Here’s Penny’s top tips for preparing your dog for Fireworks 💥 night!

Whilst fireworks are fun for us, they can cause stress, anxiety and even aggression in some dogs…

Penny’s tips can help:
🐶 Walk dogs early, keep them on the lead (in case of any surprise fireworks bangs)
🐶 Close all windows, doors, and curtains to keep sound to a minimum
🐶 Turn the volumn on your TV or radio up to help block out some of the background noise
🐶 Prepare a safe area or a hiding place for your dog where they can feel safe and comfortable. This could be under a bed with some of your old clothes, let them go wherever they feel safest
🐶 Remember act normally, stay calm and praise your dog for their calm behaviour. If they want to hide let them do so, but you can stroke and cuddle your dog if this helps them stay calm
🐶 Stay at home and avoid leaving your dog/s alone for fireworks

Thank you for visiting ‘It's A Dog's Life’. I’m Penny, a dog behaviour specialist, and like many of us, have been around dogs all my life and simply couldn't envisage life without them. When I began dog training in the Eighties, it was a world of harsh training methods, choke chains and Barbara Woodhouse ruled the roost. Thankfully today good dog trainers and behaviourists (including me!) use modern, kind methods, based on positive reinforcement not punishment. Resulting in a fantastic relationship with your best friend based on trust and mutual respect; not fear.

Since the emergence of the Omicron variant, in order to keep all my clients and indeed myself safe, I would like to reassure everyone that I am taking a Lateral Flow Test every morning. This pair of rescue Pomeranians have only been with their new family for a week or so. Tatty on the left and Bolly on the right, are supposedly brother and sister but it's unlikely. They have complicated behaviour issues but we got off to a good start and I can't wait to see them again!

A puppy's critical socialisation period is the first 12 weeks of their life. They need to be introduced to adult dogs asap so they learn that they cannot play with adults in the same way as they did with their litter mates. Look how gently the black lab puts the puppy in his place. And yes puppies can mix with adults before their second vaccination as you can ask family, friends, neighbours etc whose dog's will of course be vaccinated
