Anthelmintic resistance in horses.

Anthelmintic resistance to equine parasites is rapidly becoming a major problem in horses all over the world. We are facing the distinct possibility that we may soon see resistance to all our current anthelmintics. There are no new ones are on the horizon.

We would urge all our clients and friends to click onto and read the following link. https://canterforhorses.org.uk/

To summarise its advice.

Treatment of Peri-occular sarcoids by LASER surgery.

We recently treated a very interesting case of peri-ocular sarcoids in a pregnant mare. We were very reluctant to treat this type of lesion with a topical cream, due to the risk that the horse might subsequently rub the wound and get the cream into its eye. Similarly we were extremely reluctant to give a pregnant mare a GA.

Foutunately, she had a super temperament and were were able to surgically remove it under standing sedation and local anaesthetic. The wound is left open but usually heals very quickly and uneventfully.

If you have a horse with a similar lesion, please feel free to discuss it with us at The Acorns Equine Clinic.

Peri-occular sarcoid removal with LASERs.

We very recently treated an interesting case of a pregnant mare with peri-ocular sarcoids. These lesions are not very amenable to topical treatments (creams etc) as there is always the risk that she could rub the lesion subsequently and get the cream onto her eye. We were very reluctant to give her a GA. However, she has a super temperament and we were able to remove the sarcoids, under standing sedation and local anaesthesia.

You can see that with this technique, there is little or no bleeding and the wounds usually heal very quickly and uneventfully.

If you have a horse with similar lesions, please feel free to call us on

Confirmed cases of Equine Flu in the UK.

We have recently received reports of outbreaks of Equine Flu in Kent, North Yorkshire and in Staffordshire.

This disease is spread by infected droplets either by direct contact (horses sharing the same enclosed space (eg. lorry /barn etc), by indirect contact, (eg. an infected horse coughing over someone's coat and the next horse nuzzling them), or on the wind, (there have been reports of it travelling several miles!).

We advise all horse owners to be extra careful with their biosecurity. Keep your horses separate (especially at shows), do not share tack /a lorry with other horses. Check that your flu vaccination are all up to date. We know from previous outbreaks that immunity following vaccination drops very significantly after six months. We recommend vaccinating all horses every six months against Equine Flu.

If you require any further information, please call our helpful and friendly staff at The Acorns Equine Clinic on 01245 231152.

Clinical update:

Some of you may remember that last April we posted about an elderly cob who had a severe case of laminitis and needed a dorsal wall resection. Many people asked us how he got on. His owner has very kindly allowed us to share the following.

Conor said that 'at times like this, he feels that he has the best job in the world'. We wish his both him and his lovely owner all the best for the future.

PS. At least 'Lucero' (see below), can safely put his head above the parapet during this time.

Equine anthelmintic resistance research- we want to hear from equine keepers!

I am a PhD student at Harper Adams University and my project [Project VM0557] is supported by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. I am leading a study to explore UK equine keepers' attitudes, beliefs and behaviours surrounding helminth control and anthelmintic resistance.

Taking part involves a questionnaire of approx. 10-15 minutes. I'd be really grateful if you could share the questionnaire amongst clients and colleagues. Anthelmintic resistance poses risk to equine health and welfare, this research will help us to understand the problem more effectively.

At The Acorns Equine Clinic, we normally get to see newborn foals the morning after they were born, when we check them over etc. We are only very rarely asked to deliver them. The whole process is usually so quick that if there is a problem the vet is rarely able to attend before the placenta separates and the foal dies. Today was just one of those 'Lucky Days'.

This little lady started to foal this afternoon, her owner 'just had a gut feeling that all was not well' she rang and asked Conor to attend 'just in case'. This was an extremely good call as the foal was stuck by his shoulders. The mare sensibly had just stopped pushing until Conor could attend, reposition him and deliver him safely.

Her delighted owner allowed us to share this photo and the short video of the foal taking his very first steps into the 'big bad world'. Enjoy!

What is it that they say about buses?

The storks have been extremely busy over Essex recently, delivering a huge bouncing 'baby' girl just last night. Both she and her mother are doing very well. Enjoy!
