If the worst should happen, could you afford emergency medical care for your pet? That is where pet insurance comes in.

Often, pet owners debate between putting money by each month for their pet or investing in a health insurance policy. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal circumstances. Insurance not only covers you if the worst should happen and you have a large financial outlay, but it can also cover ongoing rehabilitation and treatment of a long-term condition if your pet is diagnosed. All policies differ but you can tailor them to your unique circumstances. If this is something you could afford, bearing in mind, that costs can run well into the thousands, you may feel it’s not necessary. However, for the majority of pet owners, insurance is a must!

We recommend insurance so that there is never a compromise on the care that can be provided to pets.

The benefits speak for themselves.

Many cats appear happy and content outside in the cold. Even with their thick winter coats, however, cats feel the cold just like we do.

They are warm-blooded, so they, too, prefer the heat even if they do have some adaptations to protect themselves from the cold!

So how cold is too cold?

🐈Cats are very good at making that decision for themselves. When they feel the chill, they will seek warmer locations so ensure they have access to warmth and shelter at all times.

🐈Vulnerable cats will have a lower tolerance and require additional protection i.e. the young, elderly or if they are poorly. Limit their exposure outside and ensure they have a cosy spot indoors!

🐈Certain breeds have little to no hair so they most certainly will not be able to cope in certain weather conditions and will should stay indoors.

🐈If your cat is feeling cold, they will likely curl up in a ball and seek a cosy spot such as one with plenty of blankets or near a heat source. If your cat has been outside in cold weather, be mindful of the signs of hypothermia (check out our latest post!).

We will be fully embracing National Walk Your Dog Month to get a spring back in our step.

As well as quality time with our four-legged friends (which they will be longing for after having us all around over the holidays!), it’s great for our health, too. Say goodbye to the January blues and if you have been out embracing the winter stomping, share your photos with us. We always love to see them!

In very cold temperatures, pets are at risk of frostbite which can cause tissue damage and is often the precursor to hypothermia.

Pets who spend extended periods outside in cold weather or who become wet and are unable to dry off due to the weather are most commonly at risk.

When their body temperature drops seriously low, blood is directed from their extremities (such as nose, ears, tail and paw pads) to the vital organs for protection. It can cause tissue damage to the affected areas and be very dangerous.

Pets will be at higher risk if they are:

🐾Very old or very young
🐾Thin coated
🐾A small breed/cat
🐾Have a chronic illness

In the very cold temperatures if you spot any of these signs, contact us/your vet immediately:

❄️Skin that first appears pale or bluish-white, and later becomes red and puffy
❄️Red or pale skin on the extremities
❄️Skin that appears shrivelled
❄️Skin that stays cold to the touch
❄️Signs of pain when touched
❄️Ice crystals in or around the nose

We hope these faces speak for themselves!❤️

We want all pets to enjoy visiting us this much. We help support pet owners throughout their whole journey together. So if you have recently welcomed a puppy or maybe even rescued an older pet, our puppy parties, youth clubs and fear-free clinics take the ‘pet’ out of ‘petrified!

All our clinics practice ‘fear-free’ principles and these clinics aim to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety and stress through positive reinforcement.

So, if you have a particularly nervous visitor to our clinic or it’s their first time, be sure to mention it so that we can ensure that your truly nervous pets are given all the care and attention they need, at no extra cost!

Look familiar?

If your pet has started to show some ‘out of character’ behaviour, they could have separation anxiety.

As the winter holidays have drawn to a
close and we find ourselves going back to work/school, our pets can find this distressing, having become accustomed to their humans being around them for longer periods. This is especially true for younger pets who are still learning their routine.

To make this transition easier for them, consider the following:

> Create positive associations with you leaving, such as leaving their favourite toy and/or giving them treats
> Ensure they have had exercise and are therefore more inclined to sleep
> Leave them a puzzle toy to keep their mind occupied
> Try to create independent time when you are around so it is not such a stressful experience.

If you need any advice, chat with our team or visit our clinic where we can advise on products that may help your pet with the transition.

❄️Hypothermia is when a pet's body temperature drops dangerously low.

Pets who are vulnerable in any way i.e. very old, very young, have a thin coat or are unwell, will be at higher risk and so should never be in a situation where they risk developing hypothermia as they can deteriorate more quickly.

If your pet is showing any of these signs they could be hypothermic:
> Shivering
> Appearing drowsy/lethargic
> Pale gums
> Becoming unconscious/collapsed, which can lead to coma
> Shallow breathing
> Cold extremities (paws, ears or tail)

In the above circumstances, call us/your vet straight away as time is of the essence. In the interim, here are some steps you can take to help your pet:
🐾If they are wet, dry them with a towel (no direct heat, such as from a hair dryer, as they need to be warmed slowly)
🐾Warm them with blankets under them and over them which will trap warm air
🐾Increase the environmental temperature around them such as heating the room they are in or placing them near a radiator
🐾Offer some warm (not hot) water to drink

Farewell to Amie ❤️

Sadly, Thursday 2nd Jan is Amie's last day with us as she leaves for a new challenge in her nursing career.

Amie started with us as an Animal Nursing Assistant at Royal Wootton Bassett, then trained as a student and once qualified, became Lead Anaesthetic RVN.

She has been a huge part of the team and we are all going to miss her as we know many of the clients will too (she has had quite a following, especially with rabbit and guinea pig owners!).

We wish her all the best and a wonderful future career in nursing - she is an asset to the profession 🐾

What a year we have had at Thameswood!💙

We have welcomed so many wonderful new paws through our doors and spent time caring for some incredible pets.

At Thameswood, your pets, much like ours, are family members. So many of our clients have sent us the most beautiful cards and thank you gifts, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Here are some of the many pets we have had the pleasure of looking after this year! We are excited to welcome many more in 2025…

As bonfire night is behind us, you are probably well-versed in how your pet responds to fireworks.

Unfortunately, those who have nervous pets are likely well aware that New Year celebrations are looming. Whilst at present, the fireworks happening around us are out of our control, there is still plenty we can do to make it bearable for our four-legged friends.

Here is a reminder of our top tips!

At this time of year, much like us, pets suffering from arthritis can find it even more difficult.

The cold weather can worsen arthritis symptoms, but as well as practical advice you can easily implement at home, we have a range of alternative therapies available which can provide relief.

🩺Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) & Stem Cell Therapy
Canine PRP and stem cell therapies offer a safe and natural method to delay the onset and progression of osteoarthritis and also relieve the pain of joint disease (or injury), by using your dog’s own blood.

🩺K-Laser Therapy
Laser treatment can be used both to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis. It often allows the reduced use of long-term anti-inflammatory drugs (as advised by your vet).

🩺Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a non-invasive therapy which is commonly used for the management of conditions such as arthritis. Physiotherapy, in particular, works well alongside other therapies, such as those above, and is usually carried out at the clinic by our Physio, Chloe.
