Our dental offer is still running throughout February! £250 for a general anaesthetic, scale and polish.

This lovely little dog was in with us this week and you can see from the photo this is extensive dental disease. The second picture is of the teeth once we have cleaned them with the ultrasonic scaler. This allows us to get up under the gum line to remove the built up calculus. I’m sure this little lady is feeling much better now her teeth are clean!

If you haven’t been to us before, that’s no problem! We are accepting new clients! Just call us to book in a pre-op check!

Brushing your pet's teeth.

Roland's dog, Beryl, has had plenty of time to build up to this point but this video highlights the importance of brushing both sides of the teeth.

They key with brushing your pet's teeth is to introduce it slowly and be led by them. Start by getting them used to having their mouths handled by applying dome dog-friendly toothpaste to your finger and then sliding your finger under their lip to rub along the gumline. Do this every day until they are comfortable with it.

After that point you can then introduce a toothbrush or finger brush. Start at the back teeth and do little circular motions with the brush on each tooth on the cheek side. Stop when you get to the canine tooth. Then do the same on the other side top and bottom. Finish up with the canines and incisors.

Once your pet is comfortable with this, you can then start brushing the inside of the teeth (tongue side).

Top tips:
Brush your pet's teeth at their quietest time of day, when they are most relaxed.
Use treats during the process to keep them rewarded and distracted.
Take regular breaks if they are fidgeting lots or seeming stressed.
Brush their teeth when they are due a meal and feed them straight afterward to add positive reinforcement.

Pet Dental Month!

Do you brush your pet's teeth??

It might seem like a strange question, but plaque can build up on our pet's teeth just like it does on our own teeth. Plaque then hardens into tartar which can lead to bad breath, periodontal disease, difficulty or pain when eating and bleeding gums.

We recommend brushing your pet's teeth daily. Having your teeth brushed is a strange experience, and many pets will panic if it is not introduced slowly and gently. It may take a month or two to reach a point of “proper brushing” – this is normal and nothing to worry about. If you have any questions or need any support, please call to make an appointment with one of the nurses.

Urinary stones:

Urinary stones can form because of incorrect pH levels in the bladder.

The images below show an image of a cats bladder with a urinary stone measuring 0.23cm. This little stone was irritating the bladder and causing pain and bleeding. If enough urinary stones form they can block the urethra completely leading to an urgent situation where the cat can’t pass urine at all.

One of the ways we can treat urinary stones is with a specially formulated urinary diet. Urinary diets help to redress the pH balance, thereby dissolving the stones and preventing them reforming.

The second image shows the same bladder stone after a couple of weeks on the urinary diet. Amazingly the stone is now measuring 0.1cm and will soon be gone completely!
