An earlier walk today for the cooler weather!
When you injure your paw while Mum's car is at the garage but still need to get to the vets!
Does this count as do nothing training? π€£
The Friday afternoon gang went on a lovely adventure today around Barber Woods filled with fun, enrichment, basic training, cuddles, ear scratches, fetch and exploring π₯°
We definitely had wet and muddy paws after our walk today π₯°
Its been a while.... now home educating my kids as well as raising a puppy and setting up my own business!
This sleepy girl isnt so little anymore (well compared to other labs she is π€£ she is still only 15kg).... we hit the 6 month mark and boy did we hit teenager stage! I have to admit, it was a little disheartening after all the hard work we had put into training. I slowed things right down and have slowly been going back to basics with our and still find opportunities to work on our "do nothing"
I *think* there has been *some* improvement out and about but she still has an obsession with licking other dog's faces π€¦ββοΈ I dont think she is destined for official gundog world (mainly because she has me as an owner) but she is a wonderful family pet and I love her to bits.
She is quirky so fits into our family well π₯°

11 weeks after injuring my knee (torn meniscus), I have finally been able to get on the floor with this one.
Getting back up was interesting π€£
I cant work out how to link (or if its possible on instagram). This cheltenham (local to me) family need as much help as possible to get enough signatures by Thursday.

Moose and I may have taken a muddy walk in Lineover Woods today π€£π€£π€£ Apparantly the muddiest part was the perfect place for Moose to rest!
Also met a new furry client today... watch this space!
Half Term: Monday 27th May - Sunday 2nd June π
First delivery. Ember eats anything and everything so I am sure she will love it! π
Lovely to recieve such positive feedback after today's walk with Moose! He's a beautiful boy π₯°
I follow the principles of and with my clients as well.
I think that's Ember done for the day π€£

This one is a little off today... I am assuming its teething but I'm not entirely sure. When she isnt sleeping, she is quite restless, chewing everything she shouldnt, digging up the garden π whining and really struggled with patience/steadiness this morning.
Popped out to get her a and some pate for some enrichment instead of lunchtime training and brought her a new chew.
Now having snuggles on the sofa.
Lovely morning doing some admin in the sun (and peace - a rarity π), then Ember and I explored the countryside near us and did some basic training and do nothing patience training in a new environment.
Ember and the kids have a busier calendar than I do π€£

I love how Ember went to get her favourite pillow from the other sofa, went to get her duckie, snuggled down and fell asleep! π₯°
Proud of this one today π₯° - I took her with me on school pick up. Lots of people and dogs. It was far from perfect initially but by the end, she was more focused on me AND listening to commands when people or dogs were interacting with her.
This is one of the reasons I decided to crate train - so that Ember has a safe cosy place she can go to if she is tired and/or wants to get away from the noise of the house.
Its lovely that she has started to go into her crate (or sometimes onto her mat) when she needs to.

Tips from the and community would be appreciated please π
Dont be fooled by the picture, it looks like she did a perfect job at "do nothing" π€£. This probably made up 20% of lunch. The other 80%, she kept going to see a person on the next table or attempting to get to a couple of beautiful golden retrievers.
I met my friend .fleming for lunch today and we visited - a lovely little stationery shop which is also dog friendly! π
Ember is stil very excitable when I take her out. Literally EVERY person, she will lunge at or jump up at. Dogs are worse as she tends to try and nip them. I have tried getting her to sit as they approach but she wont listen.
Today, there was a giant labrador behind us. I thought I would just keep walking but she must have lunged backwards ending up spinning herself around about 5 times choking herself in the process.
As Ben recommends with always training, I extend the training beyond the mealtimes (where she is brilliant).
Help?
We went over to a local retail park today to practise our "do nothing) (). Ember still gets very excited when we are out and about so this is something I want to focus on in the coming weeks.
It took her quite a while to settle in the car but she got there and then after a toilet break, we did some more "do nothing" (or at least, tried to)
We then went into where Ember picked out a new toy. I wish I had taken a picture as it was so funny watching her walk around the shop with her new toy all proud of herself π
I wanted to update her bed as she is starting to outgrow her other one. She jumped straight into this one and even took her new toy with her π€£
Met this georgeous boy today and took him for a trial walk! He will be joining the Shadow's Heart family next week.
Moose is a strong and powerful english springer and I loved walking him. We did some recall practise, scentwork, chased some leaves and worked on patience/doing nothing.
I am not a dog trainer (can recommend some good ones) but like to provide dogs with mentally stimulating enrichment activities as well as the physical. This is important, especially for gundogs.
Ordered a few leaflets today! π

What I love most about #bgfoundations (@gundogapp @beggarbush ) are the results shown in this video. Ember is just having some fun (ie no commands) but is staying close to me and still checks in every so often. I am learning and dont get it right all the time, but following the BG principles since I brought her home at 13 weeks old has helped build a strong connection where she wants to be around me. Thank you @beggarbush - couldnt recommend you enough. #bgfoundations #gundogapp #gundogpuppy #petgundog #blacklabluppy #dogsofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram #labradorsofinstagram #rewardbasedtraining #connection
When things dont go quite right.... hit our first big hurdles I would say in our learning journey (more me than Ember!) 1) Ember has started to ignore the recall (to be fair to her, I normally tap my leg as well but I have the bowl in one hand and phone in the other) 2) I think I am confusing her with the stop whistle. In this video, she pre empts the whistle and then when I blow it, she goes to come back. The next time (not shown), she didnt pre empt, but ignored the stop whistle @gundogapp @beggarbush
Retrieving.... We are using her duck toy as she wont retieve a ball (she is a bit fussy with what she will pick up π€£). For a retriever she has seemed a bit hesitant with retrieving (probably made worse by me not currently being able to get on the floor with her) so I have been doing lots of encouragement and letting her just play and go straight out. @gundogapp @beggarbush #puppytraining #gundogpuppy #gundogadventures #blacklabrador #blacklabpuppy #bgfoundations #gundogapp #retriever #labradorsofinstagram #labrador #dogsofinstagram #puppy #puppyretrieving #labpuppy
Mud, Mud,Glorious Mud π€£ Quite literally muddy paws..... My parents came over with their almost 8 month old Cavapoo, Marlow. Marlow is a sensitive pup and found Ember's high energy a little scary. Interactions would mostly go like this... Marlow: I wanna play Ember: OK I'll play Marlow: I dont wanna play, I DONT wanna play Ember: too late, games already started π We have been working on Marlow being a bit more assertive and Ember being calmer (she still isnt great at listening to commands with such an exciting distraction - to be expected) Today they played really well together... in MUD!! π Even when Ember began to tire, instead of using it to run away, Marlow asked for more play! π₯° Also, its funny that Ember is just under 4 months and Marlow is just under 8 months π€£ #socialisation #labsofinstagram #cavapoo #blacklabrador #blacklabpuppy #gundogpuppy #playdate #muddypaws #dogsofinstagram
Ember and I have been working on "leave" and "place" today. She is right, I do need to practise using the whistle - especially recall - I cant seem to get it consistent! π I am sitting down for 2 reasons.. 1) I am still attempting to rest my knee before my trauma clinic appt on Thursday 2) It adds a distraction to Ember's sit. Prior to this, she would move every time I sat down. Such a clever girl for 3 months old - she is picking it up much quicker than I am π€£ @willowtimle_labradors Midnight Ember Food: @essentialfoodsofficial Training using @gundogapp @beggarbush #gundogapp #bgfoundations #blacklabpuppy #labrador #blacklabrador #dogsofinstagram #labradorsofinstagram #puppytraining #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #gundogpuppy #gundog #novicehandler
Here is our progress after 2 weeks at 14 weeks old. I am still feeding her 4 times a day and either split each meal into 4 or do more hand feeding from one bowl (especially now I have sprained my knee and I am attempting to reduce my walking). I will sometimes use a slow feeder or kong at some point to include some enrichment as well. Sit - I have started to step out of sight to increase duration and also mix up recalling her and walking back towards her. Recall - working on verbal and whistle. Her recall is excellent during training sessions but non existent outside of training sessions π I havent really worked on distractions yet (although kids sometimes act as natural distractions π€£). I am assuming this is the reason but any advice? Heel - its not perfect, she still jumps up occasionally and will either carry on walking and then sit or sometimes walks behind me to sit π€·ββοΈ but we are both on a learning journey and I am pleased with our progress. Back - she is great at back (not shown on video), its probably her strongest command at the moment Leave (not shown on video) - she still needs me to remove the bowl if she has been sent to the food but interestingly this is one command she is relatively good at outside of our training sessions. Place (not shown on video) - she is getting really good at this especially going into her crate when told to. Threshold Training - I need to get better at being more consistent although yesterday the door was open and she stopped and looked back at me. #gundogpuppy #gundogapp #bgfoundations #novicehandler #blacklabpuppy #dogsofinstagram #labradorsofinstagram #gundog #labrador #blacklabrador #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree
A bit of a mixed day today with @willowtimle_labradors EMBER MIDNIGHT This girl is so clever, 14 weeks, we havent had 2 weeks together yet and here she is recalling past food. π€© She was a little hesitant and decided to take a wide birth π€£ but she did it! I love @beggarbush and @gundogapp way of using mealtimes to train. Although, outside of meal times/our training sessions, she is still very much in "nah, I'm good" mode with all commands except sit. Recall is probably her least reliable. House training is non existent today. 6 wees in the house in the space of about 45 mins! #dogsofinstagram #blacklabpuppy #gundogapp #bgfoundations #novicehandler
We are a long way from perfect (and I need to find a better way of recording and training at the same time) but I am so pleased with our progress! This is only our 5th full day together. Ember is so intelligent and more than makes up for me being a complete novice in gundog training/handling. My @acme_whistles has just arrived so next step is to learn how to use it (its harder than everyone makes it look!) and incorporate into our training. I don't really know what I am doing but we are loving it. Just hope I am not teaching her any bad habits.
