Urinary stones:

Urinary stones can form because of incorrect pH levels in the bladder.

The images below show an image of a cats bladder with a urinary stone measuring 0.23cm. This little stone was irritating the bladder and causing pain and bleeding. If enough urinary stones form they can block the urethra completely leading to an urgent situation where the cat can’t pass urine at all.

One of the ways we can treat urinary stones is with a specially formulated urinary diet. Urinary diets help to redress the pH balance, thereby dissolving the stones and preventing them reforming.

The second image shows the same bladder stone after a couple of weeks on the urinary diet. Amazingly the stone is now measuring 0.1cm and will soon be gone completely!

Christmas season is in full swing and we’ve had 2 chocolate toxicity patients this week.

It’s the time of year when we often have more lovely treats around the house for us, but which are sadly toxic to our pets.

Theobromine is the ingredient in chocolate which causes all the problems. Dark chocolate has a higher concentration of theobromine so is very serious, but enough milk chocolate can also cause significant problems.

We do have a formula that allows us to ascertain whether a pet has ingested enough chocolate to reach toxic levels but if you know your pet has eaten chocolate the best thing to do is bring them straight to us and we can give them a medicine that makes them sick. If it’s been more than a few hours after eating chocolate we sometimes also send pets home with activated charcoal to prevent further absorption of toxins across the gut lining.

So keep those chocolate treats up high and out of the way and if you are concerned your pet has consumed chocolate give us a call as soon as you can!

Here’s Lily looking a bit sad after having to vomit up a galaxy bar!
