extremely unsafe having multiple dogs swimming at the same time, especially with toys around which may lead to issues between dogs in the pool!

We are passionate about providing high quality and safe treatment for your lovely dogs. The dogs we see have lots of fun in the pool but in a controlled environment, limiting the risk of injury and accidents happening 💕

Erin 🩷

Hearing that Erin has been able to return to gun dog training after having regular hydrotherapy makes us so happy!

Erin came to see us following an injury to her cruciate ligament which required surgery. She had to pause doing what she loved during rehabilitation, but she has now been able to return to training! 😍

These are the kind of results we love seeing - it’s so rewarding and so amazing to be able to help dogs get back into doing what they love!

New member of the RA Canine Therapist fun & fitness swim club - Coco! 💕

We treat Coco’s lovely sister Kiki, and Coco has come to see us to help with some weight loss, as well as maintain her joint health! She was a little unsure at first, so we took her first session slow and steady, and she showed us how fantastic her swimming is! 🥰

We can’t wait to see you soon Coco! 🩷
