An alternate to acupuncture when perhaps the horse doesn’t fully accept this method. The equine anatomy contains seven master trigger points: 1) The Pecs 2)  The Withers 3) The Spine
4) The Hips 5) The Hamstrings 6) The Lower Neck 7) The Poll

Starting with the pecs will stimulate a release of endorphins into the ANS (Autonomic Nervous System), providing comforting and relaxing associations between the horse and the therapist.

The Pecs
A vital starting point to release endorphins helping the horse to feel comfortable and unthreatened. These points are key to releasing tension, improving not only the direct area but benefiting the neck, shoulders and legs too.

The Withers
Often affected by saddle fitting issues resulting in pain and discomfort in the lower neck, shoulders and girth line.

The Spine
A great indicator to establish the best method of treatment. Understanding the reaction to palpating the muscles along each side of the spine will provide vital information to identify the cause/s of the concern/s.

The Hips
Here we’re looking to establish the level of tension in the muscles and tendons by assessing the underside of the hip bone.

The Hamstrings
There are two muscles to examine and palpate along the hamstrings, running between the top of the back of the legs to the hock.

The Lower Neck
At the lower neck we need to work on the area between the base of the neck, along the neck muscle and the shoulder line.

The Poll
It’s important to identify the nuchal ligament behind the skull, in line with the bridle strap and focus treatment on this part of the poll.

Effective trigger point musculoskeletal treatment is not about applying immense force, it is about accuracy. When working correctly on each trigger point, minimal pressure is required to cause an effective reaction.

Pressure will be applied using various methods, including applying fingers and thumbs to the trigger points or the heel of the hand.
The length of time pressure should be applied to each trigger point can vary dramatically – from a few seconds to a few minutes. Until the trigger point releases, pressure should remain.

🔹 Client Testimonial 🔹

I have used Ceci to treat my horses for many years now, in particular she treats my dressage horse regularly to keep him on top form. I compete and train often so making sure Diesel is supple and any muscle tension is released is our main priority. Acupuncture is a huge part of his treatments, I notice a massive difference in his suppleness and way of going after Ceci has seen him. I manage him in between sessions using a massage gun and laser machine that Ceci also uses in her sessions.

I would love to hear reviews from all clients past and present with your experience from treatments. Whether you are a regular client or a one off treatment, please leave a review either below on Instagram or if on Facebook on the views section would be amazing! ☺️ use to gather posts to one section so I can see them all!

A little information about me if you already didn’t know! 🧠

I qualified as a vet at The Royal Veterinary College in London in 1995 and since then I have enjoyed an active career in equine medicine, serving clients across East Anglia.

In 2003 I chose to expand my equine treatment portfolio by studying traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture as well as western techniques/trigger point acupuncture. The musculoskeletal and the biomechanics of equine movement have always fascinated me, which made studying chiropractic a natural progression for my equine skills.

Then I qualified with the International Academy for Veterinary Chiropractic in 2016 which then combined into my veterinary work working alongside one another.

Now solely focusing on Chiropractic, I use all my knowledge from working in both industries united in the one whilst treating your horses.

When the opportunity arises I like to and have travelled over to Germany on numerous occasions for work trips to broaden my knowledge with any new techniques or information. There is always something to learn especially working within an industry like this but also in a world which is constantly evolving.

Being a horse owner myself, I can relate to each client wanting to provide and achieve the best to our equine friends ☺️

Meet Spinal health’s supported rider Tate Purcell & her two mares who she competes dressage on.

Tinkerbell (dark bay) whose a big girl is 8years old, currently working towards advanced/psg. Having treated Tinks for coming up to 4years after doing a number on herself in the field, she soon become a regular client after her first initial consultation.

Fifi (liver chestnut) is only 4years old, who I went along to view with Tate as a rising 2year old. She’s has been competing in the young horse classes this year receiving promising marks to hopefully be a promising contender for career in the sport.

Both horses receive frequent treatments to make sure muscular/skeletal health and general well being is at the most optimal level. Prevention in any situation is always better than cure, regular treatments help minimise and sometimes iron out any potential areas causing longer lasting problems 👍🏻

When examining each individual horse, I look to identify joints with a reduced range of motion. Many people are familiar with the concept of the bone being out of place and it is very common for people to have heard of specific joints being out. However, that terminology gives an inaccurate picture of what is actually occurring. As opposed to the joint actually being out of place, the joint is instead restricted in its normal range of motion. These restricted joints are corrected with a chiropractic adjustment. The goal of any adjustment is to restore the optimal range of motion to that joint, which will subsequently alleviate inflammation in and pressure on surrounding nerves and soft tissue. The inflammation, similar to static on a phone line for example-makes it difficult for nerves to transmit their messages accurately. Nerves are coupled with the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) and control everything in the body, improving their ability to communicate well enhances overall health. Another reason why chiropractic practise is a very important part in the well being of equines to ensure smooth co-ordinated joint movements from the spinal segments to optimise neuromuscular function for longevity 🐎

The importance of the relationship between Fascia, Muscle and Bone
_____________________________________________________________
• The fascia has in recent years received more attention and a better understanding of its importance as a functional component of the body. The importance of a healthy fascia in correct biodynamic movement is essential.
• Fascia is made up of multicellular three-dimensional layer of connective tissue.
• Fascia contains not just collagen but also contracting cells of many types as well as sensory receptors
• Fascia not only provides structural and functional support to muscles and bones it also serves as a sensory organ when it comes to movement and performance adjustment, body awareness and control.
• Our bones depend on the muscles to move and maintain structural integrity and posture. Muscles rely on fascia to be able to work correctly. Muscle and fascia rely on bones to be able to contract and relax.
• Hence all 3 components should be examined and corrected when it comes to musculoskeletal treatments not just one component or the other.
• It is equally important to discuss findings with the owner and/or rider in order to find out why there may be anomalies with the and together be able to discuss best way forward for both horse and rider.

💭 Majority of the horses which I see have some soreness over their lumbar/sacral area. The thoraco-lumbar the lumbo-sacral junction play an important role in the transfer of power from the hind quarters.

Acupuncture is one of the techniques used to help relieve some tension/help relax muscles. Increased tension in this after could be from increase in work load from what the horse is used to for an example.

🐎 Ridden assessments can also be used as an important part within an evaluation of your horse. This can help see how the horse works under saddle with the rider on board aswell as off the horse evaluation during your treatment.

What is the Fascia System? 🧠

The fascia system is essentially a network of connective tissue, mainly formed from collagen fibres, throughout the entire body. It has three-dimensional structure that plays many anatomical and neurological roles within the body. It assists with balance, stability, functionality and movement, and connects with the central nervous system.

How can Myofascial Release benefit my horse?

One of the most valuable things you can do for your horse's fascial health is to schedule regular bodywork sessions. This can influence fascia in profound ways and keep your horse pain free and in the correct biomechanical way

The facia can be impacted by many factors to list a few; trauma, overuse, inflammation or poor saddle fitting. Tight muscles do have a domino affect on the facia causing it to tighten when the muscles are, losing its pliability.
