On Sunday Hilary and Caroline made the trip to Cheltenham Racecourse to receive awards on behalf of Lordships Stud for the breeding of Lordships Graffalo.

British Eventing Official awarded the 'Wide Awake Trophy' for the British bred, owned and ridden horse gaining the highest number of points. and The British Horse Foundation awarded Β£1000 to the breeder of the highest placed British bred horse at Badminton.

It was a lovely afternoon organised by the EHOA - The Event Horse Owners Association where we were excited to see friends and clients again with Annie Makin also receiving an award for Pencos Crown Jewel. We also caught up with Pennie Wallace who loaned us the fantastic Cornish Queen to breed Lordships Graffalo.

Hands (or hooves) up if your name is Walter and you've had the absolute best day! 🐴

Pathfinders Ros Canter Eventing and Lordships Graffalo (Walter) flew round Giuseppe Della Chiesa’s cross-country track this morning, making the whole affair look like a lot of fun. They crossed the line seven seconds inside the optimum time to stay on their dressage score of 26.3, with plenty of useful information to pass back to the rest of the team 🀩

That superb round has moved them up to eighth at the end of cross-country πŸ’ͺ

Long post warning!

We apologise for the lack of posts on this page recently but it has been a busy period ensuring all of our liveries have moved onto their new homes and seeing off some staff as well as they head for pastures new.

The Lordships Stud team would like to thank all of our owners, staff, students and suppliers, past and present, for their amazing support on the journey the stud has taken. Without you all the stud would never have been what it is and was.

This page will remain alive in order for any of those with Lordships bred horses, or our clients horses over the years to continue to share any updates - we look forward to hearing how they get on in the future. As the stud itself has closed for anyone who wants to remain updated with the remaining 'stud' horses (the youngstock, stallions and teasers) please move over to the Writtle University College Equine Training and Development Centre page which will be the social media site for the whole site.

Finally, a brief update on some of the horses who have left us over the last 8 weeks.

Livery mares and foals Gucci and Dolce, Ginny and Hans, Lilly and Duke, Bunny and Erik, Sky and Porridge have all moved to new yards. The owners have all updated us that they have settled in well.

Livery youngstock Aquila, Gambit, Gina, Teddy and Georgie have all moved to new yards, Gina has found a new owner in the process and full brothers Georgie and Teddy have moved together and we got to see a lovely video when Teddy joined Georgie in their new home and they were reunited following the journey.

Beautiful loan mare Viera has returned to her owner and our own Maddie is currently an ET recipient mare for a local breeder. Maddie leaving has been one of the hardest parts for the staff who have been here for years with her. her new home have welcomed us to visit and once the teaching staff have returned from the summer we will be making the trip to see her, especially for those who did not get to say goodbye.

World Horse Welfare Max returned to Hall farm (as was always the plan for him) as a ridden horse. Thank you to student Victoria who did a wonderful job getting him hacking out in company and cantering in the school under saddle before he left.

Still on site are the two stallions Greenholme Tony (Tony) and Cosford Vesuvius (Julian) who will continue to be utilised for student practical sessions in both husbandry and within the stud based modules. They are also enjoying the quieter yard meaning they get to take over the nursery paddocks for a while!) The boys are ably assisted by the two teaser mares Boe and Tilucienne who have also remained on site. Additionally we have a small group of youngstock that have remained: homebreds Tula and Gadget along with Redwings Ora, World Horse Welfare Finley and World Horse Welfare Halle.

So, a final thank you to all of our supporters and clients, there are too many to mention but special thanks go to Pennie, who has been a part of the stud for longer than most; Annie who has been our longest standing client and has welcomed all of the students into her horses lives over the years. And of course to all of the stud staff who have been a part of Lordships Stud over the years.

Thank you to Pennie Wallace for her kind words below (I had to copy the text as it would not let me share the whole).

We are extremely proud to win a breeders award for Lordships Graffalo, it is especially exciting as this is just the beginning of his career. We could not have achieved this without the strong support of so many staff and industry members as well as the superb students we have had on the unit throughout the years. The students are what make it all possible and who constantly challenge us to achieve bigger and better things and to work harder, so thank you all!

As Pennie has said below, we love to hear about your successes, your memories and what you got up to at the stud so please feel free to comment.

From Pennies post:

Thank you Boots and Hooves Photography for these AMAZING photos of Lordships Graffalo coming 2nd at Badminton Horse Trials this weekend!

This was his first attempt at 5 star, he was the youngest horse in the field at 10 years old and was the ONLY horse to finish on his dressage score!

Apart from his 2nd place he was also awarded the Frank Weldon trophy for the youngest horse, the Sport Horse Breeding (GB) trophy for the highest placed horse sired by an SHBGB stallion - Grafenstolz owned by The Stallion Company - and also The British Horse Foundation prize for the breeder of the highest placed British Bred horse.

What an incredible horse to achieve all this at his very first five star!
Huge congratulations to Ros Canter Eventing and all her team!
We are all so proud and excited to see what the future holds for this super talented partnership!

For all the Writtle University College students out there please let us know your memories of Walter or Hermes as he was known then and send us any photos you might have of him.

Writtle students over the years have been so fortunate to spend time learning and getting to know all the wonderful horses at Lordships Stud at Writtle University College πŸ΄πŸ’•
Please share your experiences with others about this totally unique facility

So excited to announce the brilliant 2nd place at Badminton Horse Trials of Ros Canter and the British Breeding Futurity Graduate, Lordships Graffalo.
Bred out of an exceptional damline of top event mares descending from the super Badminton and Burghley mare, Cornish Faer who was bred by the Olympian Bridget Parker and ridden by her daughter Katie.
By Grafenstolz who is currently 3rd in the WBFSH Eventing Sires rankings
and bred by the Lordships Stud of Writtle College in Essex out of the mare, Cornish Queen owned by Pennie Wallace of Pencos Sport Horses.
Lordships Graffalo scored 8.25 and 8.50 as a foal and 2yold respectively at the Futurity evaluations showing a potential to become a top class event horse. Well he has done that with great class at the young age of only 10yrs.
A great British result from breeder to rider.

Following the amazing result at Badminton Horse Trials yesterday we thought we would share a few 'baby photos' of Walter or 'Hermes' as he was known when he was with us (Greek Gods and Godesses theme that year!).

For any past students who were with us during this period - we would love to see any of your photos of Lordships Graffalo - please add them in the comments below.

It is genuinely something amazing to have bred a horse that has performed so well at the top of the sport and we are very proud, potentially even more-so as first and foremost we are a University. Our efforts go into providing the best learning experience for our students, and Lordships Graffalo has come from a huge family of students who can all say they played a part in his early years at Writtle University College.

However, it would not have happened at all without Pennie Wallace who loaned us the superb 'Cornish Queen', a mare that has produced an outstanding legacy of event horses. Pennie has been a huge supporter of Lordships Stud both during her time working at Writtle and still today. The contacts and network that Pennie helped us forge led to the use of the The Stallion Company stallions and the use of Grafenstolz for this breeding. Another thank you goes to Amy Mills another previous staff member who was a fundamental part of breeding decisions at this time.

Even with the pedigree and talent to go to the top, Walter would not have made it without Pennie finding him the best owners and rider, Ros Canter Eventing, to further his training and subsequent career.

So, from a small stud, as part of a specialist University, the stud team say thank you to Pennie, Ros, Michelle and Walter for making it possible that one of our homebred horses made it to Badminton and smashed it. We cant wait to see what the future holds - some truly great things we hope.
